- Watch again as the last portrait Gustav Klimt painted, Dame Mit Facher (Lady With A Fan), went up for auction at Sotheby’s in London.
The artwork, which is expected to sell for up to £65 million, will be offered in the marquee modern and contemporary evening auction on June 27.
Lady With A Fan was created when Klimt was in his artistic prime, and at a moment when the “formality” of his earlier commissioned work gave way to a new expressivity.
The Austrian artist died unexpectedly in 1918 at the age of 55.
He began his work on Lady With A Fan in 1917, by which time he was among the most celebrated portraitists in Europe, receiving commissions at prices far higher than his contemporaries.
However, this was a rare work painted entirely in the pursuit of his own interests and demonstrates a “freedom and spontaneity” that reflects Klimt’s joy in painting, according to experts.
Unlike traditional vertical “portrait” paintings, Lady With A Fan returns to the square format that Klimt used for his avant-garde landscapes earlier in the century, giving this painting a uniquely “modern” edge.

My mind boggles at the thought of having a spare £74 million sitting in the bank for a painting 😮
you know nothing about how auction buying works. no one pays for their painting at the time they pick them up. the buyer pays for the painting over a thirty year period. an art mortgage. if i had been the winning bidder i would be very stupid, with my wealth, if i paid 74 million pounds at the time i took my painting home. my wealth is my wealth. i can and will use it as i see fit for me and my future. that is how wealth and auction buying really works. i have bought paintings at major auctions for over fifteen years. i have resold some in the last fifteen years. all at a huge profit. i hope i have helped you in a small way today.
@@steven1822 that's great info but I'm not sure why you took that as a personal attack. Spend what and how you want. I don't know you. 74 million is still a mind boggling amount to me.
@@lilac9639 no personal attack. just the raw and very honest facts. you can not handle and then eat what in life is the truth.
@@JUANS3F bravo mate.
@@steven1822 like JUANS3F says,...whatever.
It's like some big top circus , a kind of freak show of wealth
The loveliest Klimt ever . It must have been love !💕💝💐
Lust, more like it. Klimt was a total womanizer.
I think her pronunciation of ‘Room’ and ‘Sir’ definitely added a couple of million…
I love Klimt, her dress and her enthusiasm.
I love how your out fit contracts with the back round.
I’m here for the art, not the service people taking orders on the phone. Have the cameras linger on the art.
Starts at 3 million! Holy moly!
just reading about Klimt -grew up in such poverty, what would he think seeing his work go for millions??
I wish that my art works create history the change the Caribbean perspective on visual arts. I also need my own Art Gallery here in Jamaica.
I find it strange how famous art is so outrageously appreciated and. priced. but unknown but excellent art is ignored and grossly unappreciated
DIONISE THERON STUNNING ART .......................THANK YOU .
Hope my kids don't see this. They might decide I'm worth more dead than alive.
I am wondering what makes a painting so valuable? I thought it might be for the age of the paintings but some of the paintings are not that old.
there is a lot of speculation with no guarantee. The artistic quality of the art is not always a factor in its cash value. Some of this art looks very ordinary to me... if made by a no name artist the same work would be practically worthless.
Tom Edison's bidding is electrifying.
wish my boy lautrec got some more love :(
28:04 Suzume?
1:16:10 the kiddie that did that must be dead chuffed !
You are invited to get inspired, if Gustav Klimt would be alive to see this...huh? Having FAITH and believe in natural gifts, put them artistic skills there on canvas is always worthy, we need to recycle the Belle Epoque spirit friends, once when l was a teenager, Summer holidays were used for enjoying Creative camps projects and ...copy genius artists, put them feelings on canvas and let them shine this good, Klimt is a very good teacher friends
Très bien le théâtre de la vendeuse mais voir les tableaux serait mieux !
Wish I Had Some Paintings For Sale!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I cant imagine having 3 million pounds in pocket change in the bank.
Bless me for my success 🌱🙏🇮🇳
Dreaming of the day when it will be requested the ...buyer's honesty of his fair profits, who has such figures to spend? A Ghana diamonds smuggler, those who traffic guns on the black market, let's skip narcos dealers and dirty money laundry, slaves owners in Sudan, mining companies, yeah, what a wonderful world this could be friends, think about it
These millionaires should better help some young talented artists who are struggling. They could surprise themselves with the number of artists who are as talented as Klimt and will never rise to the top.
the artist will in their own way and time. have endless faith in the real creation of masterpiece art. young artists know they are talented. young artists really know how to get their own visions to the masses. give them time and space to grow as they want to in their own lives. stop telling millionaires what to spend their hard earned money on. do you understand the words freedom and free will. i do.
@@steven1822 go take a cold shower and chill.
They are helping the art world have immense value and intrigue, thereby keeping a culture of artistic demand, expectation and purpose. Not everyone makes it and artists have to learn that like everyone else. I would say, while this level of money is pretty ridiculous, they are preserving heritage and the art world for many future artists. You could even argue that this sort of thing is the greatest of help to artists and the art world...
I am sure is a copy sold as original !!!
I bid five bucks.
going going .... gone
$40 to paint the picture.
Sold for $600 billion dollars.
Logic.
The one that trully invented capitalism , the owner of the Ford company a century ago said, workers are our customers and partners in business. Wish you find out, multi billionaire companies such as Huawei or Samsung, do they share at least ten percent of their profits with employees every end of the year like Ford used to do? At least for having the mood for exploring fine arts, for buying paintings or visit Museums in London or ...having a fine arts business next, no huh?
They add £100,000 each biding like us ordinary adding a pound 😮, all money for those scratches 😂😂, elegant way of begging for millions 😮😮
half of them look or seem fake .. too genuine ..
All about $$$.
she hardly stopped for breath - should have at least had a glass of bubbles to celebrate
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Why 😂😂😂😂😂
I glad I am not millonaire to spend the money stupidly buying those chiken scratch drawings .lol
The guy chewing bubble gum LOL Must be a Yank
The art world makes me sick - full of greedy self important people.
She he him speaks loudly.
E money to me, I'm without 1 euro and I'm the incarnation of DA Vincyi and fully enlightened being,
Meh. Much ado about nothing.
the first portrait is .. painted in the 1990s .. for sure .. too modern even in colour
It's at time like this you wonder where Just Stop Oil are when you need them
It's difficult to get into an auction at Sotheby's. It's easier to vandalize a worth once it's on display in a public venue.
This is not very interesting, the auctioneer is center of attention, self promoting…not needed. Would rather see art.
Some of these are ridiculous. Scribbles and some scratches.
Is that what you learn in the art world? To chew bubble gum? And rechewing the same views?
What a waste of money! When they can feed the hungry kids around the world 😢
Stuff the hungry kids , why the hell cant people be allowed to spend the money they have on what they want ... I suppose you walk around with a £1000 mobile instead of donating that entire amount to some charity.... why is it you get to decide what you do with your money ??
Once your fortune will turn around and you will be bagging for help and someone will tell you: stuff yourself.
Wrangons... you tidssone tiresome try to triggers me to wrathis
The most overrated artist in the world? Well, there are a few other contenders. He's a lightweight, though yes, his work is often beautiful, if sentimental, sometimes twee - his erotic drawings are probably the best of him. But oh my, isn't the capitalist art market a grotesque mockery of everything good about humanity and art.
The Lady with the fan, she must feel the Hot and estr fanning now. 😊
