I am a 65 yr old lady and will be buying a tab 302s travel trailer. This was very informative for me and took away of lot my concern about dealing with black and gray water dumping. I will be doing most of my traveling alone too. Thanks so much and keep up the great work!
As an extra precaution for your fresh water..... connect the ends of the white hose together before putting it in the white bag. Hose will stay cleaner by keeping out any foreign objects, insects, etc from getting inside of hose.
We screw our ends together too. Keeps bugs and dirt out. I get so grossed out to see how people will throw their fresh drinking hoses on the ground. Nikki from Gone with the Wynn's was one that did it and I was shocked! But that was normally Jason's job that she had to do when he had to fly home and leave her to solo with the rig. LOL
as a woman I find watching you do every part of the dump station educational. so many r.v. channels don't show the details or a woman actually doing it...you do. thank you.
Very educational video. I've gone from listening to fear-mongering Alex Jones since January of 2020, thinking everyone is hunkered down at home, til' last week, when I started binge-watching Your amazing travel channel. I can't wait to retire & live a similar lifestyle. May God continue to richly bless You & Your beautiful dog !! @19:36
Enjoyed your video. Some advice for you. When filling your freshwater, you should always let the water run through the pipe before you insert it into your tank. The reason, bacteria. When you store your freshwater hose, there is always going to be some water residue left in the pipe. Two weeks is long enough, for bacteria to grow in this residue. So if you insert the hose straightaway and then turn on the freshwater, you will transfer this stale/bacterial water straight into your tank. Hope this helps.
Hi. I understand your logic. But that is not such a good idea. Closing the ends off, with water residue inside the pipe, is a perfect breeding ground. For legionnaires disease. You can look it up online. Especially during the summer and autumn. That's why it is paramount, to flush the pipe out first, before filling your freshwater tank.
Graham King, True about Legionnaires disease, someone in U.K recently died from Legionnaires just by inhaling spray from his garden hose that was left lying in the sun for a few months without use.
Great tutorial. A note: on some RVs the tank plumbing is not the best. Leaving both tank valves open when flushing the one tank can possibly contaminate the other tank. I was taught "Drain black tank, flush black tank, close black tank valve. Drain grey tank, flush gray tank, close gray tank valve".
Thank you for taking time to make this video. It does help take a lot of fear out of it. You did a great job and I think you do have good habits, and you've probably improved your dumping process since this vid. Through your comments you showed that you are grateful for the suggestions of others. No one does everything perfect, and we all can improve, even those who ripped you for a few things. It takes a lot of courage to open up your life to all types of attitudes and personalities. You have a smiling, happy, upbeat demeanor and I admire you. Wishing you the best and be safe, always!
Just put a despoit on my first RV, a Class B, so this video was so helpful. Driving a big RV? Not a problem. Camping alone? Not scared at all. Dumping the tanks? Total freak-out. Thank you for the best practices video - really nice.
I have nursing background so I watched for errors with the gloves on. you showed us that when you connected the black hose to the rig outlet that a little leak got on your gloves. Nurses always wish germs would glow purple so you could see everything you touched thereafter. not being mean here but love you enough to want to keep you healthy. 1. you kept pushing up your sleeves. 2.you went inside, must have touched camper door handle to open door. 3. possibly touched hand rail as you stepped up. 4. bathroom doorhandle. 5. if the lid was closed you may have opened toilet lid to watch the flush. I hope it had a footpedal. 6. touching more handrails climbing down the back steps. 7.after dumping gray, you said you go back in and run water down the kitchen sink. more icky on camper doorknob and hand rails, now icky on sink knobs. 8. using your arm to rub your nose or brush hair from your eyes is smart. so gloves didnt touch your face, except for when you contaminated your arms earlier pushing up your sleeves. gloves cannot keep you healthy if you Dont have good habits.
Thank you! I'm going to assume that Carolyn changed to new disposable gloves several times off camera during the filming of this video, but if she didn't then I hope that your comment helps keep her safe. But the real reason I am thanking you is for being a nurse who has good habits! It's scary, but I've met a few who don't.
Dear Judy R. I am an old RN. I thought of every step that you mention abovere: contaminating other surfaces. Gloves are expensive. I would have a container/ basin with bleach & dish liquid soap handy to wash betw. steps.[And I betcha Carolyn did too].
We keep a large container of hand sanitizer in the dump bay to use on the gloves if we have to do another task. Also bleach in a spray bottle spigot and latches with.
I am looking at class C's right now I can't wait to be free, me and my handicapped will be hitting the road in the near future.. She just loves camping and always has and I love nature and being able to get away from people. I am Native American/Irish mix but raised by my Native side of the family so do know a lot on survival.. But learning a lot form you also.. keep up the good work....
Great video! My wife, to this day, won't touch the sewage system in our travel trailer, and we have been at it for almost 15 years! I agree with everyone here about not twisting the handles, they will just fall off. Also, they are connected to blades that close off the drain lines. They should be easy to slide in and out otherwise replace them. Also, to be totally sure the black tank is clean there is a clear, 45 degree bent fitting from Valterra that connects to the sewer line before your hose that lets you see what's coming out. Gross, but effective! It also has a water attachment that lets you back flush the black tank from outside the rig while you are at the dump station. I swear by it, I think the name if Hydroflush, but deffo from Valterra. Keep on going, hopefully we will see you out there in 3 and a half years when I can retire! Capone can meet our doxies and give them a run for their money!
2013 I watched videos before striking out with my 1995 class C after 3 years of having a guy who did this dirty job. I became convinced that I must have the Rhino hose and connectors to avoid some of the very horrific breakage and splash situations that were described. Problem was that the larger hose and connectors would not fit into the hose storage slot. SO I got a 6 inch round pvc pipe (with screw-on ends) and with some creativity had it attached to the back bumper. It was the best improvement that I had done and was SO glad that I did.
I am so thankful for your generosity in sharing your knowledge of RV life.! I've often wondered about those tanks. Going to the Chicago RV show next week to look around. Hopefully, I will be on the road by this summer/fall. I have a notebook full of notes I've taken while watching your videos. So grateful that you have taken the time to make them.
👍 😃 This was super helpful. I've seen men demonstrate this on YT but seeing a woman demonstrate it certainly helped dispel my personal doubts, hesitation & concerns. Wishing you the best. 🤗💞🤗
Great demo on black water and gray water dumping.. these videos are so important to newbies on the road with RVs and campers because where you buy your camper from, they don't take the time to really discuss it in length that you can grasp it and remember it all so thank you for such a detailed demonstration. Sincerely, Shay's Ways
Carolyn, for your kitchen sink you can buy a strainer made of window screen. If you replace the one you showed with one of those it will stop most solid particles. You can buy them at any hardware or home center. When they catch particles just tap it into the waste can and no more particles. Works great !
This was so helpful. I just went on my first camping trip with my two daughters and I watched this video before attempting the tank dump. Easy peasy! Thanks, Carolyn.
Carolyn as an FYI, I think I git this from one of Bob's videos. Get a spray bottle and put in a mixture of bleach and water to spray the faucett and the ende of your water hose before filling your fresh water, just a precaution...
Oh my gosh. I found you on RUclips last night. I watched your posts till I fell asleep in my chair. I’m pretty much home bound due to arthritis and some other stuff. I simply love what you are doing. Capone is delightful and what better company? Looking forward to your next post. Thank you for letting this old lady live vicariously through you. Stay safe and happy travels.
Carolyn you are a fantastic teacher. I don't live in or own an RV but after your demo I know I would be able to dump the tanks. Who knows, maybe someday I will be with friends who own an RV and they'll wonder how come I know how to dump the tanks!
As far as you stretched your hose I cringed a little when you pulled the black valve LOL Great video, only thing I would add is test your hose and connections with a quick/brief release of about 5 gallons from your gray tank first, this will ensure all your connections are good and if anything is going to break or slip at least it's with gray water and not black! Don't ask me how I learned this ;-) Been full time for the last year and have learned a lot during this winter for sure, watching your vids (jealous) with 20" inches of snow outside right now, definitely be there next year! Cheers
Can't thank you enough Carolyn for taking time to make this video for us 'newbies'. (Still hate that word). You are an amazing woman! Love you! Take care and please stay safe! And thanks to Bob too!
Thank you! Having a bathroom inside seems like a safety feature for a single traveler. I just found your channel and am binging your videos. I just turned 50, have survived Stage IV Grade 3 cancer, and I am ready to LIVE! I'm taking care of my 97yr old grandmother and 76yr old father. I slept beside my mom until she took her last breath 2yrs ago. God bless you! 💝🙏💕
Thanks Carolyn. A lot of good information that I did not know. You helped me with my "RV Poop-a-phobia" issues. I will admit, that did make me steer away from an RV with a toilet. I use a composting toilet right now. A dog's life is so much less complicated.
I enjoyed your video on dumping your poop. Very informative. I am not raving yet just recently bought a class c and plan to start my adventure in 2 years. I am following your raving videos and really enjoy then thanks Ron
Carolyn, thanks for the teaching video. Some comments below are rude. I for one appreciate the watching/teaching experience. Thank you for your videos. They do help.
Appreciated your video Carolyn. I very quickly get overwhelmed and can't assimilate new info (esp tech stuff). You have a way of explaining things in such a relaxed no fuss no muss manner I find it easy to take in. Thank You! Laura (Ditto for the video you did on operating the Big Buddy and connecting to a larger tank with a special hose and filter.)
i like how you used a black bag for the sewer hose and white bag for fresh water hose and that you keep them separated .nice video. im new to rv's and this video helped me alot. thanks
That was the #2 video from my #1 RV dwelling RUclipsr. I gotta tell you. I'm flush with excitement. Thanks for giving us the straight poop in this very important topic. You've unleashed my inner 10-year old! LOL
Thank you for this dump breakdown! Looks so much easier than I thought. And great tips for hose management.Your videos are so helpful and detailed and not over technical.Thank you for sharing the ins and outs of your adventures.I can't wait to get out there. You're a great inspiration!Happy safe travels Carolyn .
Good job Carolyn. Thank you for showing us how to do it. My husband always did this job, we had 7 RV's throughout our life and I remember that is how my husband did it.
Carolyn, I can't thank you enough for making this video, you're awesome lady!!! Please, always stay safe, stay free, and if you find the blues coming on just remember "the sun'll come out tomorrow" and if it doesn't you can put the key in the ignition and go find it, and some beauty too along the way.
Very helpful. When I was younger it might have bothered me but after 20 years of picking up nice, steaming dog piles, that would be very easy. I would worry about the valves breaking at some point just because I've had problems like that before but at least it wouldn't be a super expensive fix.
A very energetic person ( cheerful too) to take on these RV -related chores by herself. I don't know if I would want to do it all solo - especially when you might get sick. Thanks for the tips, should I ever use them.
Just a thought Carolyn other than a great and informative video. I also when finished with the fresh water hose not only make sure all water is out or the hose but I also connect the two ends. Just because you keep the water hose in a white bag doesn't necessarily keep dust, debris, or bugs out of the open ends especially when the bag isn't sealed. Not critical just an extra thought on making sure your fresh water tank is keep super clean. Thanks again!!
Thanks Carolyn, seeing this video takes the "scary" out of the dreaded black water tank. Thanks for sharing! Been watching you and Bob for a few months now. Sure want to get out there too! Love your. Videos and Bobs also. So much info!
WOW, what a great video! So helpful to a newbie,,so nice to see it done on an older rig, like the one I got...so many show shiny new class A's! Thank you
I live in my rv,and had a problem with pyramid of toilet paper stuck in my black tank, however that happened bc some genious left the valve open and that caused that to happen. If u want to we don't put any toilet paper into our black tank. We just throw our toilet paper away in the garbage it's no worse than throwing away a dirty diaper. This just prevents clogs which is no fun to deal with in the RV. But thank you for showing me how to do this on my own. Woman power. Great job
Having worked in a municipality in the wastewater department for many years, I don't get too grossed out when it comes to emptying 'poop' tanks, lol. Thanks again for another great video! Happy travels to you :D
Thank-you so much for the excellent presentation! Special thanks to the competent cameraman. I bought a Class C last November and I haven't done a dump yet, because it is winterized. I now feel confident of the inevitable task. michigan
Thanks Carolyn. I was always leery of those tanks, and hoses, etc. But for some reason, watching YOU do it seemed okay! Take care & enjoy the rest of your boon docking. My warmest regards to your camerman, Bill. He is amazing! take care~
So wonderful of you to go through such an in depth instructional demo for those who are new to RV essentials! Great video! Thanks and may you continue enjoying your RV life in total freedom!!!
Love you and your videos, we live in our huge mobilehome in fla, large lot, lots of woods, no mortgage, 70 yrs old. no close neighbors, two dogs, my cat passed. Next best thing to what you do! If you come this way you can hook up and visit!
Hey Carolyn, great video. You might consider two suggestions... a clear elbow at the RV connection lets you know when the black tank is truly empty of debris, its a bayonet fit like your hose. Also you might consider a spray can of lysol for the water connection before you connect your hose since there are folks out there who are kind of sloppy or just don't care how they handle dump stations, right? Happy Trails! BTW- Sees candy is great!
I used public/campground/truck stop restrooms most my travels as both the campers were to small to have a bathroom. I always carried a portable folding camper potty with plastic bags for extreme emergencies. I did use the water tank but always flushed my hose out well before collecting water into the holding tank.
Ok, so thank you and I love you. Best video Ive seen this week on RV/Campers! Just the exact video I was looking for and you covered the whole subject beautifully! Thank you for being to the point cuz I loose focus on any one subject. Lol, again, Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! I am planning to get a rv in the future and this is one of the things I worried about. I planned to ask the person I purchased the rv from and just suck it up and look like a idiot. Now I can ask if it is any different and not look so stupid! You are a angel! Love the videos!
I am a big fan of using a back flushing adapter. Saves going inside and out, and is able to put in more flushing water quicker. The simple Valterra Hydroflush, or models that have a slide valve to close the hose when filling the tank. With the Hydroflush you can lift the hose above the tank level to fill, then let it down to drain.
Im in the military and i do exactly this on aircraft. Everything is very similar. Down to the T handles, the process, waiting for potable water to overflow, and everything. I cant wait til i can get out and start my RV life style. Its like life has took me in this direction and down this path to end up here. How ironic huh? Lol
Thank you! it's no longer a mystery to me what to do with poop and how much it would cost. I have been dreading work more after watching your amazing Alaska videos looking forward to the next video I can tag along with you to keep me sane. Dreaming of boondocking during my hour drive to and from work always left me with the same question, " How does Carolyn get rid of poop, trash and get fresh water?". Thank you
Thanks for this....I am a newbie with an Airstream Basecamp. The dump station was the most intimidating part for me. I’m all ready to hit the road now w/o worries. Safe travels to you 😎
GREAT. wonderful job and informative as to how it is done. I have not done this yet but I hope to be doing some rving soon. thanks for the video. tell Bob thanks for holding the camera. It was so wonderful to see the two dogs hanging out in the cab like they were getting ready to go somewhere. Joyce
Thx for this. We all have our little bits of perfectionist and there is always someone we could do differently and that's ok just as Carolyn's way is okay too. I love to see the dogs together. Thank you for showing them. Cody was very good. :)
Always learning something new. Thanks for sharing your easy routine. I have a Class B Winnebago Sprinter and it has been a little difficult to dump the tanks with the lower clearance to the ground. Might need to try some leveling devices next time. Can't wait for the next video Carolyn!
Thank you for this demonstration. A nice big pair of ”clean” (not sterile) rubber boots that easily slip on would be great also. Keep in a black bag and use before walking into dump area If they're loose enough - they'd be easy to slip off outside the camper door to run in. I like the idea of 3 pairs gloves on each hand. Also hand sanitizer! Also PLEASE make sure there are no leaks - anywhere! It IS possible, you just have to take your time. In a pinch cover your shoes with Walmart bags!! 😂👍
Thank you Judith Robertson...Also, I know someone who said that he wiped his forehead with his gloved hand after emptying his tanks and ended up getting ecoli that dripped from the sweat on his forehead into his eyes. He developed ecoli in his brain as it spread through his eye. He almost died. Was in ICU for weeks.
thank you so much for this video. I was so uneducated about RV dumping, and I'm gonna build a tiny house and was thinking of toilet options. RV toilet isn't as scary as I thought:)
I so do enjoy your videos. everything I have seen from you is very informative and your instructions are easy to follow. Your Joyful Attitude IS Such a Pleasure. Take Care...Tuck
Great video. I hope to live in a motor home asap. Thanks to RUclips and persons such as yourself who take their time to share their lives with other "friendlies" I am learning as much as possible until I am able to make that leap of faith. Enjoyed both the valuable information and your sense of humor about the subject. Dawn
I would only rotate the dump handles clockwise. On some valves there are some threads on the shaft that can unscrew. Turning it a little clockwise keeps the threads snug. At least with the various valves I've had over the year the rotation isn't normally required, but it doesn't hurt as long as it it clockwise. Rotating it counterclockwise can unscrew a shaft extension if there is one, which is common if the valves are up inside the arctic insulation. If the valve doesn't pull easily it would be prudent to lubricate it, or replace the valve. Don't take chances with these valves, a failure or a stuck valve can lead to a bad day. Many RVs have a hose connection for flushing the blank tank that leads to a jet in the tank. You can get a grey colored hose to help keep it separate.
Thanks for doing this video, it a great reminder to keep safe. Also good for beginners. I also learned so good tips from comment's. I will now make a few changes to my routine.
I started watching your videos again and glad bc I was always scared of getting a motorhome for that reason but the way you explained it in your video seemed so easy and I'm sure I can do it also tyvm for video!

Nice how to vid. If u lubricate the shafts u will not have to turn the handle. Use a 'dry' lubricate so dirt does not stick. Turning is just to free up the shaft from road grim. Mite help if u place one hand on the slider bracket/body and slightly push forward as u pull on the handle.
I've had a Class A and a Class C, I just pulled on the Valves to release water, Never seen any unscrewing ? Never touch your sweater or face with dirty gloves. :)
Your videos are so much fun to watch and so informative. Even though I live in a house I like learning new things every day about how others live. Thanks for sharing 💩
Awesome tutorial -- I want to thank you so much for this easy step by step process. I admit I was a bit freaked out by doing this. We just bought a travel trailer and will be making our first mini trip this coming weekend.
So that back storage bay is just for dirty items associated with the black and gray tanks? Is that correct? Otherwise everything in it would be a cross contamination nightmare. For me anyway. But that's my personal issue. I would be decontaminating that hatch after I used my dirty germy gloves to close it. I know bacterial exposure is good for the immune system but not really ecoli. Again, that's my personal issue. It was a very helpful video. Thanks.
Use whatever you like, Lysol, pinesol, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, whatever you research and choose that can be stored in a spray bottle. I would take outside with me when doing the emptying. Like I said. That's just my preference.
hi Carolyn. Great video. Not sure about the gate valves you have but my RV manual recomens that you spray wd40 or similar on the metal shaft once or twice a year. mine open and close with little effort after doing that. No twisting needed. thanks for another great how to video.
I am a 65 yr old lady and will be buying a tab 302s travel trailer. This was very informative for me and took away of lot my concern about dealing with black and gray water dumping. I will be doing most of my traveling alone too. Thanks so much and keep up the great work!

We have screw on caps with very tiny holes on the end of our hose. Lets air in and icks out.

Nikki from Gone with the Wynn's was one that did it and I was shocked! But that was normally Jason's job that she had to do when he had to fly home and leave her to solo with the rig. LOL
We do put bleach in our hose too. Good idea about the wipes. Somebody said to spray it with Lysol, but that has to sit a while to kill the germs.
Great tip Candy and John, thanks!

A very good instructional video. Learning all I can in preparation of the day when I have my own RV. Thank you and blessed journeys.
Good idea but bleach solutions fade over time they should be mixed often.

💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥 Wow!!!!!! Thank you. First time I've seen this done in all of my 4 years of watching U Tube!!!!! You get the prize!!!!!!
Cheers
Another great tip!!! Lots of them here. Thank you!!!
I used to be SO scared that I would not be able to dump black & grey tanks but thanks to you I know I can do it. Thanks again Carolyn, safe travels!!
Can't thank you enough Carolyn for taking time to make this video for us 'newbies'. (Still hate that word). You are an amazing woman! Love you! Take care and please stay safe! And thanks to Bob too!
Glad to see the puppers having so much fun. Ignore the haters. Enjoy life & love.
My husband has always done this job for our family on vacations, but I am happy that I know how now!
LOL
First :) AWESOME Video Carolyn, keep em up
Thank you for this dump breakdown! Looks so much easier than I thought. And great tips for hose management.Your videos are so helpful and detailed and not over technical.Thank you for sharing the ins and outs of your adventures.I can't wait to get out there. You're a great inspiration!Happy safe travels Carolyn .
Tracy - yes, it's pretty easy! Glad you found the video helpful!
Good luck and thank you for watching
I use ice to clean my empty black water while driving.
This was FABULOUS - thank you! Dumping the tanks always seemed intimidating to me! Still does..but less itimidating and more doable :D
Great explanation!! I've changed my sons dirty diapers that were pretty bad, lol. This looks easier, it doesn't squirm .
now you know how it is done easier: just connect him to the septic tank with a hose ;)
oh my gosh!!! how funny! ty!
Thanks, a much needed video Carolyn!!!!!!!!! Every detail already worked out.
Thanks Carolyn I’m a newbie at this and watching this video was exactly what I’ve been looking for.
Carolyn, thank you so much for your videos.
They are so educational, a joy to watch, and make
me feel brave enough to do the RV life!
VERY HELPFUL! Took the fear out of dumping black and gray water
Thanks Carolyn. That was very informative. I love step by step's when someone is trying to teach something. Makes it super easy to understand.
Lol
Great video Carolyn a must watch for people just starting out...
Hi Carolyn and Capone that was easy tanks for the video
Good infomercial. You gotta take care of it one way or the other. Thanks for taking the time to show this. Very good video.
Thank you! it's no longer a mystery to me what to do with poop and how much it would cost.
Joyce
Very thorough demonstration. Thanks, this is an important part of of living in an rv.
Wow, so simple! I think I can do this!!!! Thank you Carolyn! Changing lives, one potty at a time! ❤️❤️❤️
Nice job explaining the procedure. I use a filter when filling the fresh water as well. Taste is important as well.
Thank you for doing this video. I haven't done it too many times yet so it's just sort of reassuring to watch someone else do it.
I so do enjoy your videos. everything I have seen from you is very informative and your instructions are easy to follow. Your Joyful Attitude IS Such a Pleasure. Take Care...Tuck
Tuck, aw you are very kind. I am so glad you enjoy watching and being a part of my journey. thank you!
Thanks for the excellent tutorial! This was the best how-to for dumping Ive seen.
Good to know! So much information I can use when the time comes. Thank you, Carolyn.
ahhh yes.. the pleasure of doing everything in front of the camera! It's amazing I'm even alive! LOL
:-p
I know, right? LOL funny !!
Great information, it's that easy. Love it!
Your videos are so much fun to watch and so informative. Even though I live in a house I like learning new things every day about how others live. Thanks for sharing 💩
Thank you for posting this video. it was very helpful
Hi Carolyn and Capone, thanks for another informative video. I always learn something new....
Happy trails
Excellent information that every RVer should know. Thank you !
hi Carolyn. Great video. Not sure about the gate valves you have but my RV manual recomens that you spray wd40 or similar on the metal shaft once or twice a year. mine open and close with little effort after doing that. No twisting needed. thanks for another great how to video.
Thank you for showing this, pull out and turn push and turn these simple instructions help me as I’m new to this and insecure .
Girl your great! Not many people think to tell others how do do this kind of things! Please keep it up. thanks! 👍❤️🐶
You made it all look so easy. Wonderful vlog!
Very interesting. Have never seen this process being done. Thanx.
Just what I wanted to learn, I love your video's Carolyn
