  • Gen George S Patton speaking at stadium rally bays in part..."You who have not seen do not know what Hell looks like from the top. That is what Germany looks like, what Austria looks like" etc. The general refers to his plane trip over the demolished countries of Europe. He continues and says in part..."We have kept from America, so far, the horrors of war... This war is only half won. You must finish the rest of it... Goddammit it's no fun to say to someone that you love, "Go out and get killed"... This war is only half won," he repeats. "By God you cannot, you will not be unfaithful to the men who have died and those who have been wounded...".

Awesome clip of the General. My father served with Patton both in the '30's before and later during WWII. The Old Man always said, "the S.O.B was a tough commander but the greatest tactical general the US had at that time." After we watched the move Patton together Dad made the comment that it was a pretty accurate portrayal... except, "They sure cleaned up Patton's language!" What a character.

When I was growing up, one of my neighbors drove Sherman tanks under Patton's command in the Third Army. He was a recipient of a Purple Heart and the French Croix de Guerre. Since I always had an interest in the military and World War II history, he was kind enough to share stories with me over the years. He absolutely adored General Patton and would have driven his tank directly into Hell to fight the devil if General Patton commanded it.

He said he was being as horrible as he could. War is about as horrible as it. Unfortunately there are times when it is necessary and general Patton has earned the right to be horrible about war. I firmly believe he was being very honest, a characteristic that is sorely missing today. God rest his soul

Patton was the best military commander even other than his counterpart Rommel in WW2.

When the military started to prepare for World War 2 in 1940, most officers over the age 50 were retired. I had been in the Army starting 1965. I had asked a retired colonel who was 65 if he was called back to duty, would he go. He said, "Yes, but if they took me they would be taking from the bottom of the barrel. War is a young man's game." In 1940 there was a handful of older officers who were not retired. Patton was one of them. It was because of his military knowledge and also he knew more about tank warfare than anybody else. He was eventually promoted from colonel to 1 star and kept on going. He did a good job of taking Casablanca that later he replaced Fredendall of 2nd corps and kicked the Germans out of Africa. Then he went onto the Italian campaign and he was outstanding.
When he was relieved of duty in Italy, the Italien campaign lost and never regained it's momentum like it had when he was in charge. Him being relieved caused a lot of American casualties. He was later put in command of the Third Army in France, and moved in a highly successful drive across France which helped to shorten the war and save American lives.. In his entire military career he only lost one battle. He shunned staying in the back and ordering his troops to move in. He was always in the front to see what was going on.

It's not hard to understand why Patton used colorful and intense language. His voice is not one that would initially indicate authority. Still, one of the greatest military minds.

@@raymondmiller5098 No, certainly not the military performance--though Orange Man was in fact Commander In Chief, and thus Patton's superior officer. But as far as success, Orange Man held a general 's rank, as it were, in the NYC real estate shark tank. Rather, I refer to their common upbringing--spoiled rotten rich kids with extravagant ambition and absurdly opulent taste in clothes, bling, horses, boats. And more--much more--is their uncanny similarity in public speaking. And in this is also reflected the strikingly identical thought patterns--basic train of thought. A big difference is that Patton was an avid reader, while I honestly believe Orange Man has never read a single book in his life. And not to digress, but I think he's STILL much better than Gibberin' Joe and Kamaltoe.

@@raymondmiller5098 No, I mean the way he speaks and thinks. Patton of course was an avid reader, while I seriously doubt Orange Man has ever read a book in his life. Also both men were of identical disposition growing up--spoiled rotten rich kids with outrageous ambition as well as absurdly opulent taste in luxury items, etc. For his part, Trump held a rank of general, as it were, in the cut throat NYC real estate world. And not to digress but despite his venality, his being a bellicose bully, a bloviating buffoon, and a Carnival Barker on his best day, he's STILL much better than Gibberin' Joe and Kamaltoe.

@wehaveasituation Incorrect. Odious Trump is a 34-count convicted felon who is also an anti-democracy, authoritarian, pathological liar, proven sexual assaulter (E. Jean Carroll case), whose primary business skill over the years has been to declare bankruptcy. Why are you such a groveling apologist for this thorough piece of excrement?? (You're likely just a Russian bot. Case closed.)

@@wehaveasituation WTF!?!? Trump is NOTHING like Patton and it's a complete insult to compare the two men. One is a narcissistic sociopath wo thinks of no-one or anything except himself or what's in anything only for him. He is a liar and dishonest. He is a convicted felon, a tax evader, and a sexual offender who squandered his millions of inheritance from his father. On the other hand, Gen, Patton loved his troops more than himself and one of those was my father. Patton was honorable, honest, held the USA in his highest regard, a REAL PATRIOT, a REAL leader among men, brutally honest, of the greatest integrity, a great field commander. Comparatively, Trump a pathetic imposter.

When I look at George C. Scott who played Patton, I see a big man. When I look at this man, I see a wiry man. His voice is not that of a big man. His demeanor is not that of an impressive and charismatic speaker. But I can sense that he would be a tough fighter, of the type of dog that would never let go if it bit a limb. And I would not count on him to play fair. He is not the player type. He would be all business, and half of it more than required. That's the kind of man who would burn Georgia twice for Lincoln, and kick ass so hard that the tail bones would be heard to crack. This is not the kind of man that you want anywhere in your life. Except if you need him to drive tanks into hell night and day, and bring some back.
