  • Gastrointestinal (GI) stasis is a potentially dangerous condition in rabbits, where muscular contractions of the stomach and intestines are reduced and normal bacteria in the digestive tract become out of balance.
    If left untreated, it can be deadly.
    Knowing the signs of GI stasis is essential in restoring your rabbit’s health. If you notice these symptoms, contact your rabbit savvy vet ASAP.
    Do not worry, Cinnabun has made a full recovery and is feeling great!

    IMPORTANT! WONDERFUL TIP OUR VET GAVE US WHEN OUR BUNNY HAD GI STASIS: Our vet said to make sure to give our bunny a little bit of fresh pineapple everyday-- not canned and not dried, just fresh. He explained that fresh pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which helps break down substances like the fur that rabbits ingest while grooming. That was when our bunny was about 2 years old. He passed away at 13, and never had GI stasis again.

      Thank you for sharing! My girl loves pineapple so that's definitely good to know. Will probably Incorporated occasionally to make sure she's not getting too much sugar

      U can have simethicone baby drops/coliza or colicaid in the first aid box of Ur bunny and give 1 ml after every 1 hour for 3times., But still take your bunny to vet. It is just first aid to give Ur bunny some temporary relief. Wish u and your pets a happy and healthy life❤❤.

    My seven year old lop, whom I’ve had since she was a baby, started experiencing drooling and lack of appetite-my bunnies have their own bedroom and free roam of the house when we’re home. Rue has never been caged and is a family member who spends mornings and evenings with us, so I noticed right away something was going on with her. Our town does not have a CT scan that’s equipped to do bunnies so our vet called WSU and we traveled there. Not too far out of the way, approximately 150 miles give or take. Rue was diagnosed with bilateral malocclusion of her molars and a right lower jaw abscess. Her treatment was subcutaneous PCN injections every other day with oral pain medication every 6 hrs, critical care feedings 4 times a day, repeat CT Scans every month. WSU explained her life expectancy may be 6 months-one year; however, they didn’t know my dedication or that Rue is my best friend. That was 2 yrs ago. Her SQ penicillin injections are now one a week-abscess is very small, which is great because in rabbits it never fully goes away in malocclusion teeth-her pain med is as needed, her CT scans are every six months, and because she has trouble chewing hay, we started a junior rabbit Timothy hay pellets. As long as she can eat-and she loves to eat her greens and pellets-and continues living her best life with Rocket (a miniature blind albino rescue bunny) who is her soulmate, I will continue helping her along the way. She literally is my $20,000.00 bunny and I thank God that if she had to adopt anyone, that it was me she picked to adopt. I appreciate your videos, educating the public on bunnies as pets. They are very precious but require a lot of time and attention. Peace and Blessings 😊

    One reader asked for more specifics about giving the bunny pineapple to help prevent GI stasis, so I'm going to add my reply here so that everyone is sure to see it:
    Here's how we did it: I would cut the pineapple into quarters lengthwise and cut away the core. Then I would slice each quarter into 1/2 inch thick slices and cut away the rind, making sure to remove all the spiny bits. I would give our bunny about 1/2 or less of one of those slices (so that means about 1/8 of a complete pineapple ring), cut into little segments. We'd give him his pineapple as part of his pre-bedtime treat of fruit. His "fruit platter" would consist of the pineapple plus one or two other fruits, such as a cut-up strawberry or two, a few blueberries, a cut-up slice of apple or melon, a few mandarin orange segments (checked for pits, of course), etc. He adored his fruit platter! He would sit expectantly at the kitchen entrance waiting when that treat time drew near. And when it was ready and we started carrying his treat to his room, he would race round and round our legs all the way or tear down the hallway alongside us with his dear little head turned sideways the whole time avidly watching its progress! We rarely gave him banana or grapes because of the high sugar content. I know there will be some who will object to the nightly treat of fruit, but we did not give our boy any other kind of treats -- no commercial pet goodies. Just two generous platters of fresh veggies and 2 Tbsp of "crunchies" (Oxbow rabbit pellets) every day (breakfast and supper), and lots of fresh high-quality hay. Just make sure you buy a nice ripe pineapple, one that has lots of yellow or golden colour -- the green ones are really sour! And if the pineapple has really soft spots or smells fermented, don't buy it. Now that you know exactly what we did, I'd like to emphasize that this routine of ours just kind of evolved at our house -- I don't imagine it would make any difference if bunny were to have the pineapple at a different time of day. I hope all this is helpful to everyone!

    Rabbits need salt in their diet people! we do too

    • @Cheezitnator
      @Cheezitnator 4 месяца назад +2

      Lack of salt is not the problem. You don't need to give them salt unless the vet tells you to. They can't vomit so all the fur they ingest from cleaning themselves has to pass through. It can form a ball and get stuck causing stasis. It's an emergency situation so a vet visit is imperative.
