The Sign of the Cross is an expression of Faith and Remembrance of Christ’s Passion on the Cross. Even if done technically incorrect, it’s the faithful contemplation of what it represents that is of importance.
The way that Orthodox Christians make the sign of the Cross was done in the same way in Western Churches up until about the year 1200 AD. In a letter written by Pope Innocent III at that time he explains both as being used in the Church but no one knows exactly why it changed in the West. The Orthodox Church continues to use the original form.
This is not true.. there are manuscripts from syriac churches written by bar habreus and others that the cross was originally done from left to right until inside the roman empire they changed it to right to left. The oriental orthodox churches followed the original left to right and later on even the catholics started the following the original form. The eastern orthodox still maintain the altered incorrect form of right to left
To make the Sign of the Cross as the Orthodox, which btw the RC used to do as well, you touch your index and middle finger to your thumb to represent the Trinity. Your pinky and ring finger touch your palm to represent Christ's 2 full natures, human and divine. You start at the forehead, come down to the top of the belly, then to the right shoulder and push to the left shoulder, touching at each point. This can also be proceeded or succeeded by touching the floor, which is called a metania. You can make this for any reason, but it's always done during a doxology of the Lord where it is said "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. One God, now and ever and unto the ages of ages, Amen."
That’s a beautiful tradition, friend! RC using all 5 fingers is a representation of the 5 wounds of Christ. The difference between the sign of the cross is derived from the word order of “Holy Spirit” in Latin and Greek. Both languages place the word for Spirit on the left shoulder passing over the heart and the right shoulder for the word “Holy.” Because Greek and Latin have a different word order, the signing reflects that distinct meaning of each.

I think the Finnish example is wrong; the priest is not making the sign on the cross on himself but to the congregation, and he is probably a Lutheran priest, not a Catholic
Easy way to remember which is which is that eastern orthodoxy ends the sign of the cross over the heart with the thumb & 2 fingers (Holy Trinity). All others ends on the other side, which is wrong as far as eastern orthodoxy is concerned.

All are correct. The original sign of the cross was a small cross made on the forehead. Later priests and bishops would ‘cross’ the congregation to bless them and this passed into lay practice in differing ways

why do so many priests use the upside down cross of St Peter rather than the Cross of our Lord? ive noticed this quite often even within different priests within my own parish. or is it they are just being lazy/lukewarm?
About the Oriental Orthodox, maybe you don’t have seen it, & there is nothing here that refers to it. But we use different, starting from the way how our fingers pointed what I mean is when we use the cross method with our right hand & it also represents (that’s our fingers) about the holy trinity & make with these fingers a cross before we begin the sign in our body…. Again then we begin to cross, it’s from forehead to heart then left to right.
Coptic Orthodox do the sign of the cross with one finger, either the index finger or the thumb in a fist. This is in line with how the Syriac Orthodox and other OO rites do it. St. John Chrysostom states it was done with one finger. There are early records of Christians confessors having their index finger cutoff for this purpose.
Lets not be too legalistic. It has to come from the heartt out of love and reverence to the Lord....we are blessing ourselves so we do it meaningfully.
The practice of making the sign of the cross is deeply rooted in Christian tradition and carries profound theological significance. While there is no explicit biblical mandate prescribing how to perform the gesture, there are Bible passages and themes supporting both the western Catholic rite and Eastern Catholic and Orthodox ways of making the sign of the cross-whether starting with the left shoulder or the right shoulder. 1. From Left to Right (Catholic Practice) Catholics typically make the sign of the cross by touching the forehead, chest, left shoulder, and then the right shoulder. This movement symbolizes a journey from darkness (sin, often associated with the "left hand" or "left side") to light (grace and salvation, symbolized by the "right hand" or "right side"). Biblical Support: Matthew 25:33: "He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left." The right side is associated with righteousness and favor with God, signifying a movement from sin (left) to grace (right). Psalm 16:11: "At your right hand are pleasures forevermore." The right hand of God symbolizes divine blessings and eternal joy. Thus, the Catholic movement reflects the journey of redemption-turning away from sin (the left) and moving toward grace (the right). 2. From Right to Left (Orthodox Practice) Orthodox Christians make the sign of the cross by touching the forehead, chest, right shoulder, and then the left shoulder. This movement emphasizes the descent of God's grace from heaven (the right side, symbolizing Christ seated at the right hand of the Father) to humanity (the left, representing all creation). Biblical Support: Luke 23:42-43: "Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.’" The repentant thief on Christ’s right side received the promise of salvation, reflecting the starting point of grace on the right. Ezekiel 9:4: "Go through the city... and put a mark on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done in it." This "mark" is often seen as a precursor to the cross, signifying God's saving grace reaching all who are faithful. The Orthodox gesture reflects the flow of God’s grace-from Christ (the right) to the whole world, including the left. Theological Reflection: Both practices-the Catholic left-to-right and Orthodox right-to-left-express profound truths about God’s work in humanity: Movement from darkness to light (Catholic) or grace flowing to all creation (Orthodox). Both emphasize the Holy Trinity, as each movement is accompanied by the invocation of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. While Scripture does not prescribe a specific direction for the sign of the cross, these passages and theological reflections demonstrate that both forms are biblically grounded, theologically rich, and equally valid expressions of faith.
All are correct !! The two "versions" of cross sign has a simple explanation.. Why they both are correct ?! Because when you say "NEL NOME DEL PADRE, DELLA FIGLIA E DEGLI SPIRITI SANTI" you put your fingers on your right shoulder as you say "SANTI" , and the same you do when you pray in orthodox church, but there you say "SANTI SPIRITI" instead so they put fingers on the right side first, cause they say "SANTI" first. Its just a matter of language.
Thumb and 2 large fingers together (Holy Trinity). 2 small fingers in palm (Fully God and fully man, rememberance of His piercings). Crown to Naval (From heaven to earth). Shoulder to shoulder (For all Creation). Heart. Amen ☦
As a Catholic i realized i shouldn't put my fringers on " the son" part on my chest cuz for me it looks like a downward cross so instead i put it directly on my tummy part ✝️
The three "connected" fingers, thumb forefinger and middle finger" represent the Holy Trinity - the two remaining fingers resting on the palm represent the two natures of Christ. This carries the message of the Incarnate Christ glorified at the Right Hand of the Father, with the resting of the Holy Spirit as "governor" on our shoulders - His sweet yoke as He tells His followers!
@@JudithMatta In the western tradition crossing with five fingers represents the five wounds of Christ. We start the sign of the cross at the forehead, representing heaven and the seat of wisdom. We then go to the centre of the breast showing that Christ came to earth. Then the left side symbolic of Christ freeing the souls in Hades, finally to the right side since Christ sits at the right hand of God the Father.
Pope Innocent III created heresy of three-finger-cross that was appeared in Constantinople only after the union of Lyons with the latins. Before that, the Orthodox Church always had two fingers and it was preserved in Russia until the schism in the 17th century. The three-fingered sign of the cross is the heresy of theopaschism, as if the entire Trinity suffered on the cross, and not just Jesus. So no, those whom you call "Orthodox" did not preserve the original sign of the cross, but we Old Believers did.
According Habesha(Eritrea and Ethiopia) Orthodox "In the Name of the Father,of the Son,and of the Holy spirit One God Amen" By making crossing finger From Top of forehead(Indicating father up in heaven) ,to the lower chest(The Son Jesus Christ down to the earth in human form for our sin) then From Left to Right ( Holy spirit transfered us from hell to heaven) and then to the lower chest Having a deep meaning in Our Salvation,Trinity ❤
What's the point of the sign of the cross? There's nothing in the bible to suggest that the sign of the cross, as practiced in the catholic and orthodox churches, is to made for any reason.
An excellent example of what you can do when you have nothing to do : a video about how to do the sign of the cross. That's exactly the best way to show how ridiculous we can be when our piety finally oscillates between vacuity and the praise of emptiness. 1. From Left to Right (Catholic Practice)
Catholics typically make the sign of the cross by touching the forehead, chest, left shoulder, and then the right shoulder. This movement symbolizes a journey from darkness (sin, often associated with the "left hand" or "left side") to light (grace and salvation, symbolized by the "right hand" or "right side").
Biblical Support:
Matthew 25:33: "He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left."
The right side is associated with righteousness and favor with God, signifying a movement from sin (left) to grace (right).
Psalm 16:11: "At your right hand are pleasures forevermore."
The right hand of God symbolizes divine blessings and eternal joy.
Thus, the Catholic movement reflects the journey of redemption-turning away from sin (the left) and moving toward grace (the right).
2. From Right to Left (Orthodox Practice)
Orthodox Christians make the sign of the cross by touching the forehead, chest, right shoulder, and then the left shoulder. This movement emphasizes the descent of God's grace from heaven (the right side, symbolizing Christ seated at the right hand of the Father) to humanity (the left, representing all creation).
Biblical Support:
Luke 23:42-43: "Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.’"
The repentant thief on Christ’s right side received the promise of salvation, reflecting the starting point of grace on the right.
Ezekiel 9:4: "Go through the city... and put a mark on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done in it."
This "mark" is often seen as a precursor to the cross, signifying God's saving grace reaching all who are faithful.
The Orthodox gesture reflects the flow of God’s grace-from Christ (the right) to the whole world, including the left.
Theological Reflection:
Both practices-the Catholic left-to-right and Orthodox right-to-left-express profound truths about God’s work in humanity:
Movement from darkness to light (Catholic) or grace flowing to all creation (Orthodox).
Uma pena não mostrar os países de maioria muçulmana, talvez pq sejam proibidos de divulgar as missas via Internet.
A Síria e o Egito são de maioria muçulmana
I always make sure my sign of the cross doesn’t appear up side down.

Egypt is HH Youssef Absi, Patriarch of the Melkites, his siege is in Syria, not Egypt ( though Melkites are present there)
Thumb and 2 large fingers together (Holy Trinity).
What are the guys at the beginning try to do? Catch flies? It sure looks like it. Did they catch any?
The tagged Egypt is wrong it is in Lebanon (Zahle) the bishop Andre Haddad of the Byzantine Melkite Greek Catholic Church
Why do Roman Catholics use an open hand when making the sign of the Cross?
Only the orthodox. Three first fingers connected and the other two closed on the palm of the hand.
Yes, it’s the only method that actually makes a sign of the cross (head to belly then right to left) the catholic’s sign looks like an upside down T.
@@RLG6728The manner of the Old Believers is the most ancient form of the Byzantine form.
It's more like an upside-down cross⚓️

"In the Name of the Father,of the Son,and of the Holy spirit One God Amen"
By making crossing finger From Top of forehead(Indicating father up in heaven) ,to the lower chest(The Son Jesus Christ down to the earth in human form for our sin) then From Left to Right ( Holy spirit transfered us from hell to heaven) and then to the lower chest
Having a deep meaning in Our Salvation,Trinity ❤
What's the point of the sign of the cross? There's nothing in the bible to suggest that the sign of the cross, as practiced in the catholic and orthodox churches, is to made for any reason.
Right shoulder should be first. And the first 3 fingers to be gathered together, the rest 2 are to be pressed to palm.
Catholics the left shoulder comes first and a long cross, from the front head, way down the belly.
Does it really matter? Left, Right, three fingers, palm?
An excellent example of what you can do when you have nothing to do : a video about how to do the sign of the cross. That's exactly the best way to show how ridiculous we can be when our piety finally oscillates between vacuity and the praise of emptiness. From a catholic teacher who teaches religion and philosophy and believes more and more, day after day, that the Roman Catholic Church is actually the worst and clumsiest servant of his sincere faith.
I don't know where you're at or where you're coming from, but your comment sure makes it seem you're in a sad state.
You need prayer, bro? It's ok to ask because there's probably some folks here that will happily pray for you ...
Video is just clickbait so I can see why it may annoy you. But content showing people from around the world sharing in one Christian Faith is actually beautiful to see.
Try to see the good in this, bro!
I was Orthodox but now by the grace of God I became a Melkite Catholic, the Byzantine rite in communion with Peter and with Rome as it should be, amen.
А разница ?
😔
@@Templier- the orthodox are not in communion with Rome
The orthodox way is the oldest, with the united three fingers that symbolizes the Holy Trinity, you must cross yourself right, to the front of the head, to the belly, to the right shoulder, to the lelf shoulder. Amen!
6:23 Greece.
Just do the sign of the cross 👍🏽

What abt ethiopian Orthodoxy ur duplicated different countries vid like russian,indian... u must include eth Orthodox vid coz they r ancient church above 1700 yrs.

The Ethiopian Orthodox is full communion to the Patriarch of Rome or the Bishop of Rome coz the Ethiopian Orthodox is celebrated the feast of the Immaculate conception of the Holy Virgin Mary.

You forgot about old believers (most of them is russian) they have way what's is different and come from time when church was not divided.

Looks like the sign of an inverted cross. The length from forehead to the mid pt of the cross is longer than from the mid pt to the stomach. So it is the sign of an inverted cross. Sign of inverted cross is not of Christ.
Amen
United States and Mexico we are friend in the name of the Father the Son and Holy Spirit
