Michael Jordan 2002-01-31: 26 points and Gamewinning shot v Cleveland Cavs - The Shot part 3!

  • I was surprised that this game wasn't yet on RUclips. It is one of three game winners that Jordan hit in the 2001-2002 season where he only played in 60 games due to injury.
At age 38 and 348 days, Jordan dominated the whole game, not just the last seconds. He had 26 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists, but the stats dont tell the whole story. With Jordan on the court the wizards built a comfortable lead. With Jordan on the bench, the Cavs came back and actually built a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter. Jordan again led the Wizards back, either hitting clutch shots or making key assists.
Before the game, Cavs coach John Lucas was insisting Jordan is the league's first-half MVP. "He's doing it with smarts and not the same talent he had," said Lucas. "What he's done this year is off the charts. I know our league's [talent] is watered down. But these are still the best 300 players in the world and the best one is 39 (years old)."
Sorry that my edit misses 3 of Jordans shots, but my copy was missing the first quarter. The story below is from si.com
Jordan haunts Cavs with last-second jumper
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Only Michael Jordan, and only in Cleveland.
Jordan did it to the Cavaliers and their fans again, hitting an 18-foot jumper at the buzzer Thursday night to give the Washington Wizards a 93-92 win.
Jordan victimized Cleveland throughout his career with the Chicago Bulls, and although he's now wearing a Washington jersey, No. 23 still has the Cavs' number.
"Everybody in the place knew where the ball was going," Jordan said. "I've had some big shots in Cleveland, and they keep going in."
With 1.6 seconds left and Washington down 92-91, Jordan got free on a defensive switch and calmly drained his jumper for the Wizards, who trailed by 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Jordan's game-winner was almost identical to the shot he hit in Game 5 over Craig Ehlo at Richfield Coliseum in 1989 to beat the Cavs and eliminate Cleveland from the playoffs.
"There was no doubt. I wasn't worried," Jordan said. "There's only two things can happen, you make it or you miss it. I wanted a good look and I got one."
Jordan finished with 26 points and Chris Whitney had 20 for the Wizards, who trailed 85-73 with 7:43 remaining.
Wesley Person had 21 points and Andre Miller had 15 points and 12 assists for the Cavs, who took a 92-91 lead with 1.6 seconds left on Chris Mihm's putback.
All 20,562 fans inside Gund Arena knew exactly what the Wizards would try on their final possession.
Popeye Jones patiently waited for someone to get open and it was Jordan, who broke free on a slash toward the foul line and got open on a mix-up by Cavs forwards Jumaine Jones and Bryant Stith.
Jordan got a wide-open look, and after knocking his jumper down, he pumped his fist and was mobbed by his teammates -- just like he was 13 years ago.
Wizards coach Doug Collins, who was Jordan's coach in Chicago when he made "The Shot" in '89, just laughed and ran on the floor to high-five Jordan as the pair re-lived a special memory.
"No way," Collins said when asked if he jumped as high celebrating as he did in '89. "I got a bad hip.
"It wasn't exactly the same play, but it was the same result. I liked the way the horn sounded both times."
Jordan, who scored his career-high of 69 against Cleveland, has had a running feud with the Cavs all season.
Annoyed by the way Cleveland's Ricky Davis had dunked and pranced around in a Nov. 27 game here, Jordan responded with 40 points in a home win over the Cavs last week.
"I got to hear about this from Michael for the rest of the year," said Cavs coach John Lucas, who visited Jordan in the locker room afterward.
Late in the game, Lucas had tried to distract Jordan by talking to him as he inbounded the ball.
    Jordan just pushed Lucas away.
"I told him, 'Not now, this is money time'," Jordan said. "After the game he called me a couple names I can't say, I just asked him, "Who do you think was going to shoot?'"
Tempers flared in the fourth quarter when Wizards center Jahidi White tangled with Cavs center Zydrunas Ilgauskas. The pair went face-to-face before White head-butted Ilgauskas.
Both were ejected, but Cleveland rookie DeSagana Diop may have received the worst punishment when he was knocked to the floor by Cavs assistant coach Keith Smart as he tried to help Ilgauskas.
Jordan said the exchange fired up the Wizards, who were trailing 85-73 after missing 12 straight shots.
"It inspired us more than them," Jordan said. "It was energy we fed off of."
Richard Hamilton, who missed 17 games with a groin injury, had 10 points for the Wizards.
After outscoring Minnesota 45-4 in a stretch over two quarters on Tuesday night, the Cavs reeled off 13 straight points in a 22-4 spurt to end the third quarter and take a 74-71 lead.

Just unbelievable how quick and athletic he still was at nearly 39. This was one of those games when his knee was feeling good, and you can just see how effective he woulda been without the tendonitis.
A few things stand out: at :19, how hard he works to get free for the ball. An often overlooked aspect of his game, his off the ball movement. 1:02, the speed of his stop and pop. 2:05, the degree of difficulty on that shot is ridiculous. There are a lot of players in their prime today who can't

Look at Jordan's work off the ball from 18-22 seconds. A thing of beauty, and a very underrated part of his game. The pass is incredible, too. His body control and touch on the lefty alley-oop at the 52 second mark is awesome. Good to see you posting again jxn23.

It's such a shame that MJ got injured later that year. People automatically think that MJ's Wizards stint was an abject failure, but before he got injured, the man was averaging 25 ppg, 5+ apg and 5+ rpg -- the only other player that was doing that at the time was a 13 year younger Kobe Bryant. Not only that, but the Wizards were actually the number 4 seed in the East. Had MJ stayed healthy, I'm almost positive the Wiz would've made the playoffs and some noise too.

  • @jxn23
    @jxn23  15 лет назад

I agree - Jordan's comeback with the Wizards was not a failure, but some people think that it was because MJ won 6 championships in his previous 6 full seasons
At the allstar break in 2002 (before his injury got really bad) MJ was averaging 25.1 points 6.2 rebounds 5.3 assists 1.5 steals and 0.5 blocks at age 39. The Wizards were 26-21 after winning just 19 games the year before.
It's no wonder John Lucas said Jordan was MVP for the first half of the season.
    Thanks everyone for comments

Jordan was exciting for basketball see fans at road arenas cheered him on he was 4/4 on free throws that's the difference between then and now. Sure LeBron scores as much but that's because the refs favor him because he's the cash cow of the NBA. 30 points on 12/17 free throw shooting. See players like Jordan and Bird they wanted to shoot not drive in get the favoritism and shoot free throws all day.

Jordan was one of the greatest slashers of all time, and he used it to his advantage all the time. he didn't jack up shots from midrange. you're acting like playing smart and getting free throws is something new which tells me you don't know basketball. Jordan attacked the rim relentlessly.

Actually, it was 25+/6+/5+, and the only other player doing it that season was TMac, not Kobe.

Older than Kobe NOW (2011) whos slowing down, Jordan played much better and was much more effective !

If you're a Cavs fan, I don't even know that you could be mad when you see this.

@rakyaband LoL...He wasn't Richard Hamilton when MJ hit that shot...He was us, on the court w/ Michael Jordan as he hit a game winner...I can't blame him, nobody can.

did anyone else notice MJ's first basket counted for Cavs instead (of course they changed it back after).

When MJ came back with the Wizards, he said he did it to try and teach the younger players on the team the true game of basketball. I say bullshit. He did it to play the game and have some fun, also to kick Cleveland's ass yet again.

@plot000000 Man I'm a huge Kobe fan but if Jordan came and played at Staples Center TODAY I would have my MJ Jersey on rooting for whatever team he was playing on. Believe that!

Wow, pause at 0:53. Not quite head-at-rim level but pretty damn impressive for a 39 year old.
