Our Bedtime Routine

  • Although Bedtime is a daily struggle, we do our best to stick to a schedule that helps us remain calm and understanding.
Mikko has always been able to sleep alone up until she turned 3. We've tried so many things to help her, letting her sleep in our room, one of us sleeping with her, music, soft lighting etc... but it always resulted in her getting up during the night. Most recently we've moved our oldest daughter in with her along with a dedicated routine, and she began to sleep through the night.
Sudden changes like what we have experienced, should be evaluated, because it could indicate another issue.
Training your Autistic child to fall asleep alone should be done gradually over time and while Ma'Kenzie loves to be closer to Mikko, This is not a permanent solution by any means, but it does help until we can find something more fitting for each of us.

It is so good to see dad being fully invested in his family. He is as calm and collected as his wife. I hope they stay that way. They work so well as a team under more difficult circumstances that most families might not have. I can tell Niko is improving a lot. Keep up the good work.

Simple solution to cutting onions: set a cup of water on counter next to the onions. As you cut the onion is attracted to the first source of water..that is why it attacks the eyes first.

What helps me with teary eyes while cutting onions is sticking my tongue out. My sister once told me that the "things" the onion sends out, while we cut it, look for something damp to bind with, that's why the eyes and the nose are the perfect place. But if you stick out your tongue you block the way to the eyes and the onion things that make you cry go onto your tongue instead. Whenever I remember to do it, it helped me, to at least get less teary. Hope this helps you too!

    • @winterdream5710
      @winterdream5710 6 месяцев назад +3

She IS a very smart little girl but intelligence has nothing to do with a different way of processing thought; which is what is happening with her autism. My grandaughter is 4yrs old non-verbal, severe autism and has behavioral issues ONLY because she can't control being autistic; it's NOT acting out. Now, she may grow better at control as she ages but if anyone came up to me talking about "she's actiong out, she knows it", that person will be blessed out because they have no clue what they're talking about.

I was gonna say that! 😊 I also cut the entire onion at once by running it under cold water and store it in the freezer in a ziplocked baggie. When it freezes I partially thaw it out and move it around in the baggie a bit to break it up and put it back. That way I keep fresh chopped onion so I can grab a handful and toss it in any savory dish.

Try pull up diapers so she can start to do it herself and be part of the process. Pull up diapers are a huge help. And FYI there is not a toddler anywhere that doesn’t give problems at bed time. Whether they are special needs or not they never want to go to sleep.
Bake some chicken legs and green beens with olive oil see if she likes that maybe. I had sensory issues with food my entire life. I refuse to eat chicken unless it was striped and white breast and if I see a vein or a piece of fat I would throw up so it was a huge ordeal so maybe she needs her food presented to her in a different way. And I preferred food with certain colors.

Lol I think Mikko gives those sweet lil hugs, bc she sees she don't have to do what she's asked of.
I don't understand why she has an option to try the food... Just bc she didn't like how it looks, she doesn't have to try it?!
What would happen if you just put the spoon in her mouth...
    It won't kill her.
Yes, she's different (as am I but I have O.I.) but she's still a tiny little human.
There's stuff on the market you can put on her thumb to stop her sucking it.... They don't enjoy the taste but they'll stop.
Mikko's poor little mouth is going to need major dental work if she doesn't stop. You already said the dentist said its affecting the shape.
Gentle Parenting is definitely different compared to how I was raised, that's for sure...
I feel they get away with a lot...
Just giving my opinion, I'm not saying it to be smart but I know reading text is hard to take bc you can't hear the person's tone.

I agree with all you said and to me it doesn’t come off wrong or disrespectful. If you leave it up to a kid they wouldn’t want to try anything new especially outside of anything they like, that’s the whole point of not asking a child certain things. I know I didn’t do that with my kids. Kids also do what is allowed and they know how to trick parents too by crying, falling out, whining, and other things. Just look at when it was bedtime look how she tried it and even when her dad came in he was falling for it just a pinch so he let her show then he realized he was fooled and she did that cry fallout thing she does very often (a tantrum) then he said no and put her lil self in the bed. Then what did mom do cut the lights on around the window but sounded like the big girl didn’t want them on but oh well the little one did so she got her way.

Hi, if you cry ever time you chop onions, try this: put one or two matches in your mouth while doing it, with the tip out. It worked for me.

      THIS. SPOT on.
Mom needs to go for a 2 week vacation and let dad straighten her out. She listens to him no problem.
Mikko acts like a 1 year old around her mom, and her mom just lets her get away with everything with those fake tears and fits. You can’t blame “her autism” when it’s her just being spoiled

My foster daughter is autistic and non-verbal. She was diagnosed with a developmental delay and receptive expressive language disorder. She started regular school for 1 term then we pulled her and homeschooling for current term due to her not getting the care I needed her to get.
Since then she's come on so fast. She's also 3y and wasn't potty trained. Since I started homeschooling she's now day and night time potty trained, knows her ABCs (in sign language too), letter sounds, the shapes and colours, can count to 40 plus days of the week, months of the year, vehicles, fruits and vegetables plus some 50 words in ASL.
She's also an audiovisual learner so while we limit screen time, we do lots of charts and songs and she picks up really fast. She still can't speak in sentences unless she's echoing something someone has said but I'm hoping by the time she returns to her bio mom she'll have made more progress so I won't have to worry about her as much.
Wishing Miko all the best 🖤 I love watching her progress too and I've been learning so much from you when it comes to gentle parenting and remaining calm under pressure. Have a 2024 full of meeting and exceeding all goals and expectations for you and yours.

Put a wet paper towel on the cutting board next to where you’re cutting the onions. It absorbs the juices that spray out when you cut it and helps with the crying.

I don't know about Mikko, but it doesn't make a difference if my hair is long or short! It's my scalp that is hurting! Yes Mikko's hair is long and tangled, but in this video not so much. Maybe it is because her hair is moist and the brush is helping from pulling the hair at the scalp. If she cuts her hair the scalp remains and any hair on top whether it be long or short is still going to irritate the scalp if it is tangled! That's been my experience as a tender headed person.
