I recently got the RE-20 and here are a few things. A cloudlifter makes the world if you have a noisier pre-amp/mixer (I do, it makes such a difference with one). After mixing this things sounds absolutely insane, with such little background noise. This thing is also heavy compared to most mics and if you don't get a strong boom arm or stand.... Good luck... This Mic sounds absolutely insane, I wouldn't trade it in for another mic if I could. (Ps. I have a loud fan in the hallway and a fan running med speed behind me and my voice stood out so much more than those sounds enough to say they were almost drowned out).
I'm a baritone and I love this mic! Use it for VO work mainly. The warmth it brings is golden, and it's like a standard shift instead of an automatic. You really have to learn how to use it, but it's never let me down.
Man. Now I really do want to get one. I do agree with you that the SM7B sounds better with your voice but I suspect the re20 will sound better on mine. Good job with trying it out! And thank you for sharing.
Oh purée ça déchire ! Merci infiniment pour tous ces moments de parfaite droiture et de rigueur scientifique. Merci pour tout ce temps que vous y consacrez. Vous êtes absolument génial.
The color is absolutely beautiful. Totally classic. Yeah, I bought and own the "Fawn beige" (which is what we see in your video) model. Lovely!!! Oh yeah,... it is PERFECT for recording trumpet, also. And of course you know,... it sounds EVEN BETTER in "Fawn beige".
Great review. The RE20 and 320 are 2 mics I haven’t tried yet and wonder if it’s worth it to go “all the way” to the RE20. Also, you wrote in a comment about a vintage RE20. What are the changes?
I volunteered to be a stagehand for a large scale music festival in my hometown (Pensacola Florida). The sound crew were using this microphone for the kick drum...
Good point about it varying from voice to voice. On me, I find the RE20 to be softer and warmer than the SM7B. (The SM sounds great but really dry on my voice.)
I actually like the color of that mic. Makes it look like a piece of industrial machinery, which is cool in my opinion. ...Though Rush Limbaugh's gold plated one is even cooler, lol.
Hey man your videos are epic, I need to buy some mics for my audio production company and we record many different voices. Are these fairly forgiving for people who aren't experts infront of a microphone. I'm leaning towards a dynamic mic, and currently this one. just curious if something was different on the background noise test. I heard no background noise from your keyboard. That is the first one of your reviews i have seen that had that.
Hey , If not much of a trouble , could a test / review video of hooking up the Behringer XM8500 dynamic microphone to the Behringer UM2 . Give your opinion on the noise levels and overall audio quality . Thanks .
We just want to know when are you going on the road for your singing career? LOL. Would like to hear the mic without it being connected to the focusrite compare to being connected. I have a Rodecaster Pro so I am wondering how the two would do together.
I see you reviewed this after the RE-320, which, while you describe it as having Variable-D and no proximity effect, for me, seemed to not even come close to the RE-20 in that respect, i.e., it does have some noticeable proximity effect. It did have higher output, but I thought the 320 also was bright and aggravated some sibilance in my voice - even more than the RE-20. In short, liked the RE-20 a bit better, but not $150+ better, and I kept neither.
Any chance of a review of the Shure Beta 57A and 58A? They're billed as studio dynamic mics, but a lot cheaper than the above and the SM7B. Checked your poll on the geek rising website but can't see them on there. Thanks in advance!
News flash: They make a black version which makes the color argument totally pointless! If you are like me and prefer mics to be black, they do make a black RE20.
Hey quick question. If I use a Focusrite Scarlett 212 with a cloud lifter in between for my re20 microphone, will that work? It's to record audio books professionally in my home made studio? Thanks x
I just bought Yamaha MG10xu,writing down each knobs settings is a must because it will over gain if i dont.but after i did that.i start off with those settings to make sure i didn't re adjust because of the last song needs.yes get it.it has phantom power so hoping that might be enough so i don't need to buy cloud lifter for this
Hello sir, m from india. Please suggest me a collar mic which i should use for making vines and outdoor videos for clear quality and which pick good acoustic guitar sounds too. 😊
I just purchased the Rode Procaster to start podcasting after watching a bunch of your videos. I have a scarlet solo and a cloudlifter also. After recording I like the sound but I thinking for what I paid should I just return it and get the Re20 ?
Bro I'm dumb when it comes to mics and shit I need a good affordable mic for rapping and recording acoustic guitar, I used to have a blue yeti and it's crisp as hell but bulky AF... what do you recommend in the $50 range? and if it's the BM800 what's the cheapest thing to provide phantom power? I also checked the snowball but I feel like it's not that good but idk
Podcastage hmm, is there another option? like a plug and play mic that doesn't need any power? cause I looked up those audio interfaces and I think either one with the BM800 would cost nearly the same as a standalone mic, but the latter might be a wiser option and better in quality. What do you think?
Night Hawk You're looking at the difference between xlr and usb mics. I assume since you want something more compact than the yeti with no strings attached you wouldn't want an xlr mic, which requires a more extensive setup, which is more difficult to achieve anyways with a 50$ price range. Under 50$, you can't get much better than the yeti, which costs about 100$ anyways, but if you want a cheap, in the ballpark of 50$ compact usb mic that sounds pretty great and you can carry around, I'd consider looking at the Samson Meteor, which is pretty small and one of the best USB mics you can get in its' price range. Samson makes great budget mics.
How come your noise floor is so low, if I put my RME Fireface UCX at 60db gain I get a noise floor of about -58db on the meters. Is this considered high? In your video it sounds much lower. Do you happen to know why this could be, I have been searching far and wide. I also have a fethead and with that my noisefloor is the exact same, I put my gain at about 35db. Is this normal or do I have a noise issue somewhere? I must say I usually try to go for about -6 in the peaks when I record. Thanks a lot for your help if you find the time!
Are you an extremely quiet speaker or do you have the mic far away? The re20 has a sensitivity of around -56db or something, so if you were giving it +60db you’d be somewhere in clipping. So either you’re a very quiet talker or you have the mic far away.
Podcastage I'm right up on the microphone when I talk. You were about 80% up on the preamp and in the video there is barely any noise even when I turn up the volume a lot. I wonder if there is any kind of noise reduction applied, since it seems unlikely to me that the 2i2 has less noisy preamps than the RME, but I could be wrong. What is an acceptable noise floor generally? Thanks for your response!
I can assure you there is no noise removal processing. It is raw audio recorded, synced to the video, then I edit the video, and upload it. Something seems wrong in your chain if you’re needing to add 60dB of gain when you’re right on top of the mic. Are you measuring your noise floor before adding any processing? I have not really done any A/B comparisons of noise floors with mics to determine what i find to be an absolute acceptable level, so I do not have a set number here.
@@Podcastage That's so weird, so it seems like a normal result that I am getting. I am measuring before any kind of effects. When I process it the noise becomes even more apparent of course. Maybe it's just me that's the problem :) Thanks for your effort and loving the channel.
