  • Matthew talks about the differences between US and UK book covers. Why are they different? What are the general trends, and what does that say about our cultural differences?
So sorry for the grand overuse of the phrase "there is a sense that." Woof, it was bad.

Are the Ladybird spoof/parody books known in the US? They use the fantastic original 50s/60s book covers, which is their main feature, although the images are very British.

Very interesting. Having grown up watching American and Movies and TV shows, there are a lot of differences between the US and UK that are obvious to me (e.g. pronunciation and spelling of certain words, your school and university system, you drive on the right, etc). However many of your videos have still shown me differences I didn't even know existed. I had no idea that you don't use duvets in the US, or that your book covers are different from ours.
Please keep the US/UK comparison videos coming - they're very enjoyable and informative.

Interesting subject to comment on . Being a Brit with an American husband and spending much time in the US (and US bookshops), I have to agree with Matt. The particular issue I have with American published books is that of the format and paper quality. The size feels awkward and the font noticeably different.
I also agree with Matt regarding with the concern about the increasing uniformity of book covers.

The cover of a book makes no difference to whether I buy it or not. Though I do prefer the UK cover (from UK). I read the synopsis to see if I find the story interesting. But I have always been a bookworm and read everyday.

At one time in the UK there were very many small independent book publishers ,who over time were swallowed up and amalgamated into larger firms
.Many of these have been bought by American publishers ,who obviously apply American marketing styles ( because of course they think they know best) and this could be the reason for a similarity in cover design .
Also, when there were the independent publishers ,there was work for many diverse artists who were commissioned to produce material, resulting in now out-of-print books valued for the covers alone .

Very interesting I will admit as a Brit when looking for book I'm not that interested in the cover I'm looking at titles, authors name and l read the synopsis. The book's pictorial cover is not something my eye goes to foremost.
BTW I watch a lot of TV series and films from Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan etc etc and whenever I see book in English within those series they always have the British Book Cover not an American Book Cover. It's something that always catches my eye because I'll have the very same book in one of my many bookcases.

There is a similar video I've seen about videogame cover art called The Death of Video Game Box Art. It talks about how the American way of making cover art has completely taken over the industry. Just like you they mention the whole main character/faces being prominently displayed on the American designs, whereas the Japanese covers would be more interesting and artistic.
It's a shame that every single videogame now has the protagonist holding a big gun on the cover, or even worse just a big zoomed in picture of their face.

Haha, most people do, even if they aren't aware that they are. Statistically, good or bad book covers effect sales.

    • @graceygrumble

I thought that, but then I have to admit it affects me. I pick up a book, read the blurb and take a chance if it sounds interesting. However, I went on holiday, once and had read everything in the book exchange box, except one book, so I eventually picked up a book that was neither visually, nor blurb attractive.
Conn Iggulden 'The Gates of Rome'.
I have subsequently devoured everything he's written. Marvellous find!
So, it would be disingenuous of me to say that I don't judge a book by it's cover. Which irks me, quite frankly.

Emperor Series Collection: The Gods of War, The Field of Swords, The Death of Kings, The Gates of Rome.
I think the fact that it was the last book in a series of 5 put me off, until I was desperate.
Start with The Gods of War and thank me later. ;)

What on earth have book covers to do with the content of the book?
If people buy a book solely on the picture on the cover, they obviously don't have much knowledge about literature.

It's a bit like Music album covers
Take Ac/Dc's "Dirty Deeds" for example.
The Aussie cover shows the band in a pool hall but the export shows them in a supermarket parking lot ?
Yeah, me too. I have no idea how that was thought an improvement !
    The contents were identical iirc

This is interesting. Actually, judging by the examples you showed, I think that US book covers have become a lot more 'European-looking' over the past few decades. I'm 62 now and I remember that in the late 70s and 80s, American paperback book covers tended to have less illustrations on the front, but were usually covered in words - front and back - usually rave reviews from newspapers, which was done to sell them as a product, I suppose.
