Is this the one the news media is touting as a "warning to China"? That's like beating up someone while they're tied up to show everyone what a badass you are.

If it had no fuel and ammunition, why was it going up in smoke?

Aluminum. Seems like an intentional design flaw

Other internal combustibles were not removed, such as lagging, old paint, old cabling, etc. Aluminum will begin to burn and melt at 1,220 degrees. Not fully ignited propellants from the missiles also add to a fire as well.

I was thinking the same thing about your comment. These old gals are decommissioned for a reason, and if they aren't turned into new diving attractions via Blue Team target practice, Blue Team wouldn't get any practice. Until war.

No worse an ending than ending up as a neglected overly optimistic museum ship that sinks in harbor from neglect, or cut up and recycled for rebar.

@@RGNSS-hn8ew beyond shipboard evolutions for handling warshot ordinance, firecontrol and executing live fire OPs etc - which need not necessarily involve sending thousands of tonnes of scrapmetal to the bottom of the ocean - I am not convinced there is much value to this. The target frigate could not shoot back at the ships engaging it, nor counterfire, nor use point defences against the incoming rounds, jam them, decoy, or even maneuver.. she is not even making way and presumably there is little scope for EMCON with nobody aboard, no EW suite powered up and no machinery fired. meanwhile the RCS of big old lattice masts is apparently higher than most newer warships have been designed - so this is like proof of concept for Harpoon, an old weapon which we already knew worked anyway, against an immobile and effectively de-militarised target that is also about as old. How similar does the OH PERRY FFG even rate to the nearest PLAN FF/DD/CG in terms of construction, protection, and compartmentisation and resulting ability to withstand damage? Probably not very I will hazard. So I rate this sinkex as about as illuminating as the Mitchell tests were a century ago.. i.e.: yes it is possible to sink a warship with myriad antiship ordinance delivered in myriad ways - especially when the ship can't react to you or shoot back, or employ any damage control whatsoever. Helping Ukraine sink RFS MOSKVA was much more useful as target practice goes - especially considering the rare opportunity to observe the effect of a similar, read small, charge size, against a ship of arguably much heavier construction.
