How to get audio out of a BBC Micro

- In this video I install a brilliant mod from @trickysoft which bypasses the Beeb's internal speaker and outputs audio to a 3.5mm audio socket. You can then use this to connect headphones, an external speaker or any other kind of audio out device with a 3.5mm jack! Big thanks to tricky for providing me with this mod, it is very easy to fit and it works perfectly. Enjoy!

Glad it is working fine for you.
For the more techie watchers, there is an audio line out available on the BBC's board, but then it wouldn't cut the speaker of. I set my volume on the board so that the output is line level and got a 10k resistor in line in the scart plug.
I'll put some pictures on *. of how I fit them, which is either hot glued in the slot or in the reset out composite holes with the washer.
That's a great mod Richard, and very simple, elegant implementation. Are you by any chance selling these? Is it also compatible with the Master?
P.S. Thanks for the video Colin, more mod videos would be great.
@@DreamsOfWires I usually only sell my bits to people at shows where I can show them it working and have never sold these.
Shows are the reason that I make these as being able to easily adjust the volume as the noise level at a show changes is really handy.
I have one fitted to my master and it works fine, although the master already has an audio out on the back.
They complement the RGB to SCART cable s that I make with an audio jack on them.
I don't sell the SCART cables as they take over an hour to build and you can buy them online for £12 and may £15 with a jack - we'll maybe see when Colin gets his.
These are quite easy to make but still time consuming - still, I might put a couple on *.
@@trickysoft Thanks for replying, I understand the time issue. The main reason for it on my Master would be to disable the internal speaker, which I presumed connecting to the existing audio output wouldn't do, since it looks like a phono connector rather than a jack. The connectors are looking in a poor state on mine anyway, and I think it needs servicing before I can start using the machine properly, aside from a dead key I get a worrying amount of noise from the speaker. I have an RGB to SCART cable already at least.
It's working like a charm, thank you so much! ☺️
@@DreamsOfWires you could just unplug the speaker of you always have a way to use an external one via the phono. I used to slip business cards under the plastic strip and slide them side to side for a limited volume control.
When I did a very similar mod 'back in the day' 3.5mm sockets were still a new standard and I went with the standard of the day 1/4" audio jack. This had the advantage that the sockets came in case mounting varieties that fitted nicely in the unused Econet connector hole in the case with a volume control potentiometer in the adjacent reset button hole.
Excellent! Another way of modding the Beeb without carrying out extensive surgery 😄
Great video of an awesome mod.
Thanks very much - all the credit goes to tricky!
That's really cool. I'd definitely do that to my beeb if I was still using it but it's been retired.
Yes, it's a great mod - good for me and good for the rest of my household 😂
@@ColinHoad Probably said this before but back in the mid 80's I wired car speakers to my Beeb. the sound was ear shattering but glorious! lol (how I didn't damage something, I'll never know. I just connected them to the same speaker output)
Great video Colin. I was hoping to see more of your beeb setup.
Thank you! I'm more than happy to show a bit more of my setup in future if that's of interest 😀
@@ColinHoadI look forward to it.

Thanks for the tip!
I'm struggling to get audio out of this video!
It was a little quite for me for the first part.
Oh dear! I was using my Bluetooth mic but maybe it wasn't picking up very well, sorry about that
