Love MAF! Only critique is the seemingly dogmatic approach to base-building and completely ignoring higher intensity; I completely agree that base-building for as long as possible before entering a sport- or race-specific block is of utmost importance, however if you don’t utilize the anaerobic system, it WILL de-train over that time. I know there are many studies that show it takes a long time to “lose” fitness gains, but there is absolutely no harm in training anaerobically 1x per week during base-building just to maintain that fitness.

ABSOLUTELY. Every interview or video with Maffetone preaches 180-age like it's gospel. 180-age is JUST AS ARBITRARY as 220-your age. Karvonen is the best method, NOT Maffetone.

I did MAF for 3 months, and while it lowered my HR and improved my lung function so I no longer need my inhaler during/ after runs... it added 2 minutes per mile and trashed my form! I now make sure to do strides at least once per week.

I got my first Polar heart rate monitor in 1985 or 1986.

...."they sprint for some cover...." Yes but....how fast and for how long before they're puffed ?! Our anaerobic fitness relies on fast-twitch muscles and these decline over time, if not trained and maintained. Beyond the acquisition of a strong aerobic base, in my view, the 80-20% regime is ideal for endurance running.
I appreciate his logic but, at times, his biases border on dogma and neglect nuance!
Just discovered your channel. Cheers from Melbourne!

I agree with the theory of running slow to get fast however the MAF heart rate formula makes no sense whatsoever. I have a low max heart rate so MAF formula puts me in at a high tempo HR. Completely bogus.
