Most folks haven't heard cocaine country and west texas weird, or the wonderfully off-kilter Terry Allen (the Leonard Cohen of texas oil country). He's been toiling in relative obscurity for 50 years, known only to musicians, new wave artists, and a handful of fans. His late career jolt is welcome, but comes far far too late. Hopefully folks will rediscover his early stuff and the rest of his catalogue now, particularly the album where this song is from, "Smokin' the Dummy/Bloodlines" .
I've been a long time fan of Terry Allen, -my favorite song of his aside from this is probably "Truckload of Art". He really captures an authentic West Texas blue collar Country feel AND artistic, bohemian counter culture vibe as one and the same. As the child of working class hippies and working artists from rural blue collar and farming backgrounds, his songs give me great comfort! 👍🌻
I absolutely love this band and was fascinated to read about Terry himself in the article from The New Yorker. I've lived a long time and I don't know how it is that I have not come across him. I'm a fan now that's for sure!!!
Seen Terry live twice-- both times from around 8 feet away.
Goddamned national treasure.
Love everything about this song!
Just lucked out and found this after checking out Austin City Limits…..excellent. My first time hearing this band.
Now listen to the albums “Juarez” and “Lubbock on Everything.”
Will do
Same here took me a minute to find the band name but glad I did!
Terry Allen is incredible! Needs to be much more widely known.
Now this is solid gold
