One of the simple and driving bass lines I love is Golden Earring's Radar Love. Can't listen to it while driving; I'll get a speeding violation. Queen's Under Pressure. The way Freddie and David sing over it is to savour a great performance. Rush's Geddy Lee playing La Villa Strangiato comes to mind, too. Last one is Chris Squire's Roundabout from Yes. So many great songs from back when, eh?
Well done John! Another Jam/Bruce Foxton bass line ‘Down in the Tube Station at Midnight’ anything (everything) with James Jamerson on bass, Chris Squire on Heart of the Sunrise, Wilton Felder on Jackson Five’s I Want You Back…
A welcome Top 5. A couple of honourable mentions, in my opinion. David Hungate for the bass line on "You're The One That I Want." The late great Herbie Flowers for "Rock On" by David Essex. Both songs are all about the bass.
A bass line that always gets me listening is a Disco/Dance tune called "You got the Love" By The Source ft. Candy Stanton, Erin's remix. It's in drop D if you're interested.
Keep Us On The Road - Motorhead, Apostrophe -Frank Zappa ( with Jack Bruce ) The Real Me - The Who, Starless - King Crimson, YYZ - Rush, Emerald - Thin Lizzy. Some of my favourite bass lines 🤘😁
For Whom the Bell Tolls - Cliff Burton (Metallica) She Bangs the Drums - Mani (Stone Roses) Sweet Child 'O Mine - Duff McKagan Give it Away - Flea (RHCP) Come Together - McCartney (Beatles)
Just off the top of my head Hit me with your Rhythm Stick - Norman Watt-Roy Roundabout - Chris Squire Good Times - Bernard Edwards Wherever I lay my hat - Pino Palladino Peaches - JJ Burnell
John, great choices there. I do concur sir with you saying it’s a Paul bass line. I was Paul playing a jazz bass with pick-up covers and George being George told Paul nothing to fancy keep it simple and at that particular time within the relationships Paul thought “aye right son, it’s getting this”. George was always bemoaning his songs never get enough attention or finesse. True Story 👍🏻
my top 5 bass lines, Fleetwood Mac The Chain, Pink Floyd One of these days, Marillion Kayleigh, Deep purple Child In time, Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells(a wrist breaking bass album).
“Walk On The Wild Side” - Herbie Flowers (RIP) - with electric bass overdubbed with upright bass. “Signed, Sealed Delivered” - Bob Babbit (RIP) “Wheels Of Fortune”/ “For Someone Special” - Tiran Porter of The Doobie Brothers “Out Of The Blue” - John Wetton (RIP) during his tenure with Roxy Music “Bad Motor Scooter” - Bill Church (Montrose).
John Paul Jones - Dazed And Confused (Zeppelin) Jaco Pastorius - Black Crow (Joni Mitchell) Chris Squire - Roundabout (Yes) Geddy Lee - Tom Sawyer (Rush) Tony Levin - Discipline (King Crimson)
Nice list but moving on here's an idea for another top 5. The Top 5 'guitars that got away'. By that I mean the guitars we always wanted but never managed to own. The idea for this came to me whilst looking at 70s era Yamaha SG2000s on Reverb and realising that after spending most of my life wanting one they were probably now unaffordable.
What's the Animals song??..." In the dirty old part of the City" ....boom boom boom.... that's a memorable bass line for me, that really drives that song both the intro and the chorus parts
Couple of new wave classics : hit me with your rhythm stick and pump it up
My #1 has to be Jack Bruce’s intro to Cream’s “Badge” - not flashy but sets up the Clapton-Harrison composition perfectly

You are not wrong John. Oh what a night is a fantastic bass line. it's the introduction of it in the song that takes me away.
The singing drummer on “December 63”is Gerry Polci.
As a bass player of almost 50 years, I agree with all of your nominations.
I also think Colin H is fantastic.
Nothing from Norman Watt-Roy or Gerry McAvoy?

@@sparpant Thanks for jogging a failing memory
"The Night" by the Four Season rather than that other one
What no Norman Watt Roy? Shame on you John you deserve a thwack with a rhythm stick!!
While my Guitar Gently Weeps is not by Lennon/McCartney. It's by George Harrison.
My mistake. Thanks for pointing it out 👍
