Ok folks I'm really bummed I didn't get the chance to include my signature underwater lure action shots. The water shots are my favorite to shoot and edit. But I promise I'll make a short video just for the water shots. Keep an eye out for it...
Your paint work is amazing. I really enjoy your designs. I haven't made a lure for over 30 years and back then I used a pocket knife, a rasp and model paints with brushes. You have re-kindled my interest and I'm eager to start again. After I finish framing my workshop.
I know that lure is for northern lake trout, but it looks like a redfish magnet to me. Nice job. Keeps us informed as to how successful it is at catching.
Missed this one but saw the short and looked it up. Fortunately it was at the top of a playlist. Suggestion, include the episode number on the shorts or even a link to the original if that's possible.
That was a really nice build. It has a classic look to it like a collectible. I wouldn’t worry about the rattles….the rings rings will probably make noise in the brass when it’s running…
Hi Franco that was a nice looking bait will be interesting too see how it performs 👍 here's a question/request I was wondering if you could do, please could you create a larger sized jerk bait, glide bait and crank bait all from wood and then make resin moulds for them all & create some resin copies from them.... but finish all of the wooden & resin copies to finished lures, including weights, paints, top coats etc & show us how, why & if they perform differently between the wooden and resin versions of each lure, it will be good to see if the weight placements need adjusting or anything else between the wood & resin lure materials used 👍 would make a good short series to watch 👍👍
Just been in the shed tonight making your deep diving crankbait. Guess I'm building this one too now lol. Great job, looks fantastic. I hope the action works out for you, I'm sure it will. Cheers for another great video mate 👍
Siempre sorprendes, es increible, que con tan poco inglés que conozco, puedo entender fácil y rápido tus explicaciones, y, eso es grandioso, mil gracias y felicitaciones.
Fellow engineer and lure maker here…love your videos and the explanations behind your design choices. I’ve been struggling recently with getting the action right on lighter squarebill crank baits. They tend to want to blow out to one side or the other and no amount of adjusting the line tie helps. Is this more of a weight (or lack of weight) problem? Trying to make a balsa bait that will float quickly and be fairly light with a smaller frame…finesse style squarebill I guess.
As an engineer you know that there's rarely one answer to a problem. The biggest influence on a lure (hydrodynamically) is the bib. Adding weight can only help with stability a small amount. But a very light weight lure will expose and exaggerate any flaw in the bib angle and squareness. Moving the tie location close to the bib gives the lure a bigger movement and that bigger movement can help stabilize the lure (kind of like a gyro). But it wont fix a problem with the bib alignment. I would focus on the bib alignment. Good luck.
@@EngineeredAngler thank you! I also used a smaller bib on this one in an attempt to keep it higher in the water column. I will try using a larger bib and changing the angle more and see if that helps.
Franko, Do you have an all inclusive document for weight calculations that we can refer to? I understand Length x Width x Height = Volume, and the weight of a Centimeter = Mass, and how to add weight to equal the Specific Gravity of water... I can't remember some of the details you mention scattered about in many of your videos, like; compensating for the difference in buoyancy between saltwater and fresh, compensating for drilling out wood for the ballast, paint, and clear coat, etc. How much weight to add or subtract for slow rise/sink, and for fast rise/sink. I recall you mentioning 20% for this lure, but may not remember for long! LOL I may have missed a few other key points from not knowing or remembering, so a downloadable/printable document sure would be helpful and appreciated. I intend to give these calculations a try instead of the guessing method. Thanks!!!
I plan to produce some printed instructions...but in the meantime the coming video has a simplified version of the process that might be helpful. Cheers
Hello I love and enjoy seeing your fishing lure making videos I would wondering if you can talk about the luers you have on your wall I love Pier fishing 🎣 and luers 👍 I love this luer
Hi Franco, Greetings from New Zealand. In one particular fishing area here you are not allowed to use double or triple hooks and only 1 hook on the lure. Have you done any comparisons between single and double/triple hooks on your lures and action with only 1 hook? Really enjoy your videos and spend too much time making my own versions. Thanks and kind regards, Garth
Hi Franco, great video as usual. Here is a question that I’ve been tossing around for a while…. UV resin and the UV light needed, I use only alumilite epoxy now, but I’ve been thinking of going to a UV set up. Yours is quite Elaborate, but my question is, what power of UV light is needed for UV resin? Will the UV flashlight work, or do I need the rectangular ones that other people use? Is there a formula needed to find the right ratio? Thanks! 🎣🇨🇦👍🏻
Greetings from WV. Here is a question. When you seal the brass with clear coat, will that keep it from tarnishing and maintain the nice polish shine? Or does the resin cause a slow reaction to the metal over a long period of time?
Great video Franco! I have a question, how does the cross section effect the lure lure action? When is it appropriate to have flat sides and when to have rounded sides?
Good question! The cross section of a lure has to be taken from the view point of the fluid flow, so, perpendicular to the flow. The cross section perpendicular to the flow of the water can have some significant effects on the action. For most of us lure makers "round" really means more like an elliptical cross section and ellipses are pretty hydrodynamic, round cross sections less so, and flat sided with blunt ends even less. So you choose the least hydrodynamic when you want the lure to oscillate and the cleanest shape when you want the lure flow smoothly. Of course that is assuming we want the body shape to generate the action, not a dive bib or other dynamic element.
Frank…I troll for walleye on Lake Erie we use dipsy diver and lead line I have started to make my own lures ….do they need to be weighted if they are thin minnow type lure …help
I don't have direct experience with this type of fishing but I would check the weight of lures that are typically used and weight mine similarly. I would assume that the lure would be a sinking type or at least suspending.
Never thought of using metal in a lure except lead lures I cast myself. My question is, as you know I have problems with maths being dyslexic, is there an idiots guide to working out the maths that you do for density, weight etc. Many thanks
I too am an avid fisherman and an engineer. I have recently started making lures and have really enjoyed your content. A question I have (and a struggle I am having) is calculating the weight and I’m coming up with differing results. I’m curious what your thoughts are on how much of an impact the wood that gets drilled out for weights makes on the final density of a lure. I’ve tried making a cube of the epoxy I use to calculate the density of it to get a more precise overall density, but curious of your thoughts on this.
It depends on your process. I calculate the weight I need at the point when the lure is fully shaped and in its final volume. This way I'm adding weight to get a target weight and any material I take out just simply means I add a tiny bit more weight to make up the difference and get it to the target weight. As long as I don't change the body volume my calculated target weight does not change.
Cedar is great for freshwater lures. Easy to work and light. I've found that even with epoxy coatings fish teeth seem to break through and cause a water logged lure when fishing saltwater. Wood selection depends on the lure intent somewhat. Most of our native hardwoods are in the 0.625 g per ml range. Cedar I buy at the mill is 0.360 g per ml.
@Engineered Angler Lures not yet. I've got a bunch of milk jugs cut up in little pieces, but from what I'm seeing on RUclips about HDPE is that you can't truly "melt" it,, at least not to a pourable state of a liquid. It will melt to a very soft "moldable" state though. I'm guessing you would have to form a 1" square block to find out the density, then create another block to make the lure?? I have no idea how it would do with taking paint either. Sounds like something to explore,,,

Looking forward to seeing it swim! Very cool build.
Coming soon!
Now lake trout I know. Pretty cool bait theory.
Franko I love the design. I just made some ice fishing jigs using the brass plate and my leftovers will be used for making a lipless crankbait.

Only checked the difference in actio on a couple of lures that I wanted to go to single hooks on...didn't see much difference.
Very awesome lure!!
Great job, Great video++
Thanks 👍
The look of It reminds me of a bait strike king makes, the Hybrid Hunter
Hybrid hunter is a crankbait with a plastic lip. Looks nothing like this. Do you mean the paint job?
@@surfcat2051 reread my comment, but slower this time. You might answer your own question.
Nope.. still see no resemblance to the HH. no need to get your panties in a wad it's a legitimate question
Hi there, just an incredible lure making lesson!!!! Thank yo
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love this idea! Now that's thinking outside the box 👍🏻. How did it swim? Which line tie setting?

Good question....
Gotta ask, how close did you end up to 28g? With the epoxy and glue was the sink rate what you expected?
I'll cover that ...coming soon
Greetings from WV. Here is a question. When you seal the brass with clear coat, will that keep it from tarnishing and maintain the nice polish shine? Or does the resin cause a slow reaction to the metal over a long period of time?
It will protect it from tarnishing but anywhere it gets chiped, you'll have tarnishing.

How big of a consideration is local forage for you when building your lures?
It's a big consideration. That's why you don't see me making giant lures, or tropical fish, or othe novel lure styles.

I have the same WEN bandsaw. Which saw blade are you using on it?
I alternate between 1/8 inch and 1/2 inch, depending on the type of cuts I'm making. I've been using the Boch brand blades....they're excellent.
Rapala Rap V-Blade ? Looks like it

most things made with HDPE is made by pressure injection into metal molds. That makes it a bit difficult...
Cool bait, but bamboo is not wood. It's grass. You made a lure out of metal and grass, which is a far more unique accomplishment.
I guess you're right😊
