On my 85 dated speedo I found you didnt have to remove any of the 6 electronic speedo fixings on the back. Actually the mileometer is a completely separate mechanical only chassis which is just screwed on top of the electronic speedo part underneath. You can see in the video if you disturb that there is an insulation sheet plus 3 insulating doughnuts and dozens of wires on the then loose PCB and drive motor that will take a long time to put back and can get damaged and trapped. Just remove the needle and dial as shown and then remove the 4 screws holding the mileometer chassis and lift it out. The shaft pin and 2 c clip axles are clips are all presented to you. Change the gear and reassemble. When you have unpeeled the fascia flange it takes just 5 minutes . You may find the hardest bit is counting the teeth on whats left of the wheel. For the UK and MPH versions its a 20/30 tooth from 75-89.

Great video! Specially the tip on how to remove the needle without prying it off, thanks!

Thank you for making and sharing this excellent video! Probably one of the best "how to" videos I've seen. Gave me the confidence to dive in and take my speedometer apart to repair the odometer. It all came apart as you described. The replacement gear is now on order.

excellent video , showing exactly how to remove the needle.... which is the most vital and difficult part..I was unsure and followed a different video saying to pull and pry the needle ,I snapped the shaft on mine following that advice,( I found this vid to late, but has stoped me making same error again )

Legend! Thanks, wouldn't have been able to fix this without your video. I ended up pulling one of the wires out, by accident during the process, even though I was trying to be very careful. Anyway, will re-solder and all will be well. Thanks again!

Just did the common gear replacement repair on my '86 Turbolook using the details in Charlies very helpful video, where the white gear off the worm gear drive loses a tooth or two and stops. Bought the gear @ Pelican for $25. I admittedly forgot to mark the placement of the needle before removing, so I simply guessed the placement (basically @ 0 mph mark) and then installed the unit in the car (without putting the glass and final bezels on), so that I could calibrate the speedometer using my WAZE phone app to understand mph. Have your wife or friend go with you and monitor the mph's, see if your speedo is reading high or low mph's, when you come to a stop, make your adjustments to the needle (carefully) against the 0 or 160 stops until to you get close to calibrating with your actual mph's. We got the correct calibration after only the first adjustment - with the speedo reading ever so slightly lower than actual - keeps the PO-PO away!
I agree with some that there is no need to remove the any of the back screws or electrical buss connector, assuming your unit has the common break of the white drive gear. I would also suggest replacing the 3-4 2watt illumination bulbs while the unit is out - all mine worked, but they were really yellowed after 37 years and would most likely go out in a week or two, knowing how Mr. Murphy works. Lastly, remember to take a picture of the untouched outside trim ring (remove the rubber mounting gasket) before you begin and mark the date you took the picture on the housing of the unit so it shows in the picture, this way, you can verify to anyone (future buyer?) that the speedo had never been repaired/altered before you owned the car or did the fix. It is VERY apparent if the unit has been previously opened. My car has only 57,582 miles and I wanted to make sure that I documented that those miles were original.
If anyone is uncomfortable doing this repair, I'd be glad to do it for you for a nominal fee - it is absolutely ridiculous what some online repair facilities are charging for this easy fix, with quotes of $350, $400, and $475-$580 and some suggesting a 4-5 week turnaround time. With the learning curve over and the replacement gear in hand, it would probably take me a total of 30-45 minutes to do the repair - the most onerous portion is just getting the outside trim ring removed and then removing the needle, ever-so-carefully. Thanks again Charlie, Cheers!

Thank you so much for this video. It allowed me to fix mine, and I reference it in a video I took of my “non mechanic” follow along version.

I use a large hose clamp around the gauge to prevent the face ring from distorting when peeling it open, these plastic gears all seem to fail in time .

Definitely helps to have this video. The only snag I ran in to so far is, I bought the wrong gear. There are different tooth counts, not sure why. Right one is on its way.

It's not working, wish I knew how to bench test it. Gear went in without issue. Put it all back together and still no milage count increase, speeo works fine.

Yes he will repair your speedometer if you send it to him. Please just wait a few days until he repairs mine for a very reasonable cost.

Unless I missed something, there doesn't seem to be a need to remove the speedo workings from the back of the case and mess with the fine electronics.. The odo gear stack seems like comes off of the speedo unit with just the front four screws. I'll be doing this soon and can rprt back.

I just took out my 1988 911 and the odometer is stuck like the one in this video. I’m wondering if I send mine to you could you make the repair? I noticed someone else is also looking for theirs to be repaired, you could make a couple of us very happy.
      Thanks in advance, Joe

I did not remove the rear screws - just the four under the face plate - got it back together and it works perfect - Thanks for the detailed instructions.

Really great detailed video, thanks!. Only problem for me...I cant seem to get odo out of the dash. Its seems to be really tight and not budging at all. I have plastic trim tools but hard to get around the gauge. Any tips, would love to see a video on this.

Grab ahold of the outside ring of the speedo gauge and rock it back and forth, it should loosen up and separate from the dash. if not use a knife and carefully lift it away from the dash. It can also be pushed from inside the dash, but not a lot of room. The only thing holding it is a rubber ring. Once you have it out, there are 3 lights and 3 electrical connections that pull out. Should apply to most air-cooled 911/930's. Good luck.
