I bought one of these and I really like it. Worked great. Paid for itself in one project. Saves me from renting a tiller. Time saver. Yes, the cord is a concern. I find that throwing the cord over one shoulder helps me keep it out of the way and reminds me that it's there.
I'm not sure about that, too much saturation will make mud. However, I would agree that if you've been in a drought softening the ground would be helpful.

I think any kind of tiller would work much better and smoother if you soaked the ground a bit first.
