- Hiking The North - South Track of the Kaimai Range.
This 82km track crosses the length of the Kaimais from SH29 to Karangahake Gorge.
DOC recommends 5 - 7 days for this trip but I like a challenge and had to get back to work so I decided to hike it in 4 days.
The weather mostly played ball for this epic adventure and I enjoyed every second I was out in the bush.
Distance Travelled (Approx):
Day 1: 23km
Day 2: 20km
Day 3: 27km
Day 4: 12km
This video shows Day 1 & 2 of my trip.
Day 3 & 4 will be coming soon!
More information about this track can be found here: www.doc.govt.n...

Cheers.
Awesome footage
@@moanauerata-jennings1158 Thanks 😊
Sickkkk. Watching now
Appreciate it bro 👊
Great watch bro. You picked the worst smelling hut toilet I think I've been to haha. Zeb from the future cracked me up
Cheers bro. Yup there are definitely better doc toilets.
I had to make sure I got the pronunciation right haha.
Thanks man
Good to catch a glimpse of the tracks in the Kaimai Ranges that I haven’t seen for so long. Such awesome walks right on our back door step. Cant wait for day 3 & 4. Good job mate.
Thanks alot Bryan. Yup there sure are a few gems hidden in the Kaimais.
Cheers
Came across your gem of an upload well done mate, you should proud. The peace and quiet of the bush is almost deafening sounds stupid but😊 true. All best.....Rob
Thanks Rob! That was a great 4 days out in the bush.
Thanks for watching!
You set cracking pace. Very enjoyable vid
Thanks heaps Ian. Had to get back in time for work haha
Loved this video scenery and rivers are so beautiful. Glad the weather cooperated. I like how you challenge yourself and enjoy yourself. Can’t wait for part 2
Thank you! The north south track had been on my list for a long time.
Cheers
Well done man!
Really impressed
Thanks a ton!
Cheers mate!
I enjoyed watching the video and wonderful place for a trail, I'll wait for the second episode.
Thanks! It's a pretty awesome area for sure.
Cheers
You packed super light there bro! Nice tent! This is why u got no vids last week :) worth the wait!! Cheers!
Thanks alot Jet! Always appreciate a comment from you man. Yeah I'm pretty happy with my loadout for longer hikes, not ultralight weight but definitely lightweight and a whole lot lighter than what I'm used to carrying! Everything worked great aswell.
I'm glad it was worth the weight, I had considered slapping something together but I think quality over quantity is better.
Cheers mate.
@@BackcountryKiwi wondering how you prep for a trip, great content for me, especially I will be going on a series of hike this holiday, driving from Auckland to Welly with some stops in the bush tramping! Looking forward to the next part, but no pressure! keep it up bro!
Very good, thank you.
Cheers mate
Enjoyed the vid. Looking forward to part two.
Cheers mate.
I appreciate it mate.
Thanks alot.
Cheers
Thoroughly enjoyed watching, really felt I was there in the beautiful bush too. Can’t wait for part 2.
Thanks alot TJ.
Cheers mate
Fantastic video. Enjoyed the bush views and all the stream crossings. Mate I think you are feeling tired on day two, because you are not eating enough. Light snacks mostly carbs and very light dinners. Please pack some more food with you haha. Looking forward to part two and great job again!
Thanks Adam. I'd have to agree with you on that one, on the 3rd day I made sure to eat more food more frequently and I felt alot better. I think the heat got to me a bit aswell.
Still figuring out how much food I actually require, it's a bit of a learning curve, especially when I'm doing 20+kms a day.
Cheers mate.
Sweet Trip Zeb. Cant wait for Part : 2 i was Hoping to see some flint and Steel Action. 😁👊💥💥💥💥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🪵🥓🪵 maybe the next days. Fantastic Area. Nice Huts. Great view up Top. And The creek looked crystal clear. AWESOME BRO.😊👍🤘👏👏👏👏👏😊👊🤘🥳🥳 seen a couple of polypores on this trip.💥💥💥🤘😁👊
Thanks alot Jason! Unfortunately there was no flint and steel action on this trip. You aren't allowed fires in the Kaimais.
I've been messing around with it at home though, I'll send you a video tomorrow.
Thanks again for the flint and stuff, I really appreciate it.
Cheers mate.
@@BackcountryKiwi man Bummer No Fires in the Kaimais. Awesome Looking Area. Thanks bro.
Wicked vid bro. From Perth Western Australia
Glad you enjoyed it man. Cheers for watching!

I would have to agree with you 🙂
Thanks very much.

Quality content as usual. Awesome mate
Thanks alot man 😊.
It's appreciated.

Awesome te reo speaking Zeb. Highlights have to be taking a dump and the chocka DOC longdrop. Just gold e hoa ma. Thanks a lot for the great times.
Thanks Dani. I'm struggle with some pronunciation but I try to get it right.
Haha I'm glad you got a laugh out of that.
Cheers man
Dude, I've semi-planned to do the North-South track solo but I wanted to use huts so I wouldn't have to carry shelter. Do you reckon it would be possible to tramp a day from Te Whare Okioki to Motutapere Hut? It's a long section. What are your recommendations/ tips now that you've done it?
That's awesome man!
That's a pretty big section to do and you will have some decent climbs and rough terrain.
I'm not trying to dissuade you, if you think your fit enough to do it then you could give it a shot but I would highly recommend taking at least some sort of shelter (like a small tarp) incase you can't do it in a day and have to camp for the night.
I hope that helps,
Let me know what you end up doing.
All the best.
Cheers
Great post as usual, BK! Just wanted to send along to you a tip on naming your posts, the title of them, with regards to getting more hits. If you had named this one "Solo Hike - New Zealand, Kaimai Mountains, 4 Days" I think you'd probably have about 10K more views! Regardless, thanks for posting another fine adventure. Cheers.
Thanks Rick.
I appreciate the suggestion, it's always a gamble deciding what to name the videos haha.
Cheers mate.
New sub....lovn ur vids .......keep up the good work....✌️👍🇺🇸
Thanks alot Johnny!
Really enjoyed the video, can I ask what tent you are using?
Thanks Andrew.
You sure can, it's a Tarptent protrail.
Cheers
You’re making great time. New gear? mic, shoes, tent, hoodie. Do you like the mics?
Cheers Dave. I've used the hoddie on a few trips but the shoes and tent were both new on this trip.
The mic set up is different to what I'm used to but I think it will work well for hiking trips, it's a bit fiddly at times but I think I'll get used to it.
Thanks for watching.
Great to see you doing the mahi and doing big hikes. You look like you’re ready to take 4 months off and do the TA? 😀
How did using the hiking poles go? Loved watching your trip so far. Looking forward to the next video.
Thanks Ally.
The hiking poles worked pretty well, I'm not used to hiking with them and in the thick nz bush they can get in the way sometimes. They are great on the wide open sections.
Cheers.
Awesome video, look forward to the second one.
Where did you get that squeeze tube from? or is it how the peanut butter comes?
Thanks man. They are coglahns squeeze tubes. They come in a 2 pack and are super handy for my peanut butter.
Also thanks alot for the suggestion about the hydrapak seeker bottle. I ended up picking up the 2 L one and I'm carrying it in my pack. I didn't use it on this trip as water sources were abundant but it will be handy for when I have longer water carries.
Cheers.
Awesome video. Looking forward to the next part. What time is getting dark there now? It's dark by 4:30 right now in the northern hemisphere.
Thanks Michael.
It's summer here in NZ now so it doesn't get dark until after 9 and it is light by 5:30.
Cheers
No.1 Priority: Salt! Gotta have the salt!
Yup! That's for sure.
Cheers Tony
@@BackcountryKiwi Cheers Bro 😎
Cheers Zeb yet again…
Thanks Jackson!
Hey mate - What an awesome adventure. What tent is in this video ? Seems very compact ? Cheers
Hahaha seen someone else asked - Love the videos man
Thanks alot Rodney. Yeah it's pretty lightweight and packs down nice and small. Super easy to set up aswell.
Cheers
What tent is that?
It's a TarpTent Protrail.
Cheers man.
Nice video bud. How heavy was your pack for 4 days ? Stay safe have good Xmas cheers ian
Thanks Ian. My base weight (including all my camera gear) is around 7 kilos.
With food and water I'd say it would have been 9 or 10ish.
Cheers.
Nice weight. How much water U carry 10 kg is good weight on back. Diffence between 10kg and say 14 kg is huge esp when climbing steep bits. Good on you Do 80 K 4 days. you should save you $$ come walk some Bibluim track here in WA starts in Perth Goes 1,000 km down to bottom western aust I've walked good 250 km it. Happy to take U bud. Have good safe Xmas
@@iantooke3549 Thanks Ian. Water sources were abundant on trip so I only carried 1 litre at a time but I do have 2 litre hydrapak flask (bottle?) aswell so I can carry up to 3 litres if need be.
Hiking in Australia is definitely on the list someday.
Cheers.
Is this whole track well marked
Hi. I think I just replied to you on ig haha. Yep it's, pretty well marked. It is a backcountry track but lots of orange triangles. Cheers
