Hi guys. I have two of this Electro-voice for over 20 years. The big different to other microphones are that this mic almost never make feedback. Best live mic ever! :D
Elvis' favourite microphone was the Electro Voice RE-15. This one was the best capable to capture Elvis voice. Elvis started to use this mike during the 1968 Comeback Special and kept using it until the end of the 1973 Jan/Feb Las Vegas engagement. During his 1969 season and during the September and November tours of 1970 Elvis' sound engineer Bill Porter experimented with other mike's but he always returned to the RE-15. In 1971 Elvis also used the RE-16 which has the same quality as the RE-15 but it has a build-in wind screen. Pictures of the RE-16 can be seen on the album sleeves of "Elvis-Now" and "He Touched Me". By 1972 a dark grey foam wind screen was attached to Elvis' RE-15 (with the exception of Buffalo). can you do a review on this puppy appreciated if a link were to purchase
You've out-themed yourself, Bandrew! The RE-16 was a popular on-air mic at radio stations in the 1970s, especially at AM stations, but by the 1980s, radio had moved on to the wider frequency response of the RE-20. Nowadays, Electro-Voice primarily promotes the RE-16 as a podium mic for PA systems.
This mic was ubiquitous in live vocal performance in the 60s-70s, particularly in USA. It was insanely expensive at that time, like Neumann expensive, and the Variable D tech unique to EV was a big part of the reason for its popularity in high end TV and stage vocal use. Mixing consoles were often only a fader during much of that time so proximity effect was a major issue. This mic could provide a very consistent and great sounding result with almost no effort. Hard to believe, but the Shure Unidyne was almost nonexistent by comparison. I was very fond of the DS35, which was an affordable version of the RE15, the non vari-D partner to the RE16. The DS35 sounds great on a wide variety of vocalists, has great feedback rejection, and is small and unobtrusive, hiding little of that star’s pretty face. If you ever see one on a stand in front of you, try it before laughing. You might find your new fave. All of my EV mics were purchased new in 1977 and still work like champs.
The EV RE16 is a vintage mic that is fantastic on many things including amps in studio settings. It has the ability to pick up what it is actually mic- ing while actually ignoring other things that could be going on around it. It is a great mic when recording more than one instrument in a studio. or (performing live). This is why people pay $300-$400 for them still. Frankly, your test really only handled live situations but did not consider other sources being kept out of it enough. This is why the proximity effect that you talked about is so important. Of course, it is also a great field mic for voice too in interview situations. The RE20 is a different thing altogether. This is mainly bought by studios these days for it's vintage qualities and it's ability to mic amps and eliminate other sources around it. For this, and these people who work in studios it is incredibly valuable.
I think this mic works better on a stand than handheld. very good for percussion like mounted toms and congas. I have a pair or three of them and they can be found for significantly less than map. Definitely old school, like Sennheiser md 421's, and both are great mics. That said, newer mics offer a lot for the money, but if you need a niche mic that does great avoiding cymbal wash on a kit, these are very good.
This is awesome insight! Thanks so much for sharing how you use them in real world applications. I don’t have studio experience with all the mics I review so it’s amazing hearing how people have used them. Thank you so much for sharing.
Hmm. I first watched this video in Firefox and was bothered by the distortion (clipping?). Since none of the comments talked about it, I figured I would play around with my setup a bit to see if I was the problem. Well, after changing audio interface and a few other routing arrangements with minimal changes in sound, I tried playing it in Chrome. It seems (and I say that carefully because we humans are so easily tricked) that the distortion sound is exaggerated a little bit in Firefox vs Chrome, at least on Linux Mint. It still seems to me that there is something distorting more than it should in this video.
I have an EV 10. It ROCKS. YOU want a cheap Chinese mic that picks EVERYTHING UP...and especially the high frequencies. If you’re paying 400 bucks for an EV anywhere, you’re paying too much. Go to eBay and scrounge for any thing other than an EV 15 to save money.and get rid of that high end fuzzy fuzz that you’ve thought was normal since you first plugged a Shure 57 in.
Brownie_ I preordered it...but yeah, I didn’t get any demo units or review units so I won’t have my hands on it until around the end of December probably.
@@Podcastage amazing.. i really use yout reviews to base buying my gear on.. i bought the rode AI-1 based on your review and love it.. i hope whem you get the goxlr you go real indepth with it on how they claim how easy it makes dual pc streaming and how good the midas preamps are and if it really has a cloud lifter to be able to run the shure SM7B
WAIT! THEY SAY IT HAS A CLOUDLIFTER!? I DIDN'T EVEN RESEARCH IT BEFORE ORDERING IT! I just saw the hype and knew I had to try it and see if it's any good.
@@Podcastage yep they claim you can run the Shure SM7B without cl-cloudlifter.. just would like to see your testing and see what kind of noise floor it has without and with the lifter.. that is a huge statement to say you do not need the lifter..
I have 2 EV RE-55 in Super Super looking and working condition. The asking price is 600.00 for the pair. lm also looking for a reputable eBay seller to move these mic's for me... Someone mention to me my local area pawn shop might have a eBay shop..Is that worth checking into ???
I think they all look pretty cool and interesting. I've heard people complain about the pl mics, and they're not far off from the color of vintage Neumanns.
I’m so happy with how the thumbnail came out! It’s awesome to see my work on one of my favorite RUclips Channels!
This channel just keeps getting better
Who's this new host of podcastage? She's kinda hot..

My favorite RUclipsr right here. Direct. Informative. Entertaining. Keep up the good work, my dude!
Zackery Western that means a lot Zackery. Really appreciate that!

I really like this mic. Sounds great.
Sneaking up that production value. Noice!
This guy is amazing. Entertaining and gives me all the information I need
did anyone catch the specified color of the mic under 'finish' on the spec sheet? 'Fawn Beige' That makes it all even better.

The thumbnail looks dope
I like the 90 degree off-axis colouration because it sounds like telephony or some announcement in malls
I don't want to overload my senses so this first watch thru, it's muted. I think this was a wise decision.
Sound Speeds you can’t handle my raw sexuality.
@@Podcastage Please don't use the words "raw" and "sexuality" in the same sentence again ESPECIALLY back to back.
Not sure about the review but I have to say that the hairpiece becomes you! :)
Electro-Voice RE-15 mic whats about this puppy have you a review on this ?
What is the difference between sm58 and Electrovice 16? Which is better more flat sound for male vocals?
Nice wig, man! Thank you
oh my god, I love the sound of that mic. yes, you would be correct, I'm not the biggest fan of bright mics.
Samuel L Jackson also uses the RE16 in Spike Lee's film "Do The Right Thing"
I’m glad I didn’t know that because I think dressing in a costume as Samuel l Jackson could prove problematic for a white guy. Ha.

1:38 Why does that XLR port look like it's full of melted chocolate gunk?

Sounds great
Me in the beginning: Bandrew are you okay?
Me at 0:25 : Oh, you dressed as a female. 😐
Sir..
In under 100$ Mxl 770 microphone is good or not.
Yes
I have one, and it seems pretty good for $75.
Funny Bandrew as always!!!!
“...it had a bit of a fat bottom like all those girls that Freddie Mercury loved.”
QUALITY LINE.
It looks like the microphone Sonny and Cher used to use in their TV shows.
Larry Russell and the hair Sonny used in the show.
Hi!!!!! Brazil!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏
"There's fog rolling in, the dead pirates want their gold, cause he stole it from the men, who stole it from the world." ----->>Legit.
And Focousrite Scarlett solo or PreSonus audiobox 96.
New intro, I see
The song had a very realistic folk sound.
i think this guy have a great haircut
I agree. Whoever this Stevie Wayne guy is, he's got a good looking haircut.
I dunno, I think I'd keep that music from now on...
Wowowowo nice
I love this vintage tone but i don’t think it’s will be nice for everyone
Lol well done sir
Banging on a keyboard with cherry Mc blues
It was fine for Elvis Presley !!!
Wish I had that hair :-)
How the hell mics get so expensive
Nice Thumb
Ahoy!
"Very bulbous" ;)
You talking about my butt or the microphone. Boom. Self roast.
Lol why did I laugh at that
Because you're good people and you love great comedy. I'm clearly a comedic genius.
What the flip
I'm not all that sure that Freddie loved any kind of girl bottoms.
Pentti Hilkuri but those fat bottomed girls made the rocking world go round.
Well, that they certainly did.
Why are these microphones so HIDEOUSLY EXPENSIVE!!!
EV makes great mics that look awful.
lol I feel like I'm the only person in the world who thinks grayish-green is a nice color.
I love the colour!
I think they all look pretty cool and interesting. I've heard people complain about the pl mics, and they're not far off from the color of vintage Neumanns.
Your cross-dressing or cosplaying makes you look like a handsome man instead.
