  • The F-15EX is a ready-now replacement for the F-15C that includes best-in-class payload, range and speed. Designed to deliver value to the U.S. Air Force, the F-15EX will be a backbone fighter for the service - not just today, but for the next several decades. Boeing engineers created hundreds of digital aircraft before cutting any metal, and flew thousands of hours before our first test flight. The result is an aircraft with a digital backbone, open system architecture and the capacity to carry hypersonic weapons, making it a key element of the U.S. Air Force’s tactical fighter fleet.

When a modernized, bulked up F15EX is your "low" option in a high/low force structure with F35/F22's as the high option, you're doing juuuuust fine.

Yeah but the overall cost for the "low option" you call the F-15EX is actually $10mill.more per unit than the F-35's.They're paying $10mill.more per jet just to save $9-10k in hourly operating cost.I find that questionable seeing as our enemies seem to be focusing solely on stealth technology and that we have close to or a little more than 500 F-15's still in service over 4 squads with another 150 new F-15 EX contracted with Boeing over the next few years to replace some of the aging F-16's and F-15e.

@@topseykretts251 10,000 hours times 30K per hour is $300M. A good portion of our future flying is going to be inside an air superiority bubble, where generation doesn't mean squatoosh, and being invisible doesn't help when no one can see. Also, nobody talks about it, but the F-35 can't carry shit in stealth mode, armament wise, relative to the F15EX. My point is, if you are going to adopt a high/low strategy, having the F15EX be your low is not bad. Your argument is don't be high/low - be all high.

@@topseykretts251 f-15 can carry way more payload than the stealth fighters. With its upgraded avionics and technology it’ll be able to pass on and receive info from planes like the F-35 which has a strong enough radar to pretty much be like a small awacs plane. If a f-35 can find a target and see what’s around it etc it can relay that info to the f-15 pilot and they launch ordinance according to the received information also I’m sure the f-15ex is a little more maneuverable with the new fly by wire system similar to the one in the f-35 . As I understand it, the F-15EX is not at all intended to operate as an air superiority asset. It's intended to haul a massive amount of ordnance at high speed and altitude, utilizing datalink information from newer, stealthier planes to target said ordnance, and then to withdraw. The EX is an upgrade of the Strike Eagle, not an attempt to extend the glory days of the F-15 as an non-combat platform. The Eagle is already not stealthy, so there's little to be lost by loading it up. It can easily haul about 3x (or more) the ordnance of an F-35 in stealth configuration. If you're looking at a high-intensity combat situation that's going to require a massive response, do you want to send out a fleet of stealth-compromised Lightning IIs? Or send out a handful of extremely stealthy, clean Lightnings who are feeding targeting information back to F-15 missile trucks beyond enemy radar range? Seems like a pretty easy choice to me.

A F-35 can carry 24 GBU-53/B StormBreaker bombs. And the last 8 internal bombs can be dropped further out than the distance Russian radars are able to lock on to a F-35.
The F-35A can carry 2 AGM-88G AARGM-ER which it can launch unseen close to a radar where the F-15 couldn't even shoot the missile at max range unseen.
And a F-35 can carry 4 AMRAAM missiles internally and two AIM-9X externally, with 1000 F-35A in the air force that will be more then 10 AAM's per one Russian Air superior fighter that can fly here and now.
What is it the "missile bus" should be used for? It would be very hard even using it abroad as the development and export of modern long range SAM systems like the S-400 (That can track a aerodynamical design at 186 km) is ongoing.
Investing in a 50 year old 4th gen plane now is stupid, USAF could just as well dust of some of their old designs and use them while they start designing a light 5th gen fighter.
The F-15 solution is just doing it the Russian way where they give an old fighter new paint and call it Su-35. Russia lost the weapon race doing so, and now USAF copy the idea????

The F-35 is a lousy dog fighter, but it doesn’t have to be. Dog fighting is a thing of the past. So it doesn’t matter if the F15 can’t hold it’s own against more modern fighters in a dogfight either.
In stealth mode an F35 can only hold 4 missiles. So it goes in first takes out air defenses and directs fire for the F15-EX with it’s pod studded with missiles and bombs. Perfect combination. No doubt there will be some F22s on over watch to protect the F15s from enemy aircraft. I don’t think a one size fits all F35 solution is the best choice.

A completely updated F15 EX would make a great second wave fighter once all of the anti-aircraft assets have been neutralized or greatly diminished. The F-15 to date as in air-to-air combat is still undefrdeated, that speaks volumes all by itself. Yes I know you get the people that say dog fighting is obsolete. This isn't entirely true but for the some part it is. But we are talking about after the first strike has taken place, the enemy his gotten a blow and already have a huge hole in their defenses. I'll still take the F-15 for conventional air combat any day of the week. Once the need for stealth has been implemented which is obviously survivability in a first strike to evade modern and Advanced Air Defense systems. A fighter such as the improved F-15 variant seems like a very viable and cost effective option.

I'm no expert, but from what I can tell, one of the the main weaknesses of 5th gen fighters compared to 4th gen (ignoring costs) is weapons load (due to need store internally). My prediction is that there will be increased use of 4th gen fighters (and drones) as weapons carriers/systems integrated with 5th gen fighters. The 4th gen fighters would loiter back and 5th gen fighters would target and control the weapons systems of the drones and 4th gen fighters. The 4th gen fighters would not be invulnerable to opposing attack but I am sure the vulnerabilities could be minimized significantly by distance.

    • @Laerei
      @Laerei Год назад +1

The misunderstood thing about 5th gen is that they HAVE to carry weapons internally. That is not true. Pylons can be attached to F-22 and F-35 at any moment to allow to carry additional weaponry externally and perform operations as well as any 4th gen fighter jet. However, that does put a damper on it's stealth capability.
This is why F-15 is still needed as why do one or the other when you can have both at the same time? F-22s and F-35 are in the frontline, even beyond it, taking down critical targets like enemy combat air patrol, AWACS and SAM sites, while F-15's swoop in and unload their hoard of missiles into mission targets that are left defenseless. F-35s can infact guide those missiles after F-15 has fired it from a safe distance.
Otherwise, once air superiority is achieved, 5th gen planes can be equipped with pylons to carry additional ordnance.

Compare the capabilities of a Eurofighter and Rafale to an F-15, and its frankly embarassing that the US is even considering F15-EX'. The F-15 is an inherently outdated airframe, it has poor maneuvrability both in low and high altitude/speed regimes, high drag, high radar signature, limited payload, no supercruise, etc. The EX wont change much about that.
And its hardly even cheaper, the F-15 was never designed to be a low cost fighter and the modern tech like radars are so expensive that even your budget F-16s sometimes cost almost as much as Rafales.
Im not even gloating about this, being european, but this is really bad for NATO and especially the situation in the south china sea. America has no modern, dedicated fighter aircraft besides the limited arsenal of F-22s, while China is mass producing J-20s. Even american missile tech is way out of date, fricking russia has hypersonic cruise missiles, while americans hardly even posesses supersonic cruise capability. European air to air missiles are way superior to american cold war stuff. The US navy is actually loosing firepower and capabilities despite increased spending.
Idk, the US still has the most powerful military, but theres something deeply wrong with it. Like it was just screwing around the last 20-40 years.

How many enemy planes has it shot down in anger? 0.
The F-22 was built to fight WWIII in the world stuck in the 1980s.
There is not one enemy the US has fought in the last 40 years that its 4th generation planes could not take care of.
In today's world if there was a World Wat its be all about cruise and ballistic missiles, space, cyber warfare and anti missile technology.
Within the first 24 to 48 hours of a world War, I don't care what kind of 5th generation warplanes you have, they would be sitting ducks in their air field and aircraft carriers.
So would their maintenance crews, command centers, their fuel and weapons depots.
Why? That is because there is not one air base in the world including deep inside of the US Mainland itself that is out of range of Chinese and Russian cruise and ballistic missiles.
Within 30 minutes they can hit anywhere on the globe.
And even if your planes take off before that where would they land when they run out of fuel, where would they resupply with weapons and do maintenance.
It's all about ballistic and cruise missiles now.
The warplanes is only for dealing with countries with 3rd tier militaries and for those countries US 4th generation planes were more than a match for them.

Your off your head mate, I believe you misunderstood the F15 EX. It was never going to be used as an air superiority fighter but as a garrison aircraft, heavily loaded up with ordinance of all varieties including the newest and in development munitions. Including the cannon ammo this puppy can carry 13.5 tonnes of freedom. Sitting of at the edge of the battle space the EX using Link 16 digital data link the EX will be able to swap sensor information with all other equipped aircraft on its all new complete glass cockpit. Other more modern stealth aircraft in the battle area will be able to task the EX to launch weapons from its huge arsenal against targets the pilot never even sees. This may look like an F-15 but believe me, the comparison ends there.
IT may not be stealth however it doesn't need to be, its a bomb truck for the real stealth aircraft.

Focus on the next generation of fighters instead of fielding near-term capability? Would an F15 EX or a generation 5/6 fighter be ready to field first (assuming generation 5 fighter output can be increased)? I think therein lies your answer, it is based in no small part on urgency. Also it can carry "out-sized" munitions the F35 cannot. The US is developing much longer ranger anti-radar (to take out SAM sites), air-to-air, and repurposed real-time tracking anti-ship missiles and bombs. What would make sense is a platform that is very fast, high-flying, and had a good armament payload... all of which the F15 has in spades. An F15 EX can sling a missile / bomb at Mach 2.0 a LOT further than an F35 which has achieved sustained speeds much lower than the Mach 1.6 it was meant to fly (and therefore the F15 has a much better stand-off capability). I'm not sayin the F15 EX is a better aircraft than the F35... but after the initial phases of the fight when stealth and cruise missiles are used to neutralise most of the surface to air threats there is no reason that reliable generation 4 fighter-bombers shouldn't come to the forefront in a (hopefully theoretical) conflict again - especially when used along with electronic warfare / stealth platforms. Also, I am a bit confused

So, USA should stop new programs and go the Russian way where "development" is just upgrading planes and give them a higher model number? Use 45 year old 4th generation planes?
Because you cant get it all, the F-15 will be more expensive per hour then the F-35 = You need to take the money from the development programs.
AND you will need other planes to jam for the F15EX, to run escort for the plane and to clean up the battlefield for the plane. Why not just create a Boing 747 with a Sh*t load of missiles instead of the F-15EX? If the ground are cleared for radars and SAM sites it really doesn't matter what plane you use`. And the range, a 747 can stay in the air for ever with an assortment of missiles (This IS a joke)..
A F-35 can do everything a F15EX need three planes to do for it.
Oh, and the next generation US fighter have been flight tested already. But as long as funding are being put in 45 year old planes, development will be slow.

@@babychuma1 Russia have 570 modern air superiority fighters of which around 450 are ready to take of here and now. Who is it the F-15EX is going to fight? 23 F15-ex can carry more AAM then all the planes Russia have?
IF the US air force get the 1000 FIFTH GENERATION STEALTH F-35 they want, they can carry more than TEN AIM-120D missiles per Russian air superiority fighter that exist (And dont forget the 186 F-22 Raptors that can carry 6 AIM-120D missiles each = 2½ more per Russian fighter). And the F-35 can operate in enemy airspace without the need for jamming planes, Stealth escort planes and Anti radar planes supporting it.
And with the planned 1000 F-35's (Which could be delivered WAY faster if US didn't waste money on historic planes that rolled out in the cold war) it will be 20% cheaper to operate a F-35 then the F-15EX.
And, the F.15EX is only intended as a defensive fighter over USA, it is not built to participate in wars outside USA. You can't use it against any Russian backed country as they have mobile SAM systems with passive radars. Where the Russian SAM systems would need active radar to even have a chance to track F-35 and F-22's, it would be able to track a F-15EX from a long distance using the passive Tropa radar only. And you cant use ARM missiles against passive radars = You need F-35's to play Wild Weasel's to lure the enemy to turn on the radars before you get space for a F-15 EX can enter an area.
The F-15EX COULD go low to avoid the passive tracking, but have you read about the new SA-25 MANPADS system? It is not a healthy place for a plane anymore.
There is a reason the F-15EX fleet is intended to protect homeland USA against the 4000 planes they can shoot down if the enemy doesn't fly in stealth planes that is.. But even at home it is way crappier then the F-22 that doesn't need to risk being shot down when it intercept a possible enemy.

  • @MrFarnanonical
    @MrFarnanonical 2 года назад +4

ok, first off.. the F-15EX is NOT solely designed for air superiority. It's a 4+ Gen Strike Eagle. Second, It's absolutely still capable in an air superiority role. The radar and kinematics are still better than everything else, so once the AIM-260 comes out it's going to sling them way further than an F-35 is going to be able to. The higher and faster a fighter can go further and more lethal its BVR missiles are and increases the chances of defeating income missiles and the F-15 is still very fast and carries a lot of weapons.
That's one of the biggest issues with stealth fighters flying air superiority. They simply can't carry enough missiles internally. A lot of people are talking about the F-15EX being a missile truck for 5th gen fighters, but what they're not considering is that it can also guide the stealth fighters missiles from stand-off ranges with its powerful radar, allowing the F-22/35 to keep their radars off and avoid being detected by the enemies radar warning receivers.
The fact is that in BVR the F-15C is still an absolute monster, and the EX is even better because of its increased networking compatibility. The SU-35 might have an advantage in WVR but pilots do whatever they can to avoid WVR. When flying as a 4 or even 2 ship the less effective things like thrust vectoring become. If you look at the F-15EX and think that because it's not 5th gen then it's useless then you don't know what you're talking about and you're looking at this through a very narrow lens.
