Metal Sonic SPURNED the chance Sonic offered him, so Sonic wasn't able to GIVE it to him. Then, by letting him get away, Sonic TOOK a chance; and the world payed the price! If the Second half of your statement was true; then his confidence in the Overpowered Arc wouldn't have EVAPORATED when he found out that Starline, whom he told Surge he WOULD OFFER a chance, WEAPONIZED Surge and Kit. He felt GUILTY! He felt even MORE guilty when he realized that Eggman, in regard to Starline, the ONLY person in the WORLD who EVER looked up to him, only cared about "proving" he's smarter than Starline! Furthermore, even if we assume Sonic WASN'T ever overly lenient, WHICH HE WAS, that would still mean that Sonic was BRUTAL in Issue 61. He threw Metal Sonic into Omega's line of fire and he LET Shadow TRY to kill Eggman! In other words, you CAN'T say that Sonic HASN'T changed!
@@videogollumer- blowing up Eggman is no different from any other times Sonic has blown Eggman up! If it was a chaos sphere to the skull or Shadow crushing his head then I’d believe and even then Sonic stated afterwards that him and Metal would meet again. Mecha Sonic renewed Sonic philosophy because he was getting sick and tired that villains constantly saying they can’t change. Even then after the idw we get to frontiers where a change in Eggman came to his life. Also on a different topic how do you think Eggman both past and present would react if they got to a chance to see both his grandfather and Maria during shadow generation.

Shadow TRAPPED Eggman in the tower KNOWING it would blow up; and Sonic refused Eggman's "you need me" plea NOT because he DIDN'T believe Eggman's claim the city would blow up, but because he knew Eggman was just trying to make an excuse for Sonic to save him. Sonic has faith in his friends; he didn't NEED Eggman to stop resolve the explosion, and he knew it. Sonic was done trying to rehabilitate Eggman, who didn't want to be rehabilitated in the first place, and didn't care that Shadow was trying to kill him. As for Metal Sonic, that's because Eggman would rebuild him. It really doesn't matter. The point is that he is taking them with the level seriousness that he NEEDS to, a level of seriousness that dropped significantly after listening to Elder Scruffy's advice about ignoring unrepentant atrocities and that he steadily started to regain after finding out the truth about Surge and Kit. He'll never again extend the hand of mercy to Eggman or Metal Sonic unless they sincerely wish to repent, and that will NEVER happen! Sonic knows it; Eggman knows it; Metal Sonic knows it; everyone in-universe and IRL knows it! Also, you keep assuming this all takes place BETWEEN Forces and Frontiers? You don't know that. For all you know, different parts could have happened before and after; for all any of us knows, Sega may end up retracting their pretty ridiculous insistence that the comics and the games are one. Ian Flynn wrote Eggman in IDW as he wrote him in Archie as a suicidally evil monster; that Eggman does NOT belong in the games. Mecha Sonic did NOT change Sonic's mind about Eggman and Metal Sonic; he still knows, for a fact, that they are both rotten pieces of garbage! Oh, Maria? You mean little Ivo's cousin who meant everything to their grandfather while little Ivo himself apparently meant NOTHING to him?! Yeah... I think Eggman would have had some choice words for both of them; and if Gerald would have apologized to him like he did with Shadow, I don't think Eggman would be even REMOTELY as forgiving as Shadow.

YES this entire series takes between Forces and Frontiers because the first issue stated it was 6 months after forces Idw Eggman is the same as Game Eggman Archie Eggman is the only version of Eggman besides fleet that can be a absolute monster and Flynn literally wrote his version in Fronteir so that’s the Eggman you will get as he continues to write for the team. Or Eggman will have a nice conversation with Maria to get to know her and understand why they loved her. Heck he wonders if Maria was like Sage in some way understanding her Grandfather feelings but this is before the events but Eggman shows to be like his Grandfather in a lot of ways.
Hey, Not sure you know this, but the kindle version of issue 75 has moved it's release date to December 18th while stuff like the Sonic wiki zone still says it'll come out on the 11th, care to explain why Kindle does that?
