664 sounds almost perfect as a tom mic. Overall, the 666 are my favorites. Very versatile, and always pretty smooth and unobtrusive on any source. The RE-15 were nice too. I’m almost always impressed by these vintage EV mics.
@@countryskystudio I have one too, and it's a brilliant mic that can also double as a self defense weapon. 🤣 And unlike the ND series, which is made in China, the 635/A is still made in the U.S.A. 🇺🇸
RE-15. I've loved mine for 30 years. Got turned onto them from another Nashville engineer at the time. With a great pre, they are the best mic to use on a whole session - surprisingly good mic on any source - and very forgiving with that variable D.
I have most of these and have loved them for years. I was inspired by learning about the mics used at Chess Records. The 666 is my favorite mic for kick drums. 635as are criminally underrated, some days I could use them on everything.

Useful. I don't know if I missed it, but what pre are you using? and are there any other elements in the signal chain? just picked up a slew of these olf EV mics, so this is super useful to me. cheers.
Hi really love the sound of the RE-15 on guitar 😊 was wondering if you could answer a few questions though? Firstly the mic looks like it is pointed directly at the sound hole in the video? If it is, is this something you have found works well for this mic? And also would you describe the guitar you recorded as having a brighter or darker sound naturally? As I know know different mics will work better for certain styles of guitar woods and builds etc… and lastly was it the AEA TRP mic pre I can see in the background that you used or something else? Sorry for all the questions 😅 but any insight would be greatly appreciated 🙂
What did you use as a kick mic and overheads here? I liked the RE-15 for all guitars most. Such a even and ready sound. For toms I really liked the 664. They had a good but natural attack and just enough body but propably no need to cut lows or do a lot of eq'ing.
There's a link for a free file of a 3D printed adapter for the 664 in MEI Studio's review of the 664 ruclips.net/video/YIR3obUv0X0/видео.htmlsi=gvrKIhhHS6ze78Qd&t=399
I have at least one or more of every one of these mics plus a few other weird EV's like RE50, RE20, etc... I've always liked the 664 over the 666. People just want the 666 cause of the devil. I love my 635a's too for under snare, guitar cabs, sometimes a trashy overhead on a kit or cock mic. They sound great totally smashed by a compressor. I also have a 674 that is a great vocal and guitar mic. RE15 are cool but i cannot figure out the price lately, $350-$450 is insane. I have 3 and didn't pay over $50 for any of them. Suddenly they are through the roof. I'm sure someone said Nirvana used them or some such trash and it is driving up the price. EV mics are such strange beasts, never the obvious choice but often surprising.

Really loved the 664 actually! I've got an RE-10 that I really enjoy on vocals and acoustic!
I loved the 635a and RE-15 the most. Actually just picked up a 635 recently so I’m stoked to try it out myself!
I also just purchased a 635a - what a little hidden gem this mic appears to be!

Cool shootout! I have the Omni and the 664
664 killed it on the Toms, amazing sound. Every other application was too thin for me unless you are going for that sound.
NICE
I love these old E-V mics. I happen to own some of their newer ND mics, and a 635A.
This was a great demo. Well done.

Nice the rig at background :-)
I'm amazed at how much more open the 664 sounds compared the 666. In this setting it sounds like a condenser.
Think you could get a less boomy sound with a different placement on the accousit guitar.
HI! where did you find the EV 664 connection cable?
Thanks for the video, great demo
Thank you. Nice and informative
i use 635a all the time but usually on isolated tracking because the omni thing can be a bit of a stress
666 just has something on the acoustic that the rest don't have, maybe less low, or just flatter/crisper highs?

The 635A is a nice room mic.

That snare sounds great. What’s the signal chain? What kind of snare also
Love the champagne sparkle Ludwigs
Acoustic- 664 , electric - re15, 666 close second
How / what cables do you use to convert these mic’s to XLR? I have a few EV mic’s but need an appropriate adapter
Send me an email!!
Sure, what’s your email?

Does anybody know where to get a cable or connector or adapter to turn it into an XLR for the EV 664?
