It's not good enough and it needs to improve, Lando's had 6 seasons now, there's no excuses for me. Leaving the door open for Max in Austria's sprint, unacceptable. The operation side of the team need to improve as well. Canada and Silverstone being key moments, if they pit Oscar when they pit Lando he likely wins provided he still put the mediums on. the problem with being out in front but only by a small margin is that you tend to be very conservative to protect the position which leaves you vulnerable to aggressive strategy behind, and a midfield team that is often used to reacting to the cars around it will find itself caught in the headlights. norris and piastri running 1 and 2 just before the switch to inters was a prime example, and mclaren chose the conservative route to split their strategies

One clear distinction between championship teams and "good" teams is their approach to pit stops. Top teams like Red Bull or Mercedes don't waste time giving their drivers audiobook-style lectures about tires. They either make the decision themselves or pit immediately after the drivers make their choice. And I can’t deny it’s satisfying to see McLaren and Norris struggling with a losing streak despite having the fastest car, especially after they previously downplayed the challenges other drivers face in winning.

that's a bit toxic to say but i agree cuz holy shit all the people all the time are like "oh it's the car it's the car"
it's not just the car. the car is the first step. then you should have a good team and a good driver and good communication to fight for wins. otherwise teams like Merc and RBR are just gonna fist-fuck you the entire time. to me Mclaren and Lando as of now aren't a threatening combination ... sort of how i felt about ferrari in 2022 the team that could actually challenge RBR is Merc ... but they're too far back in terms of point which is a shame.

    • @Metatr0n
      @Metatr0n 26 дней назад +1

I agree there. The McLaren drivers and their mechanics seem to have found a nice sweet spot of set up and adjustments, which shows in constant great performances in qualifying.
But all that performance falls apart the moment they're 1st and completely go "What should we do next?" "I don't know, I've never come this far". Having a debate while racing about what tires should be used is completely unnecessary. If the race engineer realizes that the driver is too overwhelmed to make a sound decision, he should simply decide for himself, based on the information he gathered over the race. Every race engineer communicated in the beginning how shit the softs were and McLaren boasted before the race how they are the only team with a completely fresh set of mediums left. 90% of the entire dry race was done on mediums and the only drawback was the graining at the end of the tires life. That wouldn't have been an issue though, because the set was brand new and it was the last stint, only half of the expected life of the tires. So how do you get in a situation where you ask "Who should we cover with the tires?" instead of simply doing what not other team can do and put the best choice of tires on, no matter who's in front or behind? Oscar showed how capable the new mediums were by jumping several positions, those tires on Lando could have easily meant 1st place as Hamilton was struggling on the softs as expected, so that should have been a possible overtake and Verstappen would have been behind Hamilton without a chance to get into strike distance.

But for McLaren to boast before the race about how they're the only team with a brand new set of mediums, seeing how well the mediums worked 90% of the dry race and then opting for softs was just a 30 IQ move...

I like Lando but at the moment he seems to be lacking the ruthlessness and raw speed of Lewis, Max, George, Charles and Oscar (and Fernando in his prime).
Norris is a very good driver but I think there’s something extra elite/special of the other drivers in his generation (Max, George, Charles & Oscar) have that Norris doesn’t have yet.
That’s not to say he can’t be a great driver the future, I think he can potentially be a champion in the future. But I haven’t seen it yet.
I hope he can prove me wrong but I feel like if you put George or Charles especially in a car equal to the Red Bull or a car as consistently good as the McLaren, they’d have more than one win this season already.

Extremely unfair to say Lando is lacking raw speed. He has the 2nd best average qualifying position this year behind Max (3.75) significantly ahead of those you mention - Lewis (7.75), George (5.08), Charles (5.25) and Oscar (5.50).
Secondly, assuming the same strategic errors on the team's side in Canada and Silverstone, there's absolutely nothing to suggest that George or Charles would have more. Those two drivers have their own history of making errors at the front of the field, and they both have had longer time running at the front than Lando has.

@@brandonhollis9882 Because he’s had the better car. I mean, George has been on pole twice in the last four races. And the McLaren has been a better car. And Charles, he has so many pole positions. So no, Norris isn’t a better qualifier than either George or Charles. The fact is that George and Charles are way better at getting a fast lap out of a car. That’s just a fact.
And there absolutely is, as George has way less race win opportunities than Norris and has won more races. And that’s a fact. And Charles has won more races too. All with a car that was never as consistently quick as the McLaren is.
And that final point is a flat out lie. Especially in George’s case. Norris has had way more front running experience than George. Charles, maybe overall, but not recently no.
Norris is the one in second because he’s had the consistently better car.

Lando has had basically a year (from mid-2023) of competing in a car that's a top 3 caliber car consistently (you could maybe say part of 2020 since they ended up 3rd in the championship but that was sort of down to Racing Point's penalty and Ferrari's engine issue); George (2022, 2023, and 1/4 of 2024) and Charles (2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 1/2 of 2024) longer. Stella also a very new team principal, he jumped in 2023, although he was manage to make a huge revolution in McLaren technically, he still lacks of killer mentality as other TP like Toto, Horner or even Fred to make McLaren instantly challenge RBR for win, and that is okay because this will make Stella learn.
about Lando, i don't worry at all with him because he has that raw speed to be a race winner or to challenge the likes of Max, Lewis or Charles as he has been proven it this year, just missed out an opportunity to put it together not on pace, but on a situation being lacked like racecraft or small mistakes like race start which for me it can be solved along with the experience that Lando will getting this year in case for 2025 war. When you have the raw speed, don't be worry because you have that kind of pace advantage for fighting for win or a championships.
Right now, it's not about Stella under deliver to make a bad car, or Lando under deliver or didn't have the speed, it is all pure based on experience that both Lando and McLaren didn't have yet as they will take this 2024 as a huge learning curve before jumping in 2025 & start ready to war against Max.

The cruel thing is they are my favs in F1 and MotoGP so every time I see a fucked up quality/penalty Im like "here we go again"... but is worth remembering that Piastri has a season and a half only in F1, which is mad, we sometimes tend to forget that.

I think they'll get there. I doubt there are many, if any people left from the championship winning days of McLaren, at least in the strategy department (if they have one!). Over this season we should see improving decisions, better work between drivers and engineers, and overall better results. Then with that experience under their belts, a run at the championships will be possible.
Remember that even though there was a long gap between Vettel's last championship and Max's first, Red Bull hadn't stopped winning. IIRC they won every year in-between, and more than once a year (I stand to be corrected on the stats; but the point is there wasn't a big gap between wins). They remembered how to win championships. McLaren haven't won one since 2008, and barely won anything - often not even finishing races - during the first hybrid era. They forgot how to do it.
Don't have too high expectations now. Let them - team & drivers - make their mistakes this year. Next year they'll be out of excuses.

The team can be partially blamed for the strategy, but Norris also seems to play a part in their questionable decisions. It was his choice to go to softs, his race engineer followed his instructions after confirming. The most notable example outside of Silverstone is Sochi 2021, where it was Norris' decision to stay on slicks and threw away the win. McLaren strategy decisions arent good enough, but their drivers arent working to correct their mistakes when they recognize them, and at times are even pushing the strategy to go in the wrong direction. Verstappen, Alonso, and Sainz have been capable of it, and excuses are running out for Norris with his experience level.

I’m not singling out you- basically every sports commentator from outside of North America does this- but you seem to be missing the best answer here, that he is a huge *choker*. Some people just are not capable of doing their best when it actually matters - when you see a talented athlete who doesn’t win significant things it’s not because of anything other than their own innate inability to push when it matters.

all the 8 year old land fanboys can say what they want but I don't think lando is ready to be champion. As he said earlier this year "If you want to go against the best driver in the world, it's not the best thing to do." He was speaking of being max's teammate but still that mentality proves he isn't ready to be champion. Maybe In a couple of years if Mclaren can keep up the pace but for this year and maybe even next year Lando is going to keep making these small mistakes that are the difference between P1 and P2

Honestly, I feel like a lot of people coddle Lando way too much. He lacks racecraft, he lacks the "it" factor to be a cold-blooded killer like Max or Lewis or Fernando or even George (on certain days) can be to challenge for race wins each weekend. Oscar I'm holding out judgement on because he's been very close to Lando in only his 2nd year at McLaren whereas Lando's been there for 5 years, he SHOULD be blowing him out of the water but he's really not.
Lando needs to be more decisive and refine his racecraft. Max is on it when it comes to tires and his racecraft, like it or not.

not only that, the communication between his race engineer. Look at the dialogue 10:08 and clearly u can see costly blunders made by Lando and his race engineer. What even worse is Will Joseph got tell Lando that Leclerc on soft don't have pace at all before this dialogue. From here, medium tyres is the right call, not the soft tyres. This is because the medium tyres for sure cover off both Max and Lewis actually

  • @MuhammadNiz007

Only Lewis and max can fight for the championship. Wherever these two go they will be leading a win and deliver. Norris had more downforce and better tyre wear and look at the last stint, Lando with a tyre 2 fewer laps on it still destroyed the tyres

I find it mildly amusing that Piastry has outscored Norris over the last 3 races in total.

outscored Lando because Lando had the incident in Austria, if not the points gap between them would've been more than 70 points which was concerning.
Norris also 9-3 up on him in quali and race this year.

I disagree that is not a problem that Lando can't 'dictate' the team what to do. Most f1 champions have that in them. Besides Saintz, Alonzo and Hamilton, Max does it too.
If Lando can't change that, he will be like Leclerc: A crapload of talent, but never be able to win any Championship.
