Thanks for putting this up! I've been searching for the last couple of hours to try and find someone that shows the difference made in VR with a processor upgrade. I've been hesitant to upgrade from my 2700x since I primarily play games in 4k. I went ahead and ordered a 5800x after finding this; I now feel much more confident that it will make a difference in my VR gaming, primarily sim racing. I wish more people posted VR content with different hardware iterations.

@@vfragos yep, I've installed the 5800x. I run both the Q2 & G2 with a 2080ti. I've seen some improvement with the Q2 in games such as Rally 2.0, but I wouldn't call it drastic. It is noticeable though. The G2 has been a little harder to tell a difference with, but there are a few games it's noticeable in. I'd say the 2700X is still a good CPU for the majority of modern games, including VR. That being said, I'm happy I went ahead & upgraded. It gives me more headroom to tinker with settings. With u having a 3080ti, my opinion would be go ahead with the upgrade when u can. Why take any chances of limiting what it can do.

At lower resolution you aren’t taxing the GPU so it highlights the CPU being able to pump out frames. Higher resolutions such as 4K you become GPU bound and the CPU doesn’t have to do as much work. Except in iceRacing which is so badly optimized for multi core and so dependent on just a single core but being a game engine from 2008 that’s expected. Great gains from on these 5xxx chips. Hopefully in January I can swap one in for my 3900X.

What this test shows nicely is how sims are different to most of regular gaming. Sims are very single-thread oriented, just like most games, but compared to regular games, sims also need a lot of that CPU power to run well, while normal games don't really need that much (most of the time). So if replace a CPU that has OK-ish single-threaded performance and good multithreaded performance with a CPU that has excellent single-threaded performance and OK-ish multithreaded performance, you'll see a noticeable improvement in most sims (if your GPU is up to the task), because you've improved what matters most to the sim, the single-core performance. On the other hand, you'll see less of an impact in regular games, because they already were not as CPU-limited in the first place, so didn't really need even more single-threaded CPU power, because most of the time, you will likely be GPU limited, even with a 3090 (and doubly so in 4k, as you've discovered yourself ;) )
So when gamers tell you that you need the best GPU possible for gaming and CPU is not really that important as long as it manages to do the job, it doesn't apply to simracing well. In simracing, you want the best CPU (with the best single-threaded performance you can get), and then match the GPU to your needs (based on your target resolution, detail levels and framerate).
And you can also pretty much ignore any CPU beyond 6 cores/threads if you're looking for a way to save some money. Sims will currently not take advantage of more than that, and with the exception of ACC and AMS2 (for which those 6 cores/threads is plenty, as long as the single-threaded performance holds), all of them run on 1-2 threads, really, and will never utilize more.

The reason you are not seeing gains in 4K in for example Forza Horizon & Watchdogs Legion, is probably because the GPU is the limiting factor there (its also seen to be at 90+ most of the time in the top right). Could even simply be a Vram issues, where the GPU would have something left otherwise.. since the 3080 with its 10GB is a bit limited on that. Great video! Would love to see a 6800(XT) vs 3080 comparison if you could get one! Currently on a 5700XT which is somewhat struggling with ACC on triple 1080p because AMD underperforms a bit in ACC. At 4K or high-res your GPU will almost always be the bottleneck, which brings faster and slower CPUs somewhat ''closer'' in comparison to 1080p or even 1440p, where an upgraded CPU will generally make more of a difference. It can still make a big difference in 4K, but only if the CPU isn't fast enough to supply the GPU with what it needs so to say. Or when you turn down all the settings to lowest in 4K, you might also notice more of a difference.

I think you are misunderstanding something.
When your CPU is limited to something like 60 fps, like the 3700x in parts of this video, thats a hard limit.
It doesnt matter whether you have a CV1 or a Reverb G2, it doesnt matter wether you have a 1050ti or a RTX 3090 - you wont get more than 60 fps no matter what.
When people say that the CPU matters less at high resolutions, what they really mean is that it matters less at lower framerates - when you are playing the newest AAA-titles at 4k ultra your graphics card cant hit more than 60 fps anyways, so that CPU limit of 60 fps is kind of irrelevant.
When youre playing VR however, you always want to hit a stable 90 fps, so you are very much CPU limited no matter the resolution.

Paired with a powerful enough graphics card, it will produce the exact same framerate at 1080p and 4k.

The sudden frame drop to 60 on Brands Hatch seem to be an issue with the current NVidia driver. It's the same for all models, not just the 30 series. As you can't revert to a former working version, for 30 series owners, it's resolved soon hopefully, but not limited to Ampere architecture luckily. :)

wow. 75fps o 90fps with the same settings and same gpu. nice. people keep telling me a cpu upgrade is pointless for vr, but in sim racing which is what i use vr for most, especially with lots of traffic/ ai/ cars etc. the cpu is important.
i am getting a 5900x to upgrade from my 3700x. also a used 3080ti to upgrade from my 2070 super.
then a reverb g2 is next on the list. the price has gone up since i bought one and had to return it due to it being faulty, and im not willing to pay more than i did then, so i will wait. if the price never goes down i will stick with my lenovo explorer until a new PCVR only headset enters the market, or an hp reverb g3 gets released. jeeze wouldnt that be nice! although i have heard rumours they are quitting the vr headset market, which would be a shame since they are the only real option for pcvr at the moment. and one of the best headsets out there. all they need to do is to invest in IR tracking instead of visible light then they will be unbeatable.

He said it is playable but didn't bother to press a key to move the car? Wtf? Feel like a waste of my time
