I played a good chunk of Kerbal Space Program. And I learned about that transfer
You and me both. I once researched actual NASA orbital maneuvers that would be useful in KSP, and that was one of them.
Me too
is ksp any good
BigC2323 There are a couple tutorials, and it takes a bit of practice, but it's awesome once you figure it out! Mods might help, too. (I would be playing it right now with KSP interstellar extended, but the core game updated three days ago, and the mod hasn't updated yet)
Same for me.
This is the most expensive how to video I've watched.
Right next to LinusTechTips
There is an epic how to series on AWE ME Channel... Check it out....
You saying the only thing more expensive to build than their gaming rigs is a space station? Seems about right tbh.
Todesnuss It was a joke about how insanely expensive some of the stuff on the channel was, don't take it literally.
masterman3349 I didn't. I tried to support your joke by joining in on you exaggeration.
Lots of struts, and boosters.
Refrence?
KSP reference.
Not working? Not fast enough? WE NEED MOR POWAAA! ENGINES AND BOOSTERS FOR DAYS!
+cyancoyote speed and power are the most important aspects of anything
There is no problem that cannot be fixed with the proper application of more struts and more boosters
1:20 I think I found a mistake, Thanks to KSP
No kidding.
Seriously, no one who's ever rendezvoused with anything in KSP could miss that animation error. It's _painful_.
Oh, and there's the fact that this animation depicts _two_ Hohmann transfers.
lol i thought the same thing
it would lose the volacity it gained from its tranfers, maybe we could call there new transfer the scishow transfer
It is amazing how much KSP has educated us in the ways of orbital mechanics... and i just realised a new update went live recently!
But my mods!
Kerbal taught me that two objects in the same orbit have to be going the same speed. ahhem 1:22
Simplified graphics.
:)
A minor Retrograde burn won't affect your orbit that much but it will give you a clean slow safe rendezvous and eventually, docking. But of course that's not the KSP way to do things. FULL THROTTLE PEDAL TO THE METAL
Instructions unclear, I may have accidentally caused a runaway Kessler effect.
See now, that was clever. +1 vertically extended pollical gesture for you.
Sometimes when my mom isn't home I like to go out into her garden, cover my body with dirt and pretend I'm a carrot.
I like to shove hard boiled eggs up my ass then shit them out and pretend I'm a chicken.
Same except I pretend to be a radish.
why did you comment that?
Well why did you comment this unreadable mess ("cuz scailaib eis sit") further up? I don't even know if it's supposed to be english?
I must've read that comment at least 6x just today... Are you looking for approval? Is the number next to the little 'thumbs up' button really worth your individuality?
I'm really hoping that space tourism becomes a thing before I die, I would love to go into space just once.
Prepare to be disappointed.
Such a downer
It is a thing. Hope you have a few million to burn.
Odin029 Such a realist. It's not depressing or pessimistic if it's reality. And the reality is, our species will die on this rock. There's nothing we can do to change that.
I don't thing you know what "realism" means...
Zarya - means "sunrise" in russian, and it makes sense, since this module have solar panels.
Zvezda - means "star", maybe because star gives energy for life?
Unity connects them both, obviously.
Guys, I know, this is an American thing to pronounce things how you feel like it, but come on, can't you do at least a liiiiitle bit of research about how some foreign names are pronounced...? What the hell is a zar-Y-a? It is za-rYA. The other one is not zv-E-zda, it is zvez-dA....And one of the recent cosmonauts is not scrip-O-chka, he is scr-I-pochka...
aight bro
0:55 Ley-go
I don't speak a word of Russian and even I winced at that. Key-boh was pretty egregious too.
Came down here to make the same comment
Yeah. I get pissed off too. When Americans try to say things like Zvezda they just butcher the whole name. Damn it!
Yeah just let me get my small loan of a trillion dollars
1:23 every kerbal player shakes their heads.
Literally 🤣
Do you the think the British astronauts all of a sudden just voted to leave the space station then spaced themselves with no space suit for no reason? #brexit
No.
lol.
In all seriousness 90% of UK scientists (not an exaggeration) wanted to Remain. UK science is now fucked royally.
Heh. "Royally". You made a funny!
I hope they didn't decide to leave ESA, since EU membership is not a requirement for ESA membership. Also, ESA membership has already proven to be highly valuable for British industry, and that value will only increase now that the first British ESA astronaut has been to space.
I think that Britain sends up only really smart people to the space station. That means that all of the idiots were on earth, queing up on the ballot stations.
Seriously how can you do a show about space stations and not even mention Skylab?
Do it by yourself a show of the space station.
Because russian created and revolutionized space stations.
When in doubt, SRBs,Struts, and winglets!
If that doesn't work, you havn't used enough.
Not enough Kerbal references. Also, I feel like her Hohmann transfer took too many burns.
Zarya is a Russian word, so it's pronounced a bit differently. It's not 'zarIA' like you said, it's actually 'zarYA'. Last two letters are spelled 'YA' as in 'YAhoo' or 'YAvin IV'. Though I imagine it might be difficult to say out loud for somebody who doesn't speak the language.
Cheers! :)
YARvin or YAHvin?
YARvin or YAHvin?
Boi
How do you open a door in kashyyyk with a woo-key
Why didn t you talk about Skylab?
cuz scailaib eis sit
wet
because it was inferior to Sylut's 5-7 and was much more expensive, and didnt really inovete much
Issc It really didn't inovate, the ones who inovated where Syalut 6 and 7, they had 2 docking ports and were re-suplyable, this meant that duration in space could be prolongued, Skylab was used 3 times, and 1 of those times it was just to repair it, sure it did some stuff, but nothing to remarkable
Issc in preety sure the space shuttle helped more than Skylab in that regard
For those wondering, mir translates from russian as "World" or "Peace"
And Zarya is "Dawn"
A-a-and zvezda is "Star"
Yeah, Caitlin did it again. nice singing voice ;-)
And obviously she got quite some sun during her vacation.
So a pink-haired bodybuilder that defended her homeland from the omnics is now just a storage room stuck in space? :(
No Overwatch comments yet?
Okay, I'm gonna start: Zarya hehe
_"They've even got a big robotic arm that can do work outside the space station..."_
Like most parts of the ISS, this part has a name. Unlike most parts of the space station, its name is verboten, or terrible doom might come to pass. It must never be spoken, written or typed, lest its presence summon the robotic arm's creators - henceforth referred to only as The Northerners - into one's comment section.
Even displaying an image of the name of The Northerners' land, indirectly and upside down, as a nametag attached to the robotic arm, can unwittingly summon The Northerners to make snarky comments about it below your video. Beware, my friends! Beware!
Canadarm 2
oh god you have doomed us all!
Its more then a testimony of Canadian engineering power, it is a testimony of Canadian sense of humour! What a _pun_ name!
Leopoldo Aranha not any pun its a spacepun!
One-Upping "Epic How To"? Well played SciShow, well played.
So, how DO you build a space station? "Well, you add on modules until it becomes a space station". That's basically what this video says.
1:19 that is misleading and wrong animation...
scishow arnt what they used to be....
I don't know what they used to be but I love them regardless!
How is it the wrong animation?
1. Things closer to earth orbit faster than things orbing at higher altitude.
2. when they pause animation for narration, earth keeps spinning.
3. at 1:22 Soyuz slows down, while ISS catches up.
4. many other things I am lazy to type, watch this... /watch?v=M2_NeFbFcSw
Ok... but why should we believe a guy in a pink dwarf's hat? You don't exist.
I love your wee smile. :)
Stop the football fields!!!!!
The plural of lego is lego, not legos.
is that french for the goose le' gos
There's a whole debate but I think I heard somewhere from an official source that the plural is lego, also if you say lego bricks as the plural what about lego technic that has parts other than bricks or bionicle/hero factory sets that have no bricks?
www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=69774
you care about this way too much
The plural for Lego is whatever the hell the common consensus is. Legos. The creators don't get to decide the common vernacular.
It's a trademark. The plural of the noun is what the trademark holder says it is, and LEGO say it's meant to be treated as a mass noun in English.
great information, but poor editing. will you please allow the slightest pause in between sentences?
What about NASA's Skylab 1973 to 1979?
it was shit.
Maybe so but it was still a space station
And with a huge living space. So big actually that you could run on the walls!
Spen Crowson i guess a shit space station is still pretty cool
makes me dislike her even more when she says zvezdA wrong
Hey, I have a cardboard box, scissors, duct tape... I CAN BUILD A SPAC-oh... That's a problem. 😢
hope this is not a dumb question but is the ISS being protected from some of the suns radiation buy earths magnetic field or it it to far out from the earth for that
Please dont stare at me like that, it makes me uncomfortable and hard to watch this
Skylab was not the greatest success but it deserved a place on this list.
wanna make your own space station? try kerbal space progam its a great game
Isn't the tiangon one out of control?
I have built many in Kerbal Space Program.
Thanks for the tutorial, i'm gonna try at home
With Kerbal Space Program, you actually can. And it's fun! :)
how to build a space station? piece by piece
Thanks now I’ll be able to go to space and build my own space station easily
kerbal space station, play it and you will know how
can we just build one on the moon already?
I don't blame you, and we could do that in the near-ish future, but we could just as easily build one in orbit around the moon or attach one to an asteroid. You know that asteroid that looks like it's orbiting Earth, but it's going to stop in a few hundred years? I'd be impressed if we brought it into a more stable orbit around Earth, then did whatever we wanted with it. But building a scientific outpost on or around either of our "moons" is good enough for me.
Joshua Slowpoke we could, but everyone's talking about mars.
Sure. Find someone to fund and build your project. Oh, that's right, you can't.
***** Russia is already making plans to build a space station on the moon. if the rest of us can get our heads out of our ass's for a moment maybe we could do the same.
RomrotMechanikos "making plans" HA. Come back to me if you see any real progress being made.
Little Russian - English translation:
Salyut (Салют) = salute / sort of a firework; Mir (Мир) = peace / world; Zarya (Заря) = dawn; Zvezda (Звезда) = star.
And by the way it was pronounced quite awkward :)
Thank you for the translations. Those are nice names.
Easy, Just get Kerbal Space Program
Spaceship buling 101
That's what I'm gonna major in
+Bronson Stephens then you shouldn't say "gonna"
+Cody Battery ugh. Fine! That's what I'm finna major in.
Bronson Stephens lol
Thanks for the history lesson now how is one built?
As a KSP player, I can tell you that the animation is wrong, especially the last move for the rendez-vous.
well, of course it was just to explain basically how it works, great video as always
"The size of a US football field" is not useful. Saying how many metres would be.
Yeah, it’s about 100 ish meters
Hey ferb, i know what we are going to do today
thanks, making one as we speak
They need to build a large spinning one with a stationary center so it could have a weightless environment as well as one with simulated gravity
Omg! Get rid of this girl please
Just get a big ol' weather balloon and a space suit and parachute and some hydrogen and float higher until it's considered space.
I just saw an article on Dezeen about a silk leaf research project involving the extraction of chloroplasts from organic plant material and to plant it into a layered silk material construction. It can then be used to convert light into oxygen.
The result is a manufactured product that can be used for long space travel and colonization, to produce adequate or abundant sources of oxygen.
This seems new to me. I noticed you didn't have a video about this specific topic although you have discussed the practical necessities of colonists on a hypothetical colony, like food, water, oxygen.
I noticed that you ran short on current technology that can be used to produce oxygen.
Could this be it?
No need to tell me how to build a space station Scishow. I've played Kerbal Space Program. I'm basically an expert.
>Not getting Scott Manley up in here. He is like the Neil Degrasse Tyson of space.
Oh wait... I guess, space, ships?
When pronouncing Russian words put the stress on the second syllable and push the first syllable into the proceeding word.
You'll still sometimes be wrong, but you'll be right a lot more of the time.
I feel like I should keep up my tradition of criticizing your Russian pronunciation, though the mistake is almost negligible this time. Anyway I'd like to talk about the meaning of the names mentioned.
Zarya has two syllables: Zar-YA. I don't really know why anyone would think the Y should be a separate vowel, but if it's a common pronunciation now, it's whatever. Anyway, Zarya (Заря) means "dawn."
Zvezda (Звезда́) means star. Mir (Мир) means both "peace" and "world." Salyut (Салю́т) means "salute" or "fireworks."
Yayy a Caitlin episode :D
No mention of Skylab.
Kerbal Space Program, the one game where you now realised has actually taught you how to make a space station using real world techniques and such.
Edit:
WAIT ONE DAMN SECOND! CHINA HAS A SPACE STATION???!!!!!
Um, what about Skylab. You forgot about Skylab. I think Skylab was very important, don't you? I'm sure NASA does. Yes Salut was first, but Skylab was more famous and had a long life.
Also, ALL orbits are elliptical, not circular. While an orbit may be very close to circular, they are are all, in fact, elliptical.
Interesting vid, but on an off-topic: Caitlin has Hermione-hair. If Hermione's movie-character were to be realistically presented, she's have hair the shape and texture of Caitlin's. Only longer and possibly dryer and therefore, bushier. I can't believe I never noticed that before...
I don't know if I'm correct, but I think Brazilian status of partner on the ISS project was recalled after Brazil failed to deliver in time the piece it should. Yeah, always late with things, the Brazilian way. So proud... not.
Not my proudest fap
What about Skylab?!
If I hadn't heard of Overwatch, I probably wouldn't think twice during this episode.
But I have, so when she says 'zuh-REE-uh' I snicker a little bit.
That Hohmann transfer animation was pretty bad. I'd really love to see you guys do a video about orbital maneuvers. Flying around in space is really counterintuitive. The first people to perform an orbital rendezvous were some of the best pilots in the world, and their years of experience didn't apply at all to orbital flight.
Hey SciShow! You want to get money from me for watching your videos? Don't put ads right over the videos! That's the sole reason I use an ad blocker! I don't care about ads off to the side of the screen, or even brief ads before the video starts, but when you put an ad right in the middle of the video, that's obnoxious!!!
fun fact, salut was designed to carry weapons .. and I think it ws 2 and 5 ? that did .. actually I think it was 2-5 .. .. or .. ahh just google it.. they monkeyed with a huge cannon and then a missile concept after that .. the cannon was actually a really cool design. and strapped into a bomber for testing and potentially self defence .. errr.. as much a a nuclear strike bomber can claim self defence as it penetrates western airspace to drop nukes on cities...
Well you got the basic concept of the hohmann transfer right. But it doesn't work just like that. Firsth you are in a lower or higher orbit. If you are lower you chase your target and if you are higher, the target chases you. When the time is right you match the apoapsis with the orbit of your target if you are in a lower orbit or match your periapsis if you are in a higher orbit. At the closest aproach you match the speed with your target any you are done. Also. What is ZarIa? It's pronounced zArja. Zvezda has a short and not a long E.
"Laygoes"?
"LEGO" surely?
Ask anyone, there's no "S" in the name "Lego" and the plural of one Lego brick is many Lego BrickS.
Well now i can build a space station{Mission Object:Manuever a 8 figure around the sun and earth(somehow),log:jeb crashed into kerbol}
For more on Hohmann transfers and docking, play Kerbal Space Program. You can learn learn orbital mechanics surprisingly quickly. :)
She does make me smile ... if you're having a rough day let this lovely lass envelop you in a touch of fun space trivia and you'll be happy long enough to reach Gin-o-clock...
Can we please send our astronauts some newer quad or octa core laptops? I know every kg counts but technology is lighter now. Imagine if it were feasible to have a server with 2 of the new 22 core Xeon processors in it running simulations and data directly in space.
That photo of the inside of Zarya is the cleanest I’ve ever seen it... I never knew it was white when they sent it up lol
"Zarya" is two syllables, not three. This is clear from the Cyrillic spelling, with only four letters, two of which are vowels: заря
The docking that the KSP teaches me isn't working, i'll just try to perform a Hohmann transfer, Also, great vid...
The plural form of LEGO is LEGO. Not Legos, LEGOS, LEGOs or anything else. LEGO bricks is also acceptable.
Thank god there was a video on this I was just about to build one but wasn't sure how!
I know that Kerbal isn't a proper simulator, but how would the module increase the periaps of its orbit AND slow down to the meet the space station? That doesn't seem to make any sense!
Can you guys stop using that cheap make-up on her face? Like literally she has a rash from it, her face becomes red where you put that damn make-up and clearly see it as around her eyes is her normal not red skin.
Brazil did not actually helped on ISS, it had promised to help but failed to deliver it. So now it's not a part of the ISS Consortium.
Hohmann Transfer animation is wrong here. The vessel moves with different speed than space station while being on the same orbit. That is not physically possible.
thats cool, lets just build one ourselves, I got a screwdriver, anyone wants to help, we just need some spare parts and a few billion dollars... rsrs
Oi why no give Canada credit for Canadarm?
Isn't it obvious?
+Chris Graves Oh no xD Am I unaware of some "feelings" for Canada? xD
+Space AIDs still help piece together some of the ISS
Space AIDs She spoke about it but didn't call it by its name or say anything about Canada other than when listing countries involved with the ISS.
Also kind of impressive was that they actually used one of the few photos that didn't clearly show "Canada" in nice big letters. Give the ratio of photos showing that and the flag, to the photos taken from angles which avoid it I'm going to go with "Good odds of it being deliberate".
Why hasn't the Kraken got to the ISS :(
Because struts.co
This is pretty late, but can you guys please debunk the "Helic Solar System" that someone posted here in youtube?
The rendezvous graphic needs to be revised as the smaller module would have remained quite a bit ahead of the station if it circularized when it was that far ahead of the station.
maybe the people who built it should speak, not the lady from the preschool🤣😂😅🤭🤫
Anyone notice the whole video that Caitlin's face was blushing?
No offense but this girl reminds me of an over energetic hamster. :P
Just remove asteroids from the asteroid belt, place them in Earth orbit & then construct buildings on them.
Salyut means Salut(duh) or Fireworks; Zarya means Sunrise; and Zvezda means Star.
ITS NOT ZARIA BUT ZARYA or the effect from fireworks exploading.
Can't you just do the transfer from low earth orbit ? why wasting time and DeltaV on getting to a higher orbit first ?
Step 3 or so might just should include not ignoring some major other examples of successful space stations
