That 1% is 99% important though.
I love Dread Templar, but bosses that have me running around in circles trying to get in enough shots before dying are my bane. I can't keep up that kind of play for long and eventually start punching the boss with my face. It's annoying to have a game that I find just right but have bosses that force me to turn down the difficulty. I would rather have no bosses at all than have to restart the game on an easier level.

I played this game back then when it was a pre alpha called hell hunt, i wouldnt say it had 1997 graphics id say its 1999 or 2001 graphics, turns out they downgraded the graphics and made them uglier for the full release.
I actually liked episode 1 in Dusk. It's not the greatest but it was fun.
Yeah I kinda prefer its less 'empty' feeling I get from later levels, that are very flat

Let's face it, most of the "retro" shooters are trash, not a single one can even come 10% close to Quake 1.
@@attractivegd9531 not really. Ion Fury and Dusk and Amid Evil are really great.
@@morkgin2459 Ion Fury: uses a fork of eDuke32, has bad mouse input and limited Y axis viewpoint, promised coop and never delivered.
Dusk: too easy, too short, too few monster variety, bad movements failing to emulate some form of vq3'ish moevements, promised coop and never delivered.
Amid Evil, enemies drawn by a 3yo, empty maps with terrible game flow, forgetable weapons with the exception of the planet launcher which is just a rebranded RL, well at least it was "featuring" rocket jumps.
Great review! I do wish I could have done more with the music, episode 5 was very fun to score! We even bounced around the idea of doing ambient tracks between more intense tracks.
I would have loooooved ambient moments it would have gone a long way. But still the soundtrack has some great songs.

I loved this when I played it a year ago, good gameplay, little bit of repetitive maps and annoying exact same music, but still fun nonetheless. Now it looks way better, hyped to check it out again
This looks really fun! Still blown away that Amid Evil hasn’t been discussed on this channel. It’s easily my favorite FPS of all-time. I hope it gets some love here soon.
Yes, Amid Evil! Weapons, environments, level design, enemy variety, combat, visual effects, movement, performance, sounds, music, just to name a few, are all excellent.

The only thing that I didn't like about Amid Evil was that the map difficulty progression goes something like "easy, easy, easy, HARD, HARD, HARD".

@btchiaintkidding7837 he doesn't hate Ultrakill tho, the community blew it way out of proportion and he eventually made it a Meme.
Is he right? Not completely, but he was vindicated with the style meter affecting weapon damage.
I love Ultrakill and that style of game needs to be more common (check out Voidborn and Reaver) but it does have some small flaws that can drive people away. I vastly prefer Turbo Overkill because it's fucking psychopathic what you can do in that game with the weapons. The rocket launcher, shotgun alt-fire and Telefrag rifle alone have made movement insane, then add everything else and you have a game faster than uktrakill and doom eternal when it comes to combat.
Hell, Reaver is Ultrakill but faster, it just lacks weapon synergy.
I love practically all the boomer shooter titles coming out, the only one I think is below an 8-9/10 is Dusk. And thats still a 7
Good you talked about the level design, cause my biggest complaint about alot of bpomershooters is "why pay 10-20$ for something designed worse than the average free megawad"
Luckily most of the new popular ones are designed well or really well depending, save for Amid Evil at times

“ *Make Us Whole Again* “
DUSK Episode 2 was my favourite episode in the game. It had a great setup for a run down industrial complex that gradually become nightmarish and distorted over time. This game looks pretty good too. I like that the graphics of retro games are progressing towards a 6th gen inspired period, or at least pc games from 2000 to 2005. Can't wait for a surge of 6th gen inspired indie games!
My biggest problem was getting stuck running around completed maps as im looking for a 1 ft tall door to an area i missed. A map would really help this game in sections. Also i agree with the earlu game music. Is it bad that your OS is better than most of the sound for the game. Great game, i look forward to next game from dev, i wish they wwould release complete though. The partial game thing was kinda weird but i understand for the little guys ;)

When developing my game, I have been trying to avoid the issue you talked about at the beginning with indie shooters having bad openings, by starting out designing the middle, to completely figure out what the ideal gameplay loop is. Now I am doing the beginning levels, to see how I want to ramp up to the mid levels, then I'll make the last half to test all of the skills from throughout the game.

I don't know if I agree about Dusk's first episode. It's simpler but I think that's not only because of the development cycle, but also it's on a purpose, to escalate the campaign from more grounded, less crazy scenarios to more outlandish. Plus I think that, as Dusk was one of the first retro-style shooters, every episode goes for a vibe from a different classic game - the first one is Blood, the second is Quake 2 and the third one is Quake, adn I think they really accomlish that goal. Plus, Ghost Town is easily one of my favourite levels in the game :)
You really should play Monkey World Hunter: Splash Guardians though. It's really good!

This game is a blast for the price point. Plenty of stuff to bug me a bit. A map per level would be nice given the secret hunting. Death pits in a game not focused on platforming are not great, take some health sure but back to your last save is annoying. I love the bow and revolver and given that I'd like to have a sound indicator for successful headshots. I now have to split my time between this and Dead Space. Valid points, great review.
Looks good. And thankfully it isn't the only retro "boomer" shooter coming out this year. We have at the very least 15 more that look good!

I bought this on the previous Steam Winter sale but I refunded it. I felt that the dash cooldown has a bit too long but what really turned me off was the savepoint system. I wished that there were more savepoints or even checkpoints in-between areas. The combat was a bit hard for me (probably because I was just getting used to it) but I don't like to die then reload on a far away savepoint just to do a long combat section all over again. Maybe I will retry this game again sometime.
If you explore for the secret areas and stuff you'll find lots of upgrades, some for dash. I'd say stick with it. And there wasn't a manual save system? I forget. I thought there was.
@@underthemayo Manual save at the save stations only. I wish they also incorporated a quicksave function at the save stations since you have to click the save menu, then select the save slot everytime you save.
I will add the game on my wishlist again and maybe buy it again on the next sale. The game I am currently hooked on is Sprawl, which I bought on the previous winter sale alongside Dread Templar.
To be fair, Monkey World Hunter: Splash Guardians was pretty good. It had its flaws, but I think it stuck the landing personally. It was a really good installment in the MWH franchise.
I just finished watching a lot of your Resident Evil videos. Have you played Alan Wake? I'm sure you get that question a lot. We seem to have very similar tastes in games and I enjoyed Alan Wake. I'd be interested in seeing a video with your opinions on it.

Under the Mayo should play Devil May Cry 5. I personally loved this game and I think that he would at least appreciate the fast paced gameplay. I would also love to see his opinion on the difficulty and how different characters play.

Seriously doubt the creators of Dusk or Dread Templar or any of these retro shooters "wish" they could go back and change things. Didnt most of these creators come from AAA games like Halo, Doom, etc.? These guys arent new to this and learning along the way.
I liked Dusk ep1 just for the atmosphere. Lost my interest in Dread templar after hour but will do another try

To be fair, a lot of first episodes in 90s shooters like Heretic, Duke 3D, Blood(dare I say it), and Shadow Warrior aren't all that great either. I actually think Dusk's first episode is pretty good and fares better when it comes to the first episode of the above mentioned games.

Early access was kinda meh, but now I want to see if the later chapters are really any better. With a few exceptions, the boomer shooters started getting staller and less creative.

I think that the first level of a game should be the last level to be designed. It should serve as a tutorial in how to play the game that is made after all of the mechanics of the game have been completed.

Was so interested until you said it has no saving at any moment. Fake difficulty at its worst, and how to ruin an otherwise great shooter. It'll stay on the shelf.
Not having the ability to save scum is fake difficulty? That's a weird way to think about it.
Game is pretty mid. It have great movement, annoying, little acceleration on mouse that you can get use to it. You have dash, that is kinda worthless, and you can never use it, except some puzzles. The bullet time is PERFECT. Seriously, I have no idea why so much god damn games slows you too when you use bullet time, I hate that with passion. Not this bullshit here thankfully, you move at exactly same speed and mobility, it's that simple, good someone finally get that right. Enemy design so far is super boring, seriously, on of the worst I saw in a long time in boomer shooter. Great, chunky riffs on soundtrack, super sad it gets older fast, I wish dude could do a little bit more, this type of guitars hit the spot for me. Sound design of guns is fantastic, the only thing I could say negative, is that shotgun could be Aa little louder. Pretty easy and decent upgrade system, love that some weapons change themselves, similar to Forgive me Father (same publisher btw). Satisficing secrets, some of them are really hard to find, I like that. Level design is pretty boring and bland, I'm talking about structure itself, because I really like visuals, heavy Quake 1 inspiration. There's not gonna be anything super crazy in terms of design, you not gonna say "holy shit, this is awesome" like in Dusk in multiple places;.
Overall, it's mid/solid 7/10 game, it's worth getting if you are fan of simple boomer shooters.
