Cheng Fei was too good for the 2001-2004 era. Powerful tumbling, elegant choreo and moves, absolutely clean, pointed toes, legs locked together. None of these was valued back then.

Probably my favorite floor routine ever. Proof that you don't have to be a "ballerina" to be artistic. It's about performance! That's what so many girls are missing today. With the 10 scoring system (and compulsories), you had to actually work to be perfect in all aspects. Now girls can just ride their difficulty scores and almost neglect the performance and artistry. LOVE this performance so much. What a wonderful combination of artistry and power. :)

Awesome! It's too bad that she lacked consistency on this event. Not to say that she didn't do well most of the time, but her results over the years reflect that she was either close to perfection (like here) or she would have a major mistake that would take her out of the medals (e.g. 2004 Olympics Floor EF, 2007 Worlds Floor EF, 2008 Olympics Floor EF). This is without a doubt one of my all time favorite Floor routines. There isn't anybody who has her combination of truly elegant dance (DANCING, not cleverly disguised POSING and/or ARM MOVEMENTS) and tumbling (Simone Biles is the greatest female tumbler ever, but she cannot dance like this). Every movement here is done utilizing every part of her body, as well as that intangible quality of the IT factor that simply CANNOT BE TAUGHT. You either have IT or you don't. Cheng Fei had IT!

By that code especially. It only cared about dance elegance while completely ignoring tumbling form. She had gorgeous technique on tumbling but a couple of little issues on leap combinations. Those shouldn’t have cost her as much as they did but the judges were forced by that system to hammer her. Once the open system came about she was a world floor champion (twice) while Ponor got bombed in execution.
