Of all the photos I have seen of the Queen Elizabeth and her F35’s the most notable are those showing the F35 coming over the stern of the carrier in the new landing system. Compared to the F18’s high speed landing and grabbing the arrester wire it is slow and short. Really amazing. People should have pride in our little country. First in all the aspects of carrier development. The first in all the following,
carrier, carrier landing, angled flight deck, steam catapult, illuminated carrier landing system, vtol aircraft, the Harrier , forerunner of the F35, ramp take-off, carrier specifically constructed for the F35b, and finally the most beautiful and gracious landing system you could ask for.

If you think a carrier strike group is impressive today , an American Task Force in World War Two would have blown your socks off. Four battleships, six Essex class fleet carriers, two or three light carriers several heavy cruisers, numerous destroyers and a fleet train stretching back for miles. That was one, and they had about three of them. The Japanese did not have a prayer. Yamamoto was perfectly correct ,the Japanese had indeed woke up a sleeping giant.
Brilliant stuff! So glad the US has a role to play in HMS Queen Elizabeth’s CSG.
USA saved us in 1944. Working together with them now also makes the UK 🇬🇧 happy and safe 🙏🙏😊🤝💪

That's why in WW 1 and 2 the Brits had large forces stationed in Egypt, and why they were so reluctant to give full independence to Egypt for so long.
Most of the desert army’s supplies came through the canal after a long voyage round the Cape. For the Empire it was one of its most important links.

Where does the submarine escort go? the canal isn't deep enough for it to stay submerged so does it peel off and do something else while another sub is waiting on the other side of the canal and pickup escort duties?
It will already be on the other side. One for the Mediterranean, one for the other side?
Submarines are required to transit the canal on the surface and do once in a while. Sometimes like would be in a case like this where a whole force is travelling together and sometimes as a show of force to enemies in the relevant places.
Good to see a UK naval presence moving towards to the south-east Asia area. CCP China needs to know that the freedom loving countries of the world will not put up with their bully tactics. Countries such as Australia has supported the UK through 2 world wars. Its good to see the UK now standing up for its friends and allied countries.

Can i ask, would a Suez Canal pilot jump on board and steer the QE while transiting the Canal or does this not apply to military vessels?
If I remember correctly pilots don't direct military vessels directly but rather give the best advice of steering the vessel to the navigation officer/officer who has conduct of the ship instead.
I would guess so civilians are often abroad the ship and I guess any secretive/ important to national security stuff is hidden and the pilot would be on the bridge and only exit the bridge to leave the ship

Asside from putting the fate of a nations's national security assets in the hands of another nation's civilian pilot, which is just not going to happen... military vessels are in general sufficiently dissimilar from the kind of cargo & passenger vessels that pilots are used to, so they would be more likely to crash than just directing the practiced helmsman.

All ships military or civil must carry a certificated Egyptian pilot. He is there to guide and advise the captain on navigating the waters of the canal and lakes.

@@ramal5708 google "argentina UK Falklands war". They've had a dispute for centuries that resulted in a war in 1982. It was close and some argue that the only reason the UK succeeded then was the US intervened through channels to guarantee UK would win. UK was in recession at the time and had undergone military cuts and was slightly vulnerable. The UK controlling the Falklands means they will have a large amount of needed resources, incl natural gas and oil. Being able to project power with the Queen Elizabeth means essentially no nation other than US or China can effectively challenge the UK navy(and arguably the Chinese might have a hard time against two UK carriers). I'm a former US soldier who spoke with a British commando who fought there.

I would imagine that protocols are firmly in place seeing as we've been using VTOL aircraft for our carriers since the 80s.
F35BS have 3 ways of landing

It's a mixture at the minute, the UK have some F-35 on board and the USMC also do. The UK haven't received their full order of F-35 yet (Even with its full planned complement, technically they could fit a lot more aircraft) so as they plan on working closely with these new carriers they've used this opportunity to work together.

We were going from Port Suez to Port Said and into the Med. On the top section nearest to Port Said, on the left bank on a couple of occasions they turned round, bent over and showed their arses.

The original call was: 'the regulars are coming'..... both sides were British, which is part of the reason the British Army stopped fighting; no stomach for war against British Colonists back on the Houses of Parliament. And no financial benefit owning non tax paying Colonies which didn't produce much in the way of exportable crops.

I think slight American revisionism paints it as a war won by heroic farmers against a professional army, but really it was Lafayette and his 15000 French soldiers who helped. There was cheering I the Houses of Parliament when the decision was made to stop fighting fellow Brits, and focus on fighting the French in France rather than a proxy war in an ultimately indefensible territory.

There is confirmed to be one Astute class within CSG21, though I don't believe it's confirmed which one, it probably passes while surfaced as the Suez draft is something like 66ft and the Astute draft is 33ft, so not a whole lot of room to transit while submerged.

During Night hours is the best way for subs, that is if the subs are waiting in the Indian Ocean.

How many F35's can she take captain! Looks like perhaps 20ish max, which is enough. Quite a large deck for a 65k tonne carrier.
The Royal Navy's web site says 24 fighters normally, 36 in surge mode. This is in addition to some helicopters to provide AWACS and electronic warfare capabilities. Total maximum aircraft complement is officially 40, same source. This is purely speculation but I believe the highly competent Royal Navy could cram in roughly 50 aircraft total and make it work if they were pressed, more would just make the air wing unsafe to operate. Unless you see a link to an official source you can dismiss any figure above 40 as unofficial speculation.
In a real life fully arm situation she would carry 24 fighters and 36 helicopters.

Cockpit canopy has multiple filters. So not really.

@@ajwest3081 I think they are subject to far more stresses in the air and at altitude then they would be sitting in the sun on the deck :)
As someone else said they have special UV filters on them as when you are above the clouds the sun is much brighter, hence why the helmet visors are tinted with UV filters as well. So while the sun baking on them will degrade them, it's such a slow process it's negligible.

The Union jack only flies in port/ special occasions, while at sea the White Ensign is flown from the main mast or other equivalent point on the ship.

UK Carrier Strike Group? The BBC said neither of these two new wonderful gigantic impressive carriers could sail without escort by the US Navy, as the Royal Navy is without the refuelling, anti-aircraft and anti-submarine vessels needed to escort them by itself. Did they get that right?
Sort of, kind of. There are some points there, but oversimplified or distorted.
The Type 45 destroyers are some of the best anti-air vessels around, so that's flat wrong.
The RN currently lacks quality anti-sub escorts beyond the remaining Type 23 frigates built in the 80s and 90s, but this is tempered by the high quality of the Astute-class subs and the QE's considerable helicopter complement, as well as the upcoming purchase of American P-8 patrol aircraft. Designs like the Type 26 and Type 32 vessels are due to fill this gap in fleet capability in the next 5 to 10 years.
With refueling it is again a bit of an overstatement. The RN has one fleet tanker/resupply vessel, the Fort Victoria, but it is old and alone. There are also the four smaller Tide-class ships. And this is also slightly alleviated by the cargo moving of the QE's helicopter facilities. The RN intends to replace the Fort Victoria with up to three more modern ships of a similar size, with work starting in the next two years.
That's not correct, but it sort of resembles the truth. The Royal Navy has the destroyers and submarines needed (i.e. the combat ships), but it does not have enough F-35 fighters to operate them with a full strike group on board even one of the two. Also in some parts of the world the US Navy is providing refuelling and replenishment ships so they can resupply at sea when out of reach of friendly ports and Royal Navy resupply. The procurement of the F-35 is also very slow as there has been an agreement that Israel get their order first as they have the more urgent need, so we are currently getting only about 4(?) per year delivered from F-35 production. The current Queen Elizabeth air wing has Royal Navy F-35s and US Marine F-35s so that they can train together and make up a complete wing for one carrier group. The other ship in the class is operated as a helicopter assault carrier.
Interestingly as well as having US Marine F-35b fighters operating from Queen Elizabeth there are Royal Navy F-35bs operating from US Navy ships, though I cannot recall which vessels. And as luck would have it I can't find my original source on that either. Anyone here know about that side of things?
It's a NATO deployment, not a British deployment. If it was a British deployment, then they would be all British ships. Other NATO ships sail with American, and French carrier's. When it comes to carriers, then the more friendly nations involved, the better
