Here is a fun fact about the Dreamcast's Windows CE usage: It isn't actually installed on the system itself! Instead, the game discs actually supplied their own OS which was booted from the Dreamcast's boot menu. The alternative for the developers at the time was SEGA's Katana OS. Also, that is not just a regular old version of Windows CE, it has been custom tailored by Microsoft to contain Direct X.
Bright Spark There isn't a Katana OS. There is a Katana SDK for the Katana Dev. Box, which provides a set of libraries for low-level access to the components and it is up to the developer to either use them or create their own if they have some need to fulfil that the standard libraries can't provide. Microsoft's Xbox provides a full OS which games run on instead of developers calling directly to the hardware (which is still possible).
glitchsmasher It really only influenced the Xbox controller, and that was because Microsoft was negotiating with Sega on having Dreamcast games play on Xbox, but the deal fell through. That's also why the original Xbox controllers have that huge logo on them; it was originally the VMU window.
slipAngle Also things like the OUYA and the Shield controllers. You can also see a fair bit of resemblance between the Dreamcast and Gamecube controllers.
dimmddr1 Interestingly, as I am sure Ben will show in part two, the analog worked like his one handed pinball, magnets and hall effect sensors, even the thumbstick.
I’d LOVE to see a new take on this build since the GDEMU has been released, SD card reader that replaces the optical drive for a digital solution, with a big enough card, you can fit a nice chunk of the library on a single card and I’m just imagining a second attempt of this using a Switch type setup where you actually have an SD card slot on the shell that can read those games directly off any card you pop in!
***** CFL just means compact fluorescent light. Cold-cathode lights still produce light by hitting a *fluorescing* layer with UV. CFL isn't at all "wrong".
I'm not saying that you're wrong about the type of light that's in there (because you're spot on), I'm saying that less specific isn't the same as wrong.
I waited all week for Ben to rip my heart out. Not only does he hate my favorite controller but he is also not using VGA. I am still happy to see him give some love to the DC and his small shout out to Dave Jones. Now to wait until next week to see how he handles the controller situation for this unit.
Blast from the past, man that really takes me back. I loved the DreamCast! I used to play the mini games on the VMU during class in high school haha. I'm excited for the next video :D
Ben, 'bout stinkin' time! I've been waiting for *YOUR* version of making the portable Dreamcast. I know you've said you were not going to make a video of it because of all the other guides that are out there for this mod, but we all know your videos are the best and most informative is why your take on it is the most wanted. Thank you! Now... my next hopelist is for you to make a video on how to make a wireless Dreamcast controller with modern tech. :D
Hey Ben, thanks for the details on the CFL to LED conversion for the PSOne Screen! That will make my (ongoing) GC Portable project easier and give longer battery life. Will there be details (schematics) on the switching power supply in the next couple of videos? I might be able to use it instead of the GC one!
aaaaahhhhhh this was so awesome, every minute of it. I can't wait to see the rest! Ben Heck is THE MAN! BTW that spiderman fishing pole caught fish for my nephews, little kivers!
After some research, Windows CE stands for Windows Embedded Compact. Often used for arcade games, or other smaller 32 - bit systems. While its big cousin Windows Embedded, is used in kiosks, ATMs, etc.
So I'm going to be going into the AirForce in a few months and I got to thinking. You haven't done a PS4 "military mobile" (shock proof, all within a tacticool case) build, how about that for an idea?
Ah, it felt so good watching this, even though I'm no electronic engineer, I'm very well acquainted with the insides of a Dreamcast, because I fix them as a hobby. (GD-ROM and potentiometer issues mostly) So this is definitely an add-on learning experience! Also, there actually still *was* a Phantasy Star Online server till late 2012, I spent a few hours playing it online!
For switching regulator you mean a DC-DC converter, right? I do appreciate how good this video is, especially for electrical engineers is a joy to see the applications to the gaming world. Of course to do all this stuff you need a very well equipped lab. Those Fluke multimeters do not come cheap =)
Hi Ben, Do you remember when the first picks of the Dreamcast prototypes were released they looked like they were very futurist. Please make one of those
Coming back to this video after 6 years and if Ben had waited to do this now, or did it again now, he would have the GDEMU, and DreamPSU, thus reducing the size of this project considerably!
Whaaaat? I always thought the Dreamcast controllers to be super comfortable! Granted, I only played with one once or twice, but IMO it was way better than the PS1 controllers (both models). Speaking of Playstation, the PS2 slim seems perfect for a portable! It's quite small and also quite thin!
SavageArms357 I'm used to the Dreamcast controller and I had to get used to using an Xbox360 controller for PC games... I think whatever you're used to is more comfortable.
I'd probably use a Wii, it's half the size and I believe the same power consumption with cleaner video output and can play both. Now I need to see if the Wii mini does GameCube still.
he keeps talking about the dreamcast controller, I personally love the dreamcast controller, one of the best controller I use...., and even inspired the design of xbox controllers u can see many similarities on both xbox and dreamcast controllers
The Dreamcast was WAY ahead of it's time and the controller with the VMU was a part of that. So, Ben, if you want a new project (and this is something I have been wanting to do) tear apart a VMU and make it better! COLOR screen, better battery, more memory and better computing power. Do that while retaining the functionality and I will have a renewed respect for you! Thanks!
11:13 Yeah... Windows CE was used for some of the games... Railroad Tycoon I believe was one? Likely to atrract developers with the idea of having access to a 'win32'(-like) API, but that didn't work out as expected...
i like your enthusiasm and eloquence in all your proyects no too serius about whats happend more for people like me that do not have any idea about technicalities
So there I was watching Gaming Historian on the Dreamcast and I decide to see if Ben Heck had uploaded any new videos... Muh sp00ky coincidence when he's making a Dreamcast Portable O_O Can't wait to see how this turns out, looks like it'll require a lot more expertise that probably any other portable he's done :D
Only thing i would change about this mod is adding VGA support since VGA is so easy to obtain on this console. Then having a switch between RGB and VGA for those older games wouldn't even be an issue. Not sure of that Sony screen can handle it by default though. Have to check the sync but otherwise a screen from most RaspberryPi sellers will include a variety of connectors.
Thumbs up for anything with screws, being able to disassemble, repair, and reassemble things is good. Gluing things together is what I did in kindergarten, okay in a pinch but not something any professional tech company should have adopted as a standard.
Franco Pellegrin Thanks man, it is disappointing to find glue or double sided tape inside cutting edge hardware. Newest down slide is devices where you can't even replace the battery without voiding the warranty. :/
The controller problem is actually a simple issue, the handles are 90 degree right angles but they need to be tilted inwards to the top like most controllers. It's more comfortable to keep your wrists straight for long periods of time while the DC controller causes more wrist bend in it's grip. Ben still would like you to try a DC controller and VMU 2.0 project, get past your emotions and make it better. Dream Pi, DC is online again. :D
Playing Quake 3 with my friends from my Dreamcast while they played on the PC is one of the things I did the most with my ol' Sega. Crappy part was PC client had to match the Dreamcast version which meant no updates :(
I am working on a gamecube portable that keeps the disc drive (I could make it flash, but I love physical media) I was inspired by a lot that I have seen online and, if you are the same ben heck I heard of in the past, your early designs, but I am going to make my portable more multiplayer focused and have the controller ports rather than a built in controller
Damn he makes stuff look so easy, I would like to see you water cool a console a PS3 or 360. The one and ps4 run pretty cool. Of maybe just some extra fans or heat sink mods and some led lighting. I have an older spare 360 and a broke fat 80gb PS3 I was thinking of tinkering with.
I'm re-watching this, so I might've actually said this before, but... "Let's give it another go!" I love the layout of the Dreamcast controller, and the VMU's are actually pretty cool, though not necessarily worth it, if you ask me... BUT, there is a big problem. It's not the cord thing, which is a slight niggle, but not that big a deal. Feel the controller. Run your fingers along its edges... Yeah! Everything is sharp! I feel like it's a slight redesign away from being one of the best controllers ever. There would still be personal preference issues, and possibly some slight layout tweaks, but the inarguable flaw would be fixed by simply rounding the edges like was done on its spiritual successor, the Xbox controller.
I never got bothered by that edge myself. Really like how ALL the controls are very close to the edge though, this makes the controller comfortable for endless hours at a time for me, while others make my thumbs hurt. And at the same time it feels meaty, there's plenty to hold onto. There's some hand repositioning effort needed when going between D-Pad and analog, but whatever, D-Pad was barely used anyway, though i guess that's the reason why this design hasn't resurfaced.
After everything said in the comments how about just how amazing this would be to own once done!!!!!!! I definitely would be the happiest guy to have it
I miss playing my Dreamcast think I need another ribbon cable for the gd-rom drive or I screwed it up somewhere else the time I tried to replace the orange led with a different color :)
Do you plan on finishing any project lately? 3 videos, all parts to different projects. Would love to see you finish them instead of doing other stuff first.

What do you mean by "the games don't lag"? I've never tried running a retail game on my development kit.
Look at a Dreamcast controller and then a modern Xbox controller, you can see how it influenced all modern controllers.
glitchsmasher It really only influenced the Xbox controller, and that was because Microsoft was negotiating with Sega on having Dreamcast games play on Xbox, but the deal fell through. That's also why the original Xbox controllers have that huge logo on them; it was originally the VMU window.

It also was the first console controller (that came with a console, sorry Saturn) to feature analogue triggers.
I loved DC'S controller

GDEMU is an SD card based replacement for the optical drive in Dreamcast console
not all DC models work with that, the USB-GDEMU is better tbh
Iv wanted you to do this forever so glad I waited for 2 years
Dude I just discovered your channel and I’m loving it. I totally get your dry humor. It’s also very informative!
"It's better to just glue things together, right?"
Nah, screw it. ;-)
I just waited for this moment for so long. Ben Heck + Sega Dreamcast. It finally happened.
It's 12:50 AM here, time for fun!! Thanks for keeping me up so late benny boy!
Hmm that screen looked quite dull and dark with LED's
Agreed. It doesn't diffuse very well either.
***** You made a portable genesis? awesome! can you post a pic of it?
Well thats too bad... How big was the build? about the size of a nomad xD
Are you inexperienced with li-ion batteries? and what type of screen is it? vga, composite, hdmi...
Ah yes, it would be pretty awesome for you to finish it with li-ion and a better screen though, wouldnt you say?

The dreamcast is capable of VGA output, could have taken advantage of that
not every game supports VGA mode, but every game supports RGB
Devia ter visto isto antes de tentar ligar meu Saturn no VGA deixando a tela preta...

Google for 'Dreamcast Portable'. Someone says: "This is the sort of thing that I would expect from Ben Heck", and that was written back in 2008!
