I haven't used a Tape splicer for years ... I'd like to to say "good memories" but to be honest, I'm so glad those days are, well gone - for me at least. Now the studio uses (32 track hardware recording) PCM multi track up to 192kHz and DSD to SSD, and of course DAW recording into the Mac from the desk - all seamless from hardware to software ... Though I'll admit Reel to Reel looks VERY cool especially pimped out machines 😂
Nice to see someone getting so excited about 1/4" tape these days. Somewhere in storage I have a large quantity of BASF 7" and 10" spools of Long Play and Double Play tape. Been wondering what to do with it for years.
Younger I was also working with Studer at a major radio station in Montreal for 27 years. I think what's still working today. I made the cuts of the tape, with a razor blade. You make me laugh so much when you get a new box, you breathe it, I do the same thing. I have nostalgia for the analog. thank you Doc
It drives me crazy that you didn't clean the machine before putting on the new reels .. 🤯 .. anyway great video as always .. love the analogue content. :)
Your voice is one of those you forget how much you love when its been a while, like with Matt Shultz, the lead singer of cage the elephant, I realize I love it after hearing it.
I enjoyed the video and congratulations on the updates-very cool. I am sorry to say, we both have a similar sense of humor😊-my poor wife. My first reel-to-reel of that size was a Sears Silvertone (early to mid-1960’s). It was no Studer but I had a lot of fun with it.
Aw yea! Gotta love tape! I'm privileged enough to own a Studer Revox A77. My band doesn't have a drummer at the moment so we pre-record the drum tracks to it and use it at gigs. Just a shame the cast frame weighs a ton.
I recently acquired an old Sony reel to reel. I’m actually super impressed with the sound quality! I also purchased the splicing tools. I think I’m gonna make a dj mix with this 👍👍
hi have a otari my self did not have the space for this model you are right it sounds ace my otari mtr takes 1/2 tape and at the time i came into 100 used once zonal tapes lost for words otari decks are about the same it's down to spare i can change over to 1/4 1/8 tapes 1/8 is play back and record from start to end as tape is thin i have to change rollers over as well when change size of the tape and tenson as well love the way you come over
This is awesome! As much as I love the new advantages brought by digital recording, there's just something about analog recording that makes it very special
You obvious you are a pretty stylish dude, and it stands to reason a couple of cool looking anodized reels were in your future. I put red and purple anodized reels on my NAGRA T audio with timecode. It is beautiful, and I feel your upgrade. Nice!
ATR also still make tape, but the point is still valid, if you want decent fresh tape there are not a lot of choices, you're probably purchasing from RTM or ATR
Recapping is one thing to get the refreshed renewed performance you are looking for out of any high end machine. Your ears will love it. That is a bombass machine. Studer A-80, is an explanation really necessary? Only if you don’t know reel to reel from jack! If your recording that from CD to reel, hope you have a really great CD transport and outboard D/A converter. I was thinking Meridian. Really nice stuff. Regardless, I like what I was hearing off that CD. I like that music anyway. Enjoy it guy because A80s are not too plentiful in pristine condition!😁🥰
Woow! Awesome video! Nice recorder and tapes! Only... I think it would have been nice to use command/control Solo button, instead of clicking Mute one by one, that way there would be no pause between switching tracks. But I love all you do anyways, so... keep it rolling! ;)
Wooow. I worked in radio station on the Philips with 6 heads, looks similar like N4450. There was 2pcs, we do various magic but my favorite magic is echo simulation in live program. The best one.
As a Studer A-80 owner: some of the tape guide bearings are noisy and, after you already used some Ampex stuff, you‘ll have to align the machine to the RTM tapes. Nevertheless the A-80 sounds awesome anyway. Little advice: put a ppm meter ( RTW or ATP ) in the input chain to obtain the optimum record level for the machine. 😀
I'd love to see the inversion comparison between tape and source, like you demonstrated for MP3 in the video you made about the inversion technique. It can be hard to tell what's really there and what's placebo, seeing you switch between the sources like that. So it'd be neat to see/hear the empirical difference between the two.
Them Detroit boys used to splice there tapes and put the 909 drums backwards...........Track you played reminds me of Nuyorican Soul /Rotary Connection 😎
Oh my Darwin! I love your music Claudio-Dr. Mix! Your videos and your team are amazing! I’m a Mexican producer living in Japan and I enjoy every day your videos while I’m on the crowded trains in Tokyo. I’m very glad I found your channel. I produce all my music with Reason, Logic and the Arturia collection. I wander if you can make a video about Reason 10. All the best Claudio!!!
I used to repair and line-up these machines, including A800 2" tape machines. Sham you use the fixed blade to cut your tape and not an aluminium block stuck to the deck offering 45° and 90° edits with a free single-edged razor blade, pizazz personified Claudio. With your ears surely you can hear a 45° edit, there's a good example on the beginning/end of Pink Floyd's The Wall. BTW have you checked the safety mods for the A80? Some of the wires that supply the motors can be loose enough that they get chaffed by the exposed rotating part of the motor inside.
What I notice mostly is the change in texture in the mids.. it sounds creamy and "glued" together. Top end becomes rounder, low end becomes more compact.
Where are the electronics for the tape machine? That's a pretty risky way of loading a pancake reel. Points off for not using a splicing block and a fresh razor blade but at least you are using RTM instead of ATR. That piano with the synth setup is pretty rad would like to know more about that.
Awesome (just added Urban Sessions to my Apple Music too - absolutley love it). I would love to know how you guys run all of your outboard gear in your studio!
Perfect opportunity to invert the phase of one of the audio files, keep both tracks perfectly time aligned, bring up the fader gradually of one track while the other is playing. Then you can hear EXACTLY what the tape machine has done because all of the identical waveforms in each track will cancel each other out due to phase cancellation, leaving just the extra added enhancements created by the tape machine coming out of the monitors. The thing is, it's probably too subtle for people brought up on a diet of dubstep and trap :(
i would have imagine that the color of tape recording was from recording analog to it or at least to play tape back a without digital chain. What s your sampling rate then when you record it back digitally, do you oversample ?Thanks
hi big boy in a toy shop i have a otari mtr 12 my self the pancakes you got are very likely for 12 inch reels i like otari unit's be could i can change to 1/2 inch tapes on my unit

That Urban Sessions album really is so damn good!!! I listen it on Tidal now, for days. The playing of all instruments are incredible good and you can hear very good who's playing the key's;-). Also the mixing and mastering is fabulous. I can't sit still when I listen it. Are there new albums coming in the future? Also listened to your own album "After Hours Ritual feat. Dave Weckl & John". This is you or am I wrong? Anyway, thanks for sharing all the good stuff and I hope you will keep doing this for a long time. I didn't play music for a long time but seeing the fun you have in playing gave me inspiration and set up my gear again and am busy to setup my Mac again to play some music again. And I love Reel to Reels😍.
If you're just spooling tape from one spool to another, why run it across the head and capstan section? I would think that would increase wear and tear on all components involved.
id love to see you making tracks with the Maschine and boss 505 then record live to the tape or go proper old school and make a tape loop to send into Maschine to build a track ?
LOL...I simply unscrew the reels, swap the tape pancake for the empty hub...of course if you have fancy hubs to wind the tape on...then you will have to fast forward a tape anyway (done that too)
ATR still makes tape here in the US too, they're great as well
long life to analog, thank you for bring us the beauty of this perfect machine
A consumer dream. Only those who know and have a love for production know how much this equipment has emotional value. Total 80s. Dr Mix is the guy
ooh yes, some nice warmth and saturation with the tape!

Could you please make a video about the background of Dr.Mix, how did you found it and where the idea came from.
Ok, I’ll do it!
@@Doctormix I love how responsive you are. Looking forward to this video. Cheers man! Keep it up.

The RX Reels are also beautiful and really pack the tape perfectly.
Loved the new items you received and the presentation. Continue to enjoy yourself.

Hey man! Really? Cool :-) so you know your way around the splicing tape huh? 🤟
You really love your tape recorder. :D And it makes senses, it´s cooooooool.
It drives me crazy that you didn't clean the machine before putting on the new reels .. 🤯 .. anyway great video as always .. love the analogue content. :)
He replied on the live chat that it wasn't dust. It's wear marks...
Very good video. And very good tape recorder. Congrats. From Brazil.
I'm in love with that machine! Love the red reels!
Fantastic! I had an AKAI GX 4000 Db. I did a lot of remixes. Great video, I went back in time.
Your voice is one of those you forget how much you love when its been a while, like with Matt Shultz, the lead singer of cage the elephant, I realize I love it after hearing it.
Not subtle. WOW! Huge sound!
I think so too :) But I have to assume that not all ears are trained as much as mine 🤣
Tape hiss is so nice.
I enjoy your passion. Very nice machine.
Are you going to do some tape loops ☺️ ? I'd love to hear the Claudio interpretation of Ambient tape loops 😉

Nothing makes me happier then using my real to reel.
That studer sounds amazing.
Doesn't it? :) I love it
RTM is not the only company making new tape. In the USA there is ATR Magnetics and they use the Ampex formula.

Nice idea!! Yes 15

Feels like an unique track and less segmented than the digital one, a little bit more enthralling. Good for some music, less for other, nice video.

To be fair he was only splicing on some leader tape, it's not like he was trying to make a sonically transparent edit mid song.
Little bit muted high frequencies, but nice harmonics added at low-mid. Am I correct? ;)
What I notice mostly is the change in texture in the mids.. it sounds creamy and "glued" together. Top end becomes rounder, low end becomes more compact.

I should do that
