Hey! Great question because there really isn’t a standard when it comes to high vs low speed reels. It’s sort of subjective… I call a low gear anything at or below 5:1.

There are a few variables to consider but for a general bottom fishing rod, to pair with one of these reels, you want something with a backbone ( line rating above #40), 6 to 7' in length, and moderate action. I think the moderate action helps with leverage fighting the fish where a fast action will put move stress on the angler. Under 6' makes it too stiff, over 7' makes it hard to handle on the boat landing the fish. Line rating should line up with the # test line you want to use. hope this helps
