I haven't used a Tape splicer for years ... I'd like to to say "good memories" but to be honest, I'm so glad those days are, well gone - for me at least. Now the studio uses (32 track hardware recording) PCM multi track up to 192kHz and DSD to SSD, and of course DAW recording into the Mac from the desk - all seamless from hardware to software ... Though I'll admit Reel to Reel looks VERY cool especially pimped out machines 😂

Nice to see someone getting so excited about 1/4" tape these days. Somewhere in storage I have a large quantity of BASF 7" and 10" spools of Long Play and Double Play tape. Been wondering what to do with it for years.

Younger I was also working with Studer at a major radio station in Montreal for 27 years. I think what's still working today. I made the cuts of the tape, with a razor blade. You make me laugh so much when you get a new box, you breathe it, I do the same thing. I have nostalgia for the analog. thank you Doc

Recapping is one thing to get the refreshed renewed performance you are looking for out of any high end machine. Your ears will love it. That is a bombass machine. Studer A-80, is an explanation really necessary? Only if you don’t know reel to reel from jack! If your recording that from CD to reel, hope you have a really great CD transport and outboard D/A converter. I was thinking Meridian. Really nice stuff. Regardless, I like what I was hearing off that CD. I like that music anyway. Enjoy it guy because A80s are not too plentiful in pristine condition!😁🥰

I'd love to see the inversion comparison between tape and source, like you demonstrated for MP3 in the video you made about the inversion technique. It can be hard to tell what's really there and what's placebo, seeing you switch between the sources like that. So it'd be neat to see/hear the empirical difference between the two.

As a Studer A-80 owner: some of the tape guide bearings are noisy and, after you already used some Ampex stuff, you‘ll have to align the machine to the RTM tapes.
Nevertheless the A-80 sounds awesome anyway. Little advice: put a ppm meter ( RTW or ATP ) in the input chain to obtain the optimum record level for the machine. 😀

I used to repair and line-up these machines, including A800 2" tape machines. Sham you use the fixed blade to cut your tape and not an aluminium block stuck to the deck offering 45° and 90° edits with a free single-edged razor blade, pizazz personified Claudio. With your ears surely you can hear a 45° edit, there's a good example on the beginning/end of Pink Floyd's The Wall. BTW have you checked the safety mods for the A80? Some of the wires that supply the motors can be loose enough that they get chaffed by the exposed rotating part of the motor inside.

Perfect opportunity to invert the phase of one of the audio files, keep both tracks perfectly time aligned, bring up the fader gradually of one track while the other is playing. Then you can hear EXACTLY what the tape machine has done because all of the identical waveforms in each track will cancel each other out due to phase cancellation, leaving just the extra added enhancements created by the tape machine coming out of the monitors. The thing is, it's probably too subtle for people brought up on a diet of dubstep and trap :(

I'm surprised that those Rifa capacitors have lasted this long.... They are the worst thing in any electronic equipment, if you see them in any other electronic equipment have them replaced asap! Secondly.... Due to the age of that machine I would recommend getting all the electrolytic capacitors replaced also... Because when a capacitor dies it likes to take other components with it so basically any components in its path before or after usually become victims.... The reason why this is really important is that while you can replace capacitors and you should get performance restored to how it was when new, but unfortunately when a bad capacitor also takes out a transistor.... At this age it's vintage and finding a new modern transistor with the same characteristics is going to be really hard or impossible.... Apart from the tape itself, it's the electronics from that era that also contribute to the sound.... You would expect that the local electronic repair shop would know this already! But you'd be wrong.... Anyway great video once again....
