Great comparison, thank you for that! Although I know the sound we heard is not close the real sound of these high end machines, there was a difference. The first - Studer - was smoother, but a little bit veiled, the 2nd - Telefunken - more realistic, refined, but punchier. Thats what I heard. Both are super, but I preferred the sound of the 2nd machine.
Besten Dank für deine Bemühungen.. Für mich war die 2. Version besser.
Yes, the original tape was recorded in 2x2mm format. I don't think I have ever seen a master tape recorded in 2x2.75mm, actually... well, maybe one or two.
Many thanks for this video, my choice is the second one and I guess it is Telefunken. With your hint of the oscillograph image it is a visual prove. Please tell us about your high quality switch.
The second example is punchier, and more dynamic. I'm not able to draw a conclusion as to which is better sounding. How do you connect the oscilloscope into the mix?
Yes, I would be happy if you could do a comparison test between the a807 (which I know from one of your videos that you own) and one of your great machines that you have. There are so many people who own this widespread machine that without your help they would not be able to decide whether to invest in a better machine. Thanks!
@@DimitarBorisov-i6j It's been long time since I used the machine. My honeymoon with it was brief, as I was disappointed in its sound. The sample I have is very, very clean, low hours, so it is not its condition causing it. It is also not poor calibration, as I did my best, and there was no evidence of any malfunction, but its sound still failed to impress me. I thought it was dull and uninvolving. However, that was quite some time ago, so perhaps it makes sense to take another look... especially since the machine feels so nice in operation.
@@Foxbat9000It would be great for all of us to hear after all this time how you would rate this device again based on the experience already gained. Personally, I have other great devices, but I feel like this device is somehow underrated and could be a good deal for the money it costs. I would love to hear a comparison test with one of the holy grails for me, namely the crown cx 822. 😊
@@DimitarBorisov-i6j I did the comparison with CX-822, it is a wonderful machine... definitely with some concerns and inconveniences, but certainly capable of wonderful sound.
I'm reasonably sure the Telefunken is incorrectly laced up, tape should go behind the second idler wheel - though it is 15 years since I last used one in anger. The Studer was a far better machine for razor blade editing though.
No, you are not correct regarding the lacing, and if you look carefully you can see the line below the tape, showing the proper tape path. As far as editing... there is a video on RUclips showing a German engineer doing editing on Telefunken - with the proper attachment it goes very, very fast and accurately.
@@Foxbat9000 Whoops, brain fade, my apologies. The version I used had the tape heads facing the front and had a manual tape lift lever in addition to the pinch wheel lock - consequently the tape path was behind the idler wheel. Thinking about it it was probably one of the many machines produced for the BBC World Service.
But I never said #2 was the Telefunken. :) I have not been able to go back and revisit it, as my preamp misbehaved... I have the replacement part so will try to do it in a few days.
Ok, now I’ve seen everything. Comparing mastering quality tape players by listening to a room mike through RUclips’s processing and by watching a distant scope’s lissajou pattern for stereo image. Deep breath. Move on.

Excellent….IMO I thought that the piano (on the first play back)-was smoother…(on the second play back) was more dynamic & cleaner

This is a custom switch that I developed and specified for some of our products 30 years ago. It selects one out of five balanced inputs.
The second example is punchier, and more dynamic. I'm not able to draw a conclusion as to which is better sounding. How do you connect the oscilloscope into the mix?
The oscilloscope and the signal output are connected in parallel, it is very simple.
It's a gret job.
The second plays better.
Hi Fox Bat, do you have a Studer A807? Or do you have an opinion about this deck?
Thanks!

Could you tell if the first machine was using the original or the copy?
The original was on the Telefunken.

@@stevejones4061 Understood, not a problem! :)
I prefer the Telefunken mojo
I still need to run the test again just for myself... but too many things get in the way.
Как-то даже обидно за A80 😢

Мне показалось, что контрабас играет явно чище во втором случае. Фортепиано возможно тоже..
