Ah yes. A nice, hot cup of Liber-tea for my ears. The composer for Heldivers 2 did a great job of capturing that heroic, expansive feeling of fighting aliens across the galaxy.
And between the bombastic propagandistic blasts of freedom horns, you get a kind of creeping, insidious synth segment that more realistically captures the feeling of being a helldiver. Imo at least.
This is going to absolutely slap at video games live! Seriously though, whatever the composer was paid, it wasn't enough. Legend. I really love the way three different sets of instruments come together to harmonize in a triumphant charge just before that much quieter interlude. The song really tells such a story. This music makes me imagine someone sitting in front of their screen, impatiently waiting to get through the queue, as the camera slooowly zooms in to their increasingly desperate, psycho eyes, all while this plays lmao
By chance I listened to the main theme for call of duty WW2 and I was like "hol' up a minute, this sounds familiar" only to find out the same guy did that song AND this one. Both are fantastic and although helldivers 2 has some server side issues that the devs are desperately trying to fix, the game is really REALLY good. I really like that ‘PA DADADA~’ part that I’ve heard every time I jump out of the ship to do the mission. It’s make me feel like I’m doing an act of hero. What a sound of DEMOCRACY!!!!
God, the theme at 15:00 sounds like a defeated theme of the original scene, but it has that “no matter how many time we fall, we must press on” feeling. And it ends with “but in the end, we will win on top of our dead comrades’ bodies, and Super Earth will see another day.” What a heroic song
And the scene shows helldivers getting into the hellpod, knowingly jumping into the battle that will most likely kill them for the sake of humanity. Can’t praise this enough!!
You know a theme song hits when every time you hear it if feels you with a sense of pride, its genius that it always play the second you dive from your ship, you are the helldiver!
For a $40 price tag, Arrowhead made a gem. The sound design is absolutely amazing. The theme as you're dropping down to the surface gives me goosebumps and make my hype to play the game.
This gave me such Pacific Rim vibes the first time, and every time I've launched since. The heavy feeling boots clicking into the footholds of the hellpod was the same as the characters locking into the Jagers, and the launch out of the Super Destroyer coupled with the live feed of the planet as you fall in, seeing other Helldivers and strategems being called in, and everything else. Didn't think I'd get to ever play a game that gave me that kind of feeling on every deployment.
I love your reactions/analyses of music pieces. It helps me to appreciate music a lot more on a day to day basis. Listening specific "areas" of interisting songs so much fun! Man the quiet stringe section actually reminded me of the Frostpunkt ost. It is soooo good! You have to react to "The City Must Survive" at least on point in your life man. I swear you won't regret it. It has special vibe of encroching doom to it you won't hear often. I cannot recommend it enough. Have a great time litening to it!
2:30 I think since this theme plays when you "deploy", which is basically you being launched in a pod, they were trying to emulate the feeling of getting dropped into the action.
What a great inspirational theme? I played this yesterday for the first time. Stupidly I hadn’t realised it was a totally multiplayer game; A bit disappointed, I ‘jumped ‘ in after a mild telling off from a squad member. ( to be fair, I didn’t have a clue what to do!) After my first battle, it showed my stats, which were not at all bad in my opinion. Anyway, I am hooked. Seems like an epic experience waiting for me.
Best game Ive played in a long time. This piece could not be a better representation of the game, and if you like Starship Troopers you will absolutely love Helldivers.
I like the BOOK not the horrid film. This game seems to take more inspiration from the book than the film (though not much more) so that’s a step in the right direction.
The trumpets was playing the Melody together with horns and trombones in the beginning of the theme in unison, and lower register. Its a common thing so its getting even cooler when the parts split up the next time the Melody comes with the fanfare.
I love how the feeling of the theme changes, as it goes on. It starts with this patriotic orchestral part that gets you hyped up, then it eventually settles into this almost melancholic sounding section, which makes me feel like I'm mourning the lost lives of my comrades. And then it picks up, again, but it isn't quite the victorious, patriotic sound. It's more desperate, like a final push, trying to bring you and the remaining comrades back home, putting all on the final card in pure desperation. And at the very end, it sounds almost reflective. Honestly, that feels like a great reflection of the gameplay loop for me. I'm usually not big on shooters, and live service games aren't my cup of (liber-) tea at all, but this game really hooked me. The tone of satire about patrionism and propaganda is honestly pretty funny, and the actual gameplay is really fun. The mechanics work well together, everything feels really polished, the missions are varied and the entire thing honestly just feels really fresh. I'm enjoying it a lot.
Wilbert Roget, II did an absolutely incredible job with the soundtrack! We’ve not had such an epic or patriotic theme for a video game like this, in a long time. It fits the various different tone/s of the game, so well.
I dont know if it was a coincidence or not, but I found it cool that the main brass motif has four notes that possibly could be representing the four Helldivers in each team.
This game hits all points i thoroughly enjoy music already but damn could i tell this was impressive from a general bystanders perspective. Its so rich and conveys what the game is ab and how it wants you to feel.
What I love about this theme is that it's melody and motif never accompanies you in battle until the climax of your efforts. As soon as you land in hell, it goes dead quiet. The mirage falls, and doesn't come back until you successfully spread managed democracy.
The second part is being extracted, and seeing your post-mission progress (watching the numbers). Feels extremely powerful, like "LET'S FUCKING GOOOO!!!!" powerful.
Some of the quieter string parts remind me of Austin Wintory’s “Apotheosis”, from the Journey OST. It has a similar light, airy, and transcendent tone to it. It’s nice to be reminded of one of my favorites from high school orchestra.
Saw a lets play that started (of course) on the ship where the ppl were mocking around with walking styles and emotes. Thought "OK, the capes are quite cool, but what's thate game about actually" (had HD1 nor HD2 not on the radar at all). As soon as they stepped into the Hellpods and dropped down to THAT epic music, I was CAUGHT! The following scenes, the atmosphere and the hilarious EDF like humour only were the cherries on top for me. Very amazing to see your analysis of the music that - definetly - caught me!
I don't know if you did it on purpose but I find it funny the words you describe the start of music with. "We're diving right into it", "I feel we are really going somewhere" & "Where are we going next?" - when describing the music that plays as you dive from orbit onto alien planets :)
For anyone wondering what the "Managed Democracy" means they keep referring to: "Citizens of the federation of Super Earth use automated voting software; they answer a few questions on the Galactic Wide Web (GWW) and the computer votes for them based on that outcome. The GWW is a network of interlinked communication devices that transmit data using quantum communication..." "Questions regarding the Federation or Government of Super Earth shall be sent to the appropriate quadrant. It is illegal to express oneself openly about the Federation or Government of Super Earth in a negative manner and serious cases may result in arrest or termination. Brought to you by Super Earth Pt Ltd. Sponsored by Super Earth." There are also Tiers of Citizenship, which the preorder rank is inspired by. TLDR: Emphasis on 'Managed' Oh an besides the Terminids and the Cyborgs, there are also Illuminates which we have not seen in HD2 yet, excited for when they eventualy come out.
What's even more interesting about this piece of music is that the first bit is what plays when you drop into every mission. So that kind of pumped up, "Here comes the heroes! LET'S GO!!!" kind of feeling it extrudes is very present in the game. You don't hear the second "reprise" so much, but it's very akin to during a mission, you've gone and you've cleared out some enemy outposts, you've got samples and side objectives. You're kicking names and taking a*ses....or something. And then the solemn bridge is kind of like when the fan hits the septic tank, made have been mistakes, and you're basically watching one diver carry the mission while they dodge and are bullied across the map. The last resurgence is like your reliance on that single reinforce (after you've lost all of your others and have to wait for 2 minutes for another single reinforce [respawn]) and seeing them duck and weave and do an impossible carry of the mission. So yeah, the theme music essentially encapsulates the general feeling of an average HellDivers 2 mission, sans crashing and the accidental team killing. It also kind of feels like what you go through as the player IRL as you jump it, it's super fun. You're there with your friends having a blast, and then you hit the grind or content wall of either it's too grindy or you've already done everything the game generally has to offer. Do you quit or keep fighting for Super Earth? The final resurgence gives you that answer. Also, sans some instability and jank with the latest content, the game has been good to go for a while. You've been shirking your Democratic Duty to Super Earth, dear citizen! BECOME FREE!!! BECOME! A! HELLDIVER!!!!!!
I just want someone to react and talk about the extraction song just because it sticks with me more plus it reminds me of my favorite post competition songs we'd play back in high school
I love how much they incorporate this theme into the game, it makes you feel so heroic and hypes you the hell up. Incredible soundtrack for a top tier game.
I love how the melody mimics the general events of the story at that simple instinctual level: BUM Bum bum bummm - descending into minor/dissonant - the Helldiver dropping in to the destroyed and hopeless enemy territory Buuummm BUUUMMM - ascends into major/heroic - the Helldiver rises and fights towards victory, hope is restored
Helldivers 2 is literally suffering from success. Its just as fun as the first one and the different POV doesn't bother me at all. I can only hope they get more server support because the release of the 3rd enemy faction (if they get around to it) and future updates are gonna cause another influx of players.
The Illuminates were challenging with their snipers and deployable shield wall, hopefully we can get our Mechs cuz that will be a game changer when fighting absolute giant hords of enemy
First time viewer. I've seen countless videos of producer and composition reactions. And this is the first time i can actually tell the reviewer has more to add than "ohh I like that part".

To answer your question. The game has managed to accomplish something that was very needed at this time. It is fun, and it is an actual escape from the mess of the real world. Also, since it is all co-op, it does a great job of bringing players together and focused on common goals. There is some great comradery between Helldivers. And remember, when in doubt yell "For Democracy" and charge into your problems head on"!
I played violin for about 15 yrs, from early elementary all the way through high school graduation and I get mushy inside when I hear a great orchestra. The horns are probably my favorite part in this piece. HD3 has a banger soundtrack.

This song gives me goosebumps EVERY TIME!
I don't know if you did it on purpose but I find it funny the words you describe the start of music with. "We're diving right into it", "I feel we are really going somewhere" & "Where are we going next?" - when describing the music that plays as you dive from orbit onto alien planets :)
For anyone wondering what the "Managed Democracy" means they keep referring to:
"Citizens of the federation of Super Earth use automated voting software; they answer a few questions on the Galactic Wide Web (GWW) and the computer votes for them based on that outcome. The GWW is a network of interlinked communication devices that transmit data using quantum communication..."
"Questions regarding the Federation or Government of Super Earth shall be sent to the appropriate quadrant. It is illegal to express oneself openly about the Federation or Government of Super Earth in a negative manner and serious cases may result in arrest or termination. Brought to you by Super Earth Pt Ltd. Sponsored by Super Earth."
There are also Tiers of Citizenship, which the preorder rank is inspired by.
TLDR: Emphasis on 'Managed'
Oh an besides the Terminids and the Cyborgs, there are also Illuminates which we have not seen in HD2 yet, excited for when they eventualy come out.
We haven’t seen the cyborgs yet. The new ones are pure robots, the Automotons!
Wilbert Roget II needs to win every video game music award that exists for this masterpiece!
I didn't even know there was a second movement to this song - it has no right to be that beautiful.
Fun fact, that second half is a callback to the first helldivers theme. :D
I can't WAIT to hear this played by the The Game Awards orchestra this year (after it's inevitable nomination for game of the year)
This melody is almost as sweet as Liber-tea
🤘🤘🤘
I fcking LOVE this one
The melody starts with four descending notes which appear to represent the four Helldivers descending upon the planet in their Hellpods.
I just want someone to react and talk about the extraction song just because it sticks with me more plus it reminds me of my favorite post competition songs we'd play back in high school
Ill take a look
This theme just makes me want to jump in and WASTE THOSE BUGS!
What you called "The Bridge" reminds me of similar string orchestration of the music from "Firefly".
I like how the theme constantly makes a dive, mirror of the action of diving from the ship to the battlefield
The trumpets in the reprisal make me want to dust off my Stradivarius 🥰
I love how much they incorporate this theme into the game, it makes you feel so heroic and hypes you the hell up. Incredible soundtrack for a top tier game.
I love how the melody mimics the general events of the story at that simple instinctual level:
BUM Bum bum bummm - descending into minor/dissonant - the Helldiver dropping in to the destroyed and hopeless enemy territory
Buuummm BUUUMMM - ascends into major/heroic - the Helldiver rises and fights towards victory, hope is restored
Hopefully you've played recently and seen our new/old friends lol
THE SONG OF THE YEAR.
At 14:23. The horns coming in under the strings right there was🔥. I had to replay just that part a few times.
This swells my heart with pride for super earth , remember service guarantees citizenship
Service protects our way of life!
Excellent analysis! Glad I came across this channel for the first time. Super interesting and informative for a composer like myself!
Waiting for matchmaking to get fixed, got my liber-tea and ready for your video!
This game is crazy good. And the music fits perfectly.
First time viewer. I've seen countless videos of producer and composition reactions. And this is the first time i can actually tell the reviewer has more to add than "ohh I like that part".
Is the game as good as the theme, YES
Simply epic.
the violin kills me
Recently found your channel and love your Eve and Polyphia stuff especially, been loving helldivers too so glad to see you reacting to it. Doubt my one comment will influence it but would love to see you react to some protest the hero at some point they are my favourite band and I really think you would appreciate what they do musically. Although I get they are hardly the most popular band out there so guess they may not be the best pick algorithmically lol. Anyway thanks for the great content can't wait to see more stuff its really interesting seeing your takes on some of my favourite bands and game soundtracks!❤
Thx for the nice comment
To answer your question. The game has managed to accomplish something that was very needed at this time. It is fun, and it is an actual escape from the mess of the real world. Also, since it is all co-op, it does a great job of bringing players together and focused on common goals. There is some great comradery between Helldivers. And remember, when in doubt yell "For Democracy" and charge into your problems head on"!
I can’t hear this song without the sound of our drop pods hitting the ground with immediate gunfire on those damn bugs and bots
It’s the horns of triumph and victory when they come in on the drop with power you feel it
Its been said already, but you have to do the extraction theme, theres so much to dissect
The composer makes songs for so many shows. Honestly composers are the unsung heroes of modern entertainment
Dat resolve 11:42 - 11:49 brass ascending gets me everytime. 🥹🥹
IVE NEVER WANTED TO FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY MORE!!! Salute to my fellow Divers!! 🫡
Have you seen the Promo for "Star Engine", it is long but the composition is beautiful.
I played violin for about 15 yrs, from early elementary all the way through high school graduation and I get mushy inside when I hear a great orchestra. The horns are probably my favorite part in this piece. HD3 has a banger soundtrack.
Ok now I'm waiting for the 'Helldivers 2 theme makes everything even more epic' videos to flood YT
The theme and the game blended together so perfectly that they can't be replaced or separated.
I can't be the only person who's reminded of that theme from some of the Army ads from a decade ago. Every time the peak hits in Helldivers, it takes my mind right to those Army ads lol
Maleveon creek needs you soldier
I think the game is even better.
And the drop initiating sequence never gets boring for me.
This overall is just fantastic.
I can only imagine when the final mix of this peice was played to the tired, weary devs who put this gem of a game together, the entire office just grinned and cheered. I love video game music and this is up there with the best main themes I've ever heard.
Should checkout the extraction theme as well, can really tell that its the same guy who did the music for Last Wish
The best way I can describe it is. A mixture of starship troopers. Terminator And A mixture of sci fi like Star trek stargate star wars etc* its one of those games that's really fun to play with friends And on topic of servers , they just posted something in the discord today about they're rolling out some updates this week for things And I haven't played a game and so long that made me laugh so hard
Very strong Aliens vibes at times. You character yells funny one liners at the like Hudson did, bugs coming at you while you stand in a line with your buddy mowing them down. It's amazing, the atmosphere of this game is off the charts.
