Re the fader mod on that A80. It's a BBC mod and, judging by the meterbridge , was used in television, as radio ones never had such bridges - certainly not the ones I worked on in London Broadcasting House in the 1980s & 90s. If it has a timecode board/head it's a TV one. We rarely used them as an editing machine in radio - that was done on B67, A810, Revox PR99 and latterly A807 machines. In LBH the A80s were used in the basement studios and in the "Conns" (continuity suites) where programs where linked and played out. Each Conn would have three A80s - some basement studios had 3, others 4. The reason for the fader was that, in the studios, the machines connected to a "tape routing panel" that allowed various feeds to be switched to the machines and from the machines to the mixer. The panel could mix the machine outputs to a single stereo pair to ease the workload for the person driving the desk. The output of the individual machine (level and output) could be controlled by the studio tape operator. News studios used Telefunkem M15A machines as they were superior when it came to editing.

Very nice piece of equipment. You know your stuff when it comes to this stuff. This video is really interesting. You make it that way. Not boring at all. Keep up the good work.

Neat little lights, wouldn't it be easier to just look at the transport to see if it were playing/fast forwarding?
How many tape machines do you have and do you use them or are they just a "collection"?

I have really been enjoying your videos and I particularly loved this one, since the studio where I record has both an A-80 and a 2" 24-track A-800.
Towards the end of the video when you demonstrated the second machine that you had been servicing, you mentioned and demonstrated the vari-speed controls. If an A-80 doesn't have its vari-speed controls, is there a place to get the components or should you just look for another A-80 that has it?

The 3 inch reels looked so weird on it. I would love to have one of these, but will probably never find or afford one.

that´s "home recording tapes like gruding TK-47 and other like that" will work well for recording voice (singing), old style (elvis styles) with all the saturation of the tube time? all warm weight and harmonics that recordings used to had? to play,
i can see the videos of this, is excellent, but to record i don´t know if will had the same sound quality, or near that´s olders profissional studios recordings, i´ll use a pre amp mic behringer 220 tube, and a akg perception 120

The Studer A800 is not "the same machine with 16 or 24 channels"! It is in fact a completely different machine of a completely different technical generation.
    Nice video nevertheless.
