@@KingBrunoTheQuestionableTesla is definitely not glam. They’re a 70s band that happened to hit the scene in the 80s. More Bad Company than Bang Tango.
This idea popped into my head just there day. In no particular order it's easy; Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Motley Cruel and Poison. The biggest sellers, touring bands and on MTV in late 80s not named Metallica, GNR or VH. Outside of Motley, these were MY bands, especially Poison. To this day I've never met one person who likes Poison. Still I debate in my head is this really Hair Metal or Glam? Back in '89 it was just hard rock at it's heaviest. Really just rock n' roll to myself. At least that's the attitude. Music to piss off your parents according to Lemmy! Still dig it at 55 years old!
I think you guys needed to define what you mean by Glam Metal. What is the Glam Metal sound? Is it the way they dressed and if they wore make up? It’s hard to define the genre without a definition. So it follows it’s also hard to pick bands that define Glam Metal. If you use Poison as an example it gets a little easier.
We did that at the beginning actually. Chris even read a definition. But you would need to go back to the first episode which is called What Defines The Sound Of Glam Metal if you want a longer explanation.
When I think of glam metal I think of a more specific sound and image. Best example would be Poison. I prefer the term hair metal, which is basically hard rock from 83-92. With that definition my big 4 would be Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Van Halen and Guns n Roses.
They predate the genre. It’s the same reason that Van Halen, Aerosmith, and KISS are not considered Glam Metal bands. They all released Glam Metal albums during the era but they predate it and were part of other genres.
Fantastic discussion. I am surprised that I have quite a lot of albums in this genre. Not sure if this band fits, but what about Autograph as part of glam? It would not be top four by any means.
Motley Crue Ratt Bon Jovi Poison That’s the definitive top 4 list of glam metal bands for me. Honorable mentions: Cinderella Dokken Skid Row (began as glam) Guns n Roses (began as glam) Def Leppard Winger LA Guns (sleaze glam and one of my favorites)
@@MrZappaman420 But aren't Tesla like White Lion? Too introspective? I don't know them that well just guessing by their album covers...Brendon would know!
A lot of people refuse to call VH and GnR glam because that would mean they have to admit to liking glam metal. To me, if I would put it in a glam metal playlist it is glam metal. So I do include thosr bands!
Quite hard to decide. Let's suppose that we freeze time in 1988. Van Halen was never Glam Metal, basically because it was never a Glam band, perhaps a bit of a Metal band, but more like a Hard Rock. Guns and Roses was never Glam Metal, no Metal in Guns and Roses. Glam Metal stands for "Glam" and "Metal", that being said. Then those names are : Leppard, Crue, Bon Jovi, Poison. But considering the fact that Leppard, Bon Jovi and The Crue moved to other genres, I would go with : Poison, Ratt, Cinderella, Dokken. Those we real Glam Metal bands, perhaps Cinderella had a bit of a southern influence, but their image was really Glam Metal.
Why are you freezing time in the middle of the era? Also the name Glam Metal never only ment Metal. That name came about because Glam Rock had already been used in the 70’s and to distinguish the new era and genre they used Glam Metal as the name. But there were plenty of Rock bands included in the Glam Metal banner.
@@BrendonSnyder I agree, yeah. But I believe, even though Glam Metal might include many different bands, that there's some kind of concept behind. I relate that to having a Hard Rock sound. Bands like Guns and Roses and Faster Pussycat had a Punk / Rolling Stones influence. I can't consider them Glam Metal, bit I get the picture. Van Halen had no Glam at all, they were a straight Hard Rock band, I do believe Van Halen paved the way to a lot of those bands' sound like Ratt and Dokken. It's quite hard for me to decide which ones are the 4. The reason why I used the "freezing time" concept is because I do believe that in the end, Bon Jovi ended up near Springsteen, Leppard ended up somewhere else, etc. Bands like Ratt or Dokken might have had a few different albums, but almost their entire carrer they had a concept. I'm always discussing this with my friends, lol, it's a never ending chat. Quite fun.
Cinderella was not glam metal, the man himself Tommy Keifer said so. They were forced into the glam image on the first album for appearance only. The music itself is hard rock blues.
@@wallofrock6725 I agree, but again, quite hard to decid what's Glam Metal and what's not. Songs like "Once Around The Ride" have a Metal edge, but again, I do consider Cinderella more like a bluesy influenced band. You see the thing is that in a way all these bands were different from each other. That's the beauty of it. Definitely they came from the Blues and Classic Rock.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ 1. Guns n roses 2. Bon jovi 3. Def leppard 4. Motley crue HM Whitesnake, Ratt skid row, poison I think hair metal is kinda different to glam metal. I really think we're talking hair metal
I would exclude Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and Guns N Roses personally. Just instinctively. No argument with people including them, it's just what springs to mind. The no.1 definitive pick has to be Motley Crue. After that, I'd go with Poison, Ratt and Cinderella.
I know you don't wanna hear it but I don't even think glam is a thing. It's all just rock and roll. I did enjoy the discussion though Thanks for the video.
By my books: #1: Guns N' Roses #2: Motley Crue #3: Poison #4: Skid Row Honorable mentions are obviously FireHouse (my personal favorite) and Bon Jovi! As for who I call the godfathers, AKA the Sabbath of Glam Metal: I say Kiss (for the look and lyrical contents), and second, Van Halen as Brendon said. 1984 was a proto-glam record, as was Kiss' Lick It Up record. Glam got me into rock n' roll when I was just four years old, Firehouse was my first ever favorite band, or as much of a favorite band you can have from 4-10 lol.
Kiss wouldn't exist without the New York Dolls (neither would GnR) they were my favorite band at 6. ;) now at 56 nothing has changed. I like your Firehouse story. It's cool see a new band I was watching start their career (The first time I saw them was at l'amour in Brooklyn in front of a couple of hundred people) had an impact on a new generation of kids the same way it happened to me in the 70's. Anyway, I highly suggest you check out the first 2 Dolls records & LAMF by Johnny Thunders. By listing to those records You'll hear the beginnings of punk, & what became 80's hard rock. Also check out Hanoi Rocks.
@@ThundersMcCoy cheers man, I've definitely heard that about the Dolls and Kiss, gonna have to check them out! As for Hanoi I'll add them to my list as well. It must've been so awesome being around to really see Firehouse coming up, man they were phenomenal and I think they would've been huge had they hit the scene in '86-'88
Those bands are Glam Rock not Glam Metal so they’re not the “originals” they’re a different genre. The originals are bands like Motley Crue, Dokken, Ratt, etc.
Van Halen,Guns n' Roses, and Def Leppard are exempt in my opinion. Also, early 80's and mid 80's are different. Early 80's: 1.Motley Crue 2.Ratt 3.Dokken 4.W.A.S.P. Mid 80's: 1.Poison 2.Bon Jovi 3.Cinderella 4.Whitesnake(yes, they were an offshoot of Deep Purple and had many albums, but many people didn't know that.)
1.) Motley Crue - had the advantage of being early. The early image came from Sister. Later styles and image came from what was happening on the Strip at the time. Great marketing - spotty records after Shout. SATD is one of my all-time favorites. 2.) Ratt - Best musicianship, unique voice, but lots of filler on records after OOTC. 3.) Poison - The first record was a raw, fun guilty pleasure. Trying to be a “serious artist” on later albums drove me away. 4.) Cinderella - The first record is terrific start to finish. Good songwriting. The screechey AC/DC vocals can be a turn-off at times. Tom’s real voice is much better. *I feel Dokken could be in there, but don’t have the sales or popularity of the others. *Twisted Sister deserves a spot, too. I love YCSR&R and Stay Hungry.
I would say Ratt seriously nosedived after IOYP, that was it for me, no more. As for Tom's vox it gave them a distinctive harder edge which I loved for the Night Songs album. I did own the LCW album at the time but it hasn't aged well and I hated so much of the cheesy blues-rock scene from the late 80s. I need to check out the Stay Hungry album a little more.
Guns n Roses is just rock n roll. Heavily influenced by bands like Thin Lizzy, so I dont class that as Glam. I think we are misunderstanding the word Glam in this topic. The most glamorous band in the world has to be Kiss, but in the UK it was Slade.
Do you really feel Cinderella was the biggest band of the era and did more for the genre than bands like Ratt and Poison? I wouldn’t think of Cinderella as a top tier band. They were more second wave to me after the originators. But a great band nonetheless and definitely worthy of a position. They almost made my list.
Okay, not a big four, but when i think glam metal, the first band that always comes to mind ....Pretty Boy Floyd....late to the party in 1987 but nonetheless glam metal through and through and like Poison, carrying the mantle loud and proud....just my opinion!
Here in the UK, we had glam metal in the early 70's, and I would say the Kings of glam metal was Slade. They were the most metal sounding glam rock we had, long long time before the American bands your talking about. Glam rock and metal was a big deal here in the early mid 70's. Suzi Quatro, Status Quo etc.
It's got be Slade, Sweet, The Dolls & Hanoi. That's the sound & the style right there. Without those bands you don't get the GnR's, Poison's, Motley's and even Kiss. Maybe Bowie is in there somewhere but he was a hippie until he got wind of what was going on in New York. Suzi was great but didn't make enough noise in the U.S. (even underground) to have much of an impact...in fact more people know who Leather Tuscadero is. :P
Metallica: The biggest of the four and one of the first I say the Metallica of glam metal is Motley Crue Slayer: the heaviest and most aggressive of the four I would have say Dokken is one of the heaviest glam metal bands and Lynch had an aggressive guitar style in comparison Megadeth: chip on their shoulder from split from a big band and divisive vocal style I think Frehley’s Comet is the Megadeth of glam metal. He has an interesting voice and just came out of KISS Anthrax: east coast band and many people think don’t deserve to be in the big four I think Twisted Sister is the Anthrax of glam metal. They’re from NYC and they had three well regarded albums and then dropped off just like Anthrax
I am from Australia, and Ratt are no names in my country. Is KISS considered Glam? I know they started in the 70s Just a question. The biggest glam bands in my country where Motley Crue, Poison, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. Van Halen and Kiss are also very big in my country. Skid Row and Guns N Roses where big but are not true glam in my opinion and where in the 2nd wave. Aerosmith also became glam but not what I think of as Glam. Motley Crue and Poison are the most iconic in my opinion. If you don't pick them then their is something wrong.
Yes we discussed Kiss during the video and said they are not a Glam Metal band because they’re from the 70’s and predate the genre. If anything they’re a Glam Rock band which is a whole different genre.
To me shout at the devil is definitely glam. The album pictures are seriously glam and too young to fall in love,Red Hot and looks that kill are definitely glam songs in my opinion with a harder edge, but definitely glam to me.
I’m sure this doesn’t need stating but…Marilyn Manson is neither Glam Metal nor Glam Rock. He is industrial Metal which has absolutely no characteristics associated with either Glam Metal or Glam Rock. 🤦♂️
Definitely: Ratt Dokken Motley Crue Poison But not: Van Halen Cinderella Guns n Posers Def Leppard Bon Phoney is questionable, they fell into glam like Leppard and looked more glam. I’d probably lean yes for Jon Bon.

Really just rock n' roll to myself. At least that's the attitude. Music to piss off your parents according to Lemmy! Still dig it at 55 years old!
So much fun!🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
If you were to include VH then you must include KISS
I think you guys needed to define what you mean by Glam Metal. What is the Glam Metal sound? Is it the way they dressed and if they wore make up? It’s hard to define the genre without a definition. So it follows it’s also hard to pick bands that define Glam Metal. If you use Poison as an example it gets a little easier.
We did that at the beginning actually. Chris even read a definition. But you would need to go back to the first episode which is called What Defines The Sound Of Glam Metal if you want a longer explanation.
@ ok thanks
When I think of glam metal I think of a more specific sound and image. Best example would be Poison. I prefer the term hair metal, which is basically hard rock from 83-92. With that definition my big 4 would be Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Van Halen and Guns n Roses.
How about Firehouse?
Great episode...!!! But definitely Stryper is more metal than Glam...
I dig Warrant. Uncle Tom's Cabin is a great song and Cherry Pie is fun.
Do you not class Whitesnake as a glam metal band? They would be in my top 4
They predate the genre. It’s the same reason that Van Halen, Aerosmith, and KISS are not considered Glam Metal bands. They all released Glam Metal albums during the era but they predate it and were part of other genres.
Great White, Ratt, Whitesnake, Twisted Sister, Motley Crue, Skid Row, Dokken, Def Leppard, Poison.
No mention of twisted sister?
We did
I believe Autograph was another glam metal band.
What about KIX & Hanoi Rocks ? Both bands had albums out in 81. Great show guys. Cheers
We talked about Kix. 👍
HR are not Glam Metal, they are made up of the Stones and Dolls influences of rocknroll/punk. Often confused because of image.
Fantastic discussion. I am surprised that I have quite a lot of albums in this genre. Not sure if this band fits, but what about Autograph as part of glam? It would not be top four by any means.
Yes they were most definitely a Glam Metal band.
@@BrendonSnyder I thought of another band that night be a Glam band and that band is Helix.
Motley Crue
Ratt
Bon Jovi
Poison
That’s the definitive top 4 list of glam metal bands for me.
Honorable mentions:
Cinderella
Dokken
Skid Row (began as glam)
Guns n Roses (began as glam)
Def Leppard
Winger
LA Guns (sleaze glam and one of my favorites)
My personal favorites: Bon Jovi, Cinderella, White Lion, Tesla.
hell yeah, Tesla!
For me:
1. Faster Pussycat
2. Poison
3. Cinderella
4. Ratt
4. Tigertailz
Dokken,ratt, motley crue,warrant my big 4
I definitely think Bon Jovi should be included.
Bon jovi is pop rock, they are just getting the emotions of average fans of rock, glam rock maybe
Don't Forget Def leppard with Pete Willis:NWOBHM, LEPPARD With P Collen became Glam, he was in "Girl" a glam Metal band
Good analogy 🤘🏻
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
1. Guns n roses
2. Bon jovi
3. Def leppard
4. Motley crue
HM Whitesnake, Ratt skid row, poison
I think hair metal is kinda different to glam metal.
Mötley Crüe
Ratt
Poison
Twisted Sister
1. RATT
2. Dokken
3. Motley Crue
4. KISS
By my books:
#1: Guns N' Roses
#2: Motley Crue
#3: Poison
#4: Skid Row
Honorable mentions are obviously FireHouse (my personal favorite) and Bon Jovi!
As for who I call the godfathers, AKA the Sabbath of Glam Metal:
I say Kiss (for the look and lyrical contents), and second, Van Halen as Brendon said.
It must've been so awesome being around to really see Firehouse coming up, man they were phenomenal and I think they would've been huge had they hit the scene in '86-'88
Mötley Crue
Ratt
Cinderella
Skid Row
Although, they are all just rock n roll 😉
Poison-Motley Crue- RATT-Bon Jovi
If you go back to the originals I would go with Alice Cooper,Bowie,TRex and Be Bop Deluxe those are my big 4
Those bands are Glam Rock not Glam Metal so they’re not the “originals” they’re a different genre. The originals are bands like Motley Crue, Dokken, Ratt, etc.
Poison ,
Pretty Boy Floyd ,
Europe
Michael Monroe many Glam Metal bands changed their fashion and make up
Van Halen,Guns n' Roses, and Def Leppard are exempt in my opinion.
Also,early 80's and mid 80's are different.
Early 80's:
1.Motley Crue
2.Ratt
3.Dokken
4.W.A.S.P.
Mid 80's:
1.Poison
2.Bon Jovi
3.Cinderella
4.Whitesnake(yes, they were an offshoot of Deep Purple and had many albums, but many people didn't know that.)
1. Ratt
2. Cinderella
3. Dokken
4. Poison
Fun discussion. My big four rather than the big four:
1. KISS
2. Twisted Sister
3. W.A.S.P.
4. Poison
Love Bon Jovi but I file them under AOR.
Well you know my stance on Twisted Sister, Kiss and WASP 😂😂😂😂
@@BrendonSnyder Indeed, and I'm happy to disagree. Respectfully, of course.🙂
Poison, Ratt, Warrant & Twisted Sister.
Big 4 I think who created the scene, look and sound and were the pillars. Van Halen quiet riot Ratt and Motley Crue.
1. Ratt
2. Bon Jovi
3. Poison
4. Dokken
3 are quite clear to me - one is for discussion …
Mötley Crüe
Ratt
Poison
Warrant
For me Bon Jovi is a classic Hard Rock-Band - but not Glam-Metal
Guns n Roses is just rock n roll. Heavily influenced by bands like Thin Lizzy, so I dont class that as Glam. I think we are misunderstanding the word Glam in this topic.
The most glamorous band in the world has to be Kiss, but in the UK it was Slade.
Did no one mention Whitesnake?
Not the biggest, but my favorites would be The Dogs d'Amour, Hanoi Rocks, Faster Pussycat and Quireboys (first album). My worst: Motley Crue
Glam 4
1. Motley Crue
2. Dokken
3. Twisted Sister
4. Def Leppard
I can't believe nobody named Kiss. My big 4 is:
1. Kiss
2. Motley Crue
3. Poison
4. Def Leppard
We did mention Kiss and ruled them out because they’re from the 70’s and predate the genre.
@@BrendonSnyder But their 80's stuff was Glam. Missed that part though
I’m aware of the history of Kiss and the albums they made. It doesn’t change anything.
1 .Motley Crue
2. Ratt
3 .Poison
4.Guns N Roses
Another top 4
1.Bon Jovi
2.Cinderella
3.Kiss
4.Def Leppard
Big Four of glam needs Sunset Strip roots.
Motley
Ratt
Dokken
Poison
Quiet Riot started the whole thing.
My big 4 are motley, quiet riot, ratt, and dokken. I can’t put bon jovi and poison in there because I hate those bands with a passion! 😂
Sweet, Bon Jovi, Dokken, Cinderella
#1 Seduce #2 Ratt #3 Quiet Riot #4 Crue
Motley Crue in fourth place? That’s shocking considering they were originators of the era.
Bon jovi 1st 2 cds were awesome
Def leopard high. And dry and pyromania rule
🤘😎🤘
Cinderella
Ratt
Dokken
Poison
Britny Fox
Do you really feel Cinderella was the biggest band of the era and did more for the genre than bands like Ratt and Poison? I wouldn’t think of Cinderella as a top tier band. They were more second wave to me after the originators. But a great band nonetheless and definitely worthy of a position. They almost made my list.
Motley crue ratt dokken wasp that my list hell yeah 🤘
@@ThundersMcCoyI totally agree. I forgot to mention Mud also had a glam period with songs like Tiger Feet.
I never knew def Leppard was glam metal
They’re not…they’re a NWOBHM band that made Glam Metal albums.
Metallica: The biggest of the four and one of the first
I say the Metallica of glam metal is Motley Crue
Slayer: the heaviest and most aggressive of the four
I would have say Dokken is one of the heaviest glam metal bands and Lynch had an aggressive guitar style in comparison
Megadeth: chip on their shoulder from split from a big band and divisive vocal style
I think Frehley’s Comet is the Megadeth of glam metal. He has an interesting voice and just came out of KISS
Anthrax: east coast band and many people think don’t deserve to be in the big four
I think Twisted Sister is the Anthrax of glam metal. They’re from NYC and they had three well regarded albums and then dropped off just like Anthrax
MINE: Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, Bon Jovi.
NOT: Dokken, Skid Row, WASP or Def Leppard
Marilyn Manson's Mechanical Animals glam rock album is better than all the other bands put together.
I’m sure this doesn’t need stating but…Marilyn Manson is neither Glam Metal nor Glam Rock. He is industrial Metal which has absolutely no characteristics associated with either Glam Metal or Glam Rock. 🤦♂️
@BrendonSnyder Mechanical Animals is most definitely a glam rock album chief, inspired by David Bowie.
Crue. Ratt. Dokken. Bon Jovi.
Definitely:
Ratt
Dokken
Motley Crue
Poison
But not:
Van Halen
Cinderella
Guns n Posers
Def Leppard
Bon Phoney is questionable, they fell into glam like Leppard and looked more glam. I’d probably lean yes for Jon Bon.
New York Doll's
Hanoi Rocks
Sweet
