- This lure build is a tricky one. I use a single continuous hinge to get a fluid swimming action from this swimbait. But things go wrong along the way.

As complicated as this lure build was, and as many hurdles as it presented, you adapted & overcame each one and came out with a lure that looks and functions better than those imported, mass-produced ones. Thanks for showing the struggles, challenges, and mistakes, I certainly learn more with those perspectives than from watching everything fall perfectly into place, and in the end have more admiration and respect for the process and the person! Keep up the great work!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have to say that this is my favorite video of yours. I am a retiree who has been making lures for a few months, and this has made me feel ok with my mistakes. I think you recovered on this bait perfectly. It's a true beauty. Thank you Marco!
I'm glad you're enjoying the vids. Cheers Marco
It's funny how everytime I ask a question on this lure building group on facebook everyone always mentions the engineered angler. I love it. Keep the videos coming ur teaching alot of us.
That is always super satisfying to hear. Cheers.
One of the best gill paint jobs I've seen👍🏽. Great action what a deal. I'd love it in a croppie pattern too. Great work Franco.
Thanks 👍
Well done... One thing that I learned the hard way is that on smaller lures where weight has to be precise, u need to acct for paint and clear coat weight as well....
The most realist swimming motion I have ever seen in any lure. Great job and you should mass produce it or at minimum make mold before you loss it to a gar. I would love to have one if you make duplicates. All the Very Best! Jim Rodgers
Thanks, I am planing to make a mold but this will be complicated
Awesome job! Thanks for the video I think a through wire assembly on the front section only would solve the problem of the front hook hanger! The action was beautiful
Hola Franco, es muy genial tu forma de explicar, tienes alma y vocación de presor. Que genio gracias por la dedicación.
Gracias Juan Carlos
this may be one of the best swimming lures i have seen. @20:49 the action looks almost like it's fanning a bed.
Another amazing build!
Another amazing video,, bloopers and all!
But it's much more difficult to learn about what you're doing if you don't ever make mistakes!
Noted!
The action on that lure is awesome! Well done!
I love it!
I never really thought about the difference between salt and freshwater and how a lure is affected by it. When the package says "floating" it doesn't say if that's in fresh or saltwater. Same with suspending baits. Now I want to see how both kinds of water affect the same baits.
I love the fabric hinge idea. I wonder if it's tough enough for commercial lure production?
Love that you show your mistakes. The sign of a true craftsman is he knows how to fix his mistakes!
This one is really engeneered!! The final result is galactic, and having passed through all that troubles make the result even more satisfying.
Bravo!!
Franko that was an amazing build!!!!! Excellent skills brother,
Thanks man.
That's a complicated build. Really nice paint and action. I would tie direct if possible, that clip/snap detracts from the realism. Let us know if you get any slob LMB on it. Hopefully you will cast some resin copies cause losing that would be painful. Great job.
Really nice! I gotta say I was as concerned as you were for a bit. In the end the action turned out spectacular and no doubt it will get slammed
Thank you very much!
Great build, that cloth is a great place to add scent.
That lure turned out great! It swims perfect. I think it was awesome that you included the mistakes and how you overcame them too.
Glad you enjoyed it!
great vid franco love the sail boat mesh idea
Awesome work as always. I really hope to see you try making a mold version. You can control everything much better. Hardware that "paper clips" around the fabric, weight strategically glues in. You could even use other materials over the fabric tail section after casting, like mylar or paint and uv resin layered to thickness. I think you really nailed it.
That would be cool
Love the action on this build.
Hi Franco, really good to see the build- fantastic action! Have you thought of using the plastic wraps that often come around heavy deliveries for the hinge? Should provide the flexibility and strength you need but is narrower, so you wouldn't have problems with weight placement and hook hangers etc that you had with the sail fabric. Maybe easier to insert into wood or maybe cast the body around??
I think those straps are too rigid but it's an idea.
Thank you Franco.
Stellar work. Very inspiring and innovative.
For me, the best pattern you ever made!
Wow, thank you!
You certainly put yourself through to wringer on this lure but it turned out extremely well and looks good both in the water and out
Thanks
Nice work on this one! Might have to try that out myself just to see if I can pull it off. I did notice that some of the store bought ones that have this type of hinge use more of a mesh fabric so I’m curious if something lighter weight like the fabric I use to paint scales (the mesh liners I cut out of bathing suits) would work too. Might be too weak of a material but worth a try I guess
What a cool paintjob. Im a big fan…..A color i just bought was wicked detail black magenta. I think you could have used it nicely with the colors you used. Thanks for sharing. The bait came out awesome
Thanks
What a great looking and life like lure. You are truly a great lure builder!!
Thank you so much 👍
Hi Franco
Thank you for this video!
Here, in Denmark, we fish a lot for sea trout and one of the bait fish is herring. I´m planning to do something similar like this hinge but to a smaller bait (3 inch herring). My main challenge is to find a suitable hinge material that is flexible enough to allow maximum movement of the individual low mass body parts. In other words the hinge material can be to ridged and not allow a fluid swimming action on a slow retrieve.
If you have any ideas for a suitable strong and flexible material, I would love to hear them - or see them in a future video 😊
I like the sail cloth it comes in many different weights.
That lure turned out awesome!!! I love it!!!
Thanks 👍
Will you please make another continuous hinge lure, but casting it in resin, like you said? Thanks for content!
I am planning that one...
That's got to be one of the best swimming hard baits I've seen looks great ..awesome job keep up the good work awesome channel 👏
Thanks 👍
That turned out so well, thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for watching!
Great couple of videos, loved the process, and the challenges, i am working on my own topwater snake jerk thing at the moment using a woven fabric strip threaded through the 3d resin printed body sections. I am just painting and assembling the stage and wondering if it is going to work.If it swim anything like yours i will be more than happy, great underwater shots as well
Thank you so much Paul. I hope to see this "thing" in a video soon. I'm sure it will look amazing, knowing your skills. Cheers.
Now THAT was an adventure! Turned out great!
So do you make a bunch more fabric-hinge baits and optimize the process or chalk it up to a learning experience and use a simpler hinge design that swims as well?
Being a glutton for punishment, I'd make another 1/2 dozen of the fabric-hinge style - they swim beautifully!
Cheers and a great weekend Franco!
P.S. I'm jealous of your spring weather :) There's still ice, snow and below freezing temperatures here.
I'll make one that has a more "universal" bait shape and create a mold. Then I can make them easier than the pin hinge lures.
The lure turned Amazing with an awesome action. I don't know if I could have pressed on or if I would have scrapped it and started over.
I have a bunch of swim bait blanks that utilizes the belt strap between segments. Most of them have crazy good action to them. Will be interesting to see you catch a few fish on it and then check the action to see if the pull from the fish altered the movement
Did you test the strength of that hinge before making the lure? Beautiful lure and action.
The sailcloth has a tensile strength much higher than anything you really need but the real question is how strong the epoxy bond is?....
Might have to do a test.
That slightly faster sink rate will probably allow for cross over duty in the salt. Turned out quite nice in the end.
My thoughts exactly...
Beautiful build, flaws and all!!! 22:26 I would still like to see this lure in action!!! God bless!!! Chuck Knight. 👨🌾✝️🙏🖖🦌
Thanks 👍
Beautiful lure. How much of a difference does the wood that you removed for the lead make in the calculations? Do you adjust for that or is it too little to matter?
Too little to matter...most of the time.
Awesome lure!!
Awesome color!! I'm going to try and color match you in an open pour soft plastic.
Awesome great video ++
Thank you! Cheers!
When you cut the bullet sinkers did the weight change?
How does the paint change the weight?
Could you have drilled into the sinkers to reduce the weight before painting? (adjust buoyancy)
Then plug holes with same wood?
You should do workshops like the old ceramic's classes.
Great Video! I'll be quiet now.
Hopefully Franko will share his experience, but I will toss in my 2 cents:
Cutting the sinkers in half with a knife would not reduce their weight, but when using a saw it will remove a blade's width worth of material in the form of sawdust and slightly reduce their overall weight.
After paint dries it will lose most of its weight and will be so insignificant that I don't consider it. Your clear coat(s) will likely have more effect on the specific gravity of the lure.
I have had to drill out lead to adjust buoyancy on many occasions, because I attach different amounts of weight and do float tests before drilling. When drilling out wood in the lure to make holes for the lead, it loses some buoyancy which means it now needs less weight and I don't always guess correctly.
I usually don't drill into the lure far enough to accommodate a wooden plug, so I'll normally use a thin layer of epoxy or superglue & baking soda to cover.
All great questions MichainaFisherman, and I too look forward to hearing the answers.
All good questions....
What an awesome paint job you did on this!
Thank you! Cheers!
I think I'll save this one for next winter.
Amazing work! Very nice.
Thanks a lot!
New subscriber. Nice job. Never give up ... Never surrender! I get a kick out of the sonar pings on the submarine views.
Awesome! Thank you!
Magic work again
Hi! Such a nice build, thank you for all the background information and knowledge. Here's my question: I recently built a quite similar swimbait, but when I was sawing the joints between the parts, I accidently cut the angles the wrong way so that the bulging part was in the 'head-part' and the indenting part is facing the direction it is moving in the water. I haven't finished the lure yet but keep asking myself which effect it might have on my lure.. Will it alter the swimming action to none at all, make the action unmanagable or even have no effect at all? I don't expect the last since it will certainly increase the resistance, doesn't it? I would love to hear your scientific evaluation :)
This will change the action from the same exact lure made with the joints open to the rear. But, lures are so different and there are so many variables that its hard to say what it will do to your lure. Typically it will create a less fluid motion and have the action mostly at the first joint. This is because the first joint is usually the biggest and now will create the largest turbulence with the backwards joint. Good luck.
That came out fantastic!
Thank you! Cheers!
Amazing craftsmanship.
Thanks
Have you caught anything with it? To me that is the mark of success. I enjoyed watching.
Not yet!
very well done!
You say water temps don't effect the ROF of a lure. Do you think that with resin glides that could be different? From my experience with making my glides I feel there is a different in ROF with water temperatures from 37deg to 65deg. Again I would love to see you tackle more resin glide style lures. Your knowledge and being able to integrate math into this is addicting to watch! Thank you!
The biggest variable is always the builder. We always do something just a bit different on each one...more sanding less sanding, temperature during casting, etc...
@Engineered Angler Lures I agree that's its impossible to made 2 resin pours the exact same way. I just like picking your brain. I would love too see how you tackle a single joint resin glide!
Nice job! do you think it was worth the effort?
Yes...one time.
Great job brother 💯
Thank you so much 👍
Wow man, strong work!
Appreciate it!
Great job 👍🏼
Thanks!
man, I was aching for your new video... at this point I only have one succesfull design but I wish I could show it to you. Its a 55g long casting pensil designed for seabass fishing, especific for medium to heavy surf here in Portugal, and its a huge hit, caught a bunch of seabass with it, people are already talking about it in the local tackle shop. I would love to share it with you (as I already commented on a prev video) it was in your channel that I learned most of the geeky stuff, which to be honest is the good stuff. I have a question, what do you think about galvanized iron for the arness? I have been using 1mm stainless steel and I wanted to change to 1,2mm, but sometimes with this diameter I can only get galvanized iron
or zinc steel, do you think its ok to use this?
really nice action and paintjob on that swim bait
The galvanized wire is excellent for twist eyes it holds strong.....you might see some rust after a couple of seasons.
@@EngineeredAngler ok thanks. will try I few then
Excellent work ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you
Very beautiful Lure
Thank you very much!
Have you ever thought about using blue jean material fur fabric jointed luer I thought about it and I think it's cool idea
A thin canvas or denem would probably work.
Awesome lure, but after that effort I'd be double and triple checking all my knots after every cast!
You and me both!
Cool lure
Thanks!
What do you do when you hang this thing up and you can't get it back and you lose it?
Make another one...after throwing a fit!
if i mix 4 ounces of resin do i add 22.6 g of microballoons is this right.
Wow! That must be a monster lure. 4 ounces? I assume 2 oz part A, 2 oz part B. That would be about 57g of total resin. 10% of that is 5.7g
@@EngineeredAngler yes its a 9 inch glide i want to be able to pour the front and back half at the same time.
Franco can you or have you made a wake bait like the 6th Sense Fishing Movement 80wk Saltwater Wakebait. It's designed to walk the dog by itself with a slow retrieve. It says it is engineered with a counter-balance weighting system
I'll check it out but the counter-balance weighting sounds a bit fishy.
@@EngineeredAngler That was my first thought as well so that's why I asked I did buy one just to check it out (but haven't tied it on yet) if it works my wife and kids can throw it and don't have to learn to walk the dog. but the videos I've seen look great
How do you decide whare to place the led in a lure
Lots of videos on my channel that cover the topic....check them out. If you're still looking for more info, ask again.
It is amazing
👍👍👍👍👍
Month late on my comment Franko
But I think it's cool bud!
Thank you
