This is sort of a long story. In the mid to late 70’s I drove Limos in Los Angeles and Keith Moon was a client and we drove him a lot. Keith was called, “Moon the Loon” and I can verify this as true. I received an order one day to go and pick up Keith In Van Nuys, CA and to take him to his home in Malibu. The pickup point was at a Jewish Synagogue. When I arrived Keith was dressed in a German Army Uniform goose stepping his way on the sidewalk in front of the Temple. Thankfully no one was around to catch his craziness and I drove him to Malibu. Shortly after that the US Government quietly asked Keith to please leave the country. This was probably in ‘76 or ‘77. In 1978 The Who released their Who Are You album. They came to Los Angeles for a release party at MCA Records located in Universal City, CA and I was to drive Keith. My orders were to stay with him 24-7 for the 3 days that he was in town and told not to drive him anywhere that he could get into trouble. For a total of 54 hours I stayed with Keith at his home in Malibu and did as I was told. I left him at the Los Angeles International Airport and that was the last time that I saw him. Shortly after that he died.
@@bikerguy5829 I beg to differ my man. We drove Keith for a couple of years and then he told the owner of the company that he had been asked to leave because the US would not renew his visa. When he returned in ‘78 he was reluctantly issued a visa and it was full of stipulations which is why I had to stay with him the whole time that he was in the Los Angeles area. I picked him up from LAX and dropped him at LAX 60 hours later. When he lived on Trancas beach he used Starlite Limousine service, if Mr Butler drove him that may have been in the UK or other places. Call BS all that you want but I had the joy of driving Keith on many occasions while I was employed at Starlite.
@@bikerguy5829 That may be so, but I never had any dealings with him whenever I drove Keith. There were a lot of hangers on around Keith and I never socialized with anyone other than Keith. I had general conversations with some of the people around him, but unless they were well known I remember no names. In the mid 70’s when I drove him Keith was hemorrhaging money and the owner of the Limo company kept cutting off his service. To repay the his debt he gave my boss a big screen TV and a Rolex watch to bring his account current. When he left in ‘77 he still owed the Limo company money, the owner filed a claim with his estate after he p[assed but I do not know what the outcome was. His last time in Los Angeles he was by himself except for some friends dropping by.
I always thought Roger had the strongest determination of all rock frontmen. His performance in the Tommy film is amazing. He is a captivating speaker and (I would imagine) rather impressively intimidating when pressed.
I wouldn't pick a fight with him lol. No doubt the toughest guy in Rock. Also a versatile singer who can do hard edged rock and beautiful ballads. Thanks for commenting!!!

Saw The Who at the old Boston gahden. Two songs into the show Keith falls over his drum set, out cold. The curtains close. About 15 minutes later roger comes out and says they’re canceling the show because Keith was “Ill”. About 6 weeks later they came back. Keith came out center stage and took a bow to a standing O. They played for what seemed like three hours. It was awesome
Nothing quite like blowing off 17.000 people. Great story, but egregiously unpro. I assume the following show was "free". Hopefully they showed a little class and comp'd everyone a free t-shirt or somethin.....well I kinda know they didn't.
I was at that show. They had a laser light show, first of its kind. I was peaking on my drugs, then it happened. Of course everyone thought it was a gag,,then out the door we went. I believe it was april fools day they returned.
John - I'm 65 myself and know exactly what you are saying, but I often think that exactly the opposite is the case for me, i.e. it was the fact that I've always been lucky enough to have had a good job and earn good money that has kept me from being an acoholic or addicted to other drugs.
At 61 I couldn't agree with you more. I was a train wreck with two nickels in those days. Millions.....would have gone poorly for me as well. Great point!
I can still remember seeing an interview with his daughter Mandy where she recalled Keith punching her mom right in the face and she came crashing down to the ground. So dude had issues some of them very dark, and that's sad to think that drugs and booze led to that. By those standards he's no hero, but he was a gifted flawed rock star that burnt out just at the beginning of his decline. He just barely died before he got old, made it under the wire of the forever young club. He painted himself into a corner with his lifestyle and need for attention, aging was going to be truly rough on him had he not passed. It was going to get ugly with the Who, no way he could have toured or anything like that, so he was just about spent when he bowed out. There wasn't much music left, we got just about all he had, he left it all on the field as they say in sports.
Interesting. Glyn Johns' autobiography describes sessions where Keith could not do the parts. Glyn asked Keith to quit drinking for a few days and Keith said, "Well why don't you quit smoking?" Glyn quit smoking that day and never went back. Keith did not quit anything. Glyn describes various anecdotes about Keith that he says, "sound amusing unless you were there. The pranks were violent."
A strange coincidence - Keith Moon and 'Mama Cass' Elliot (of the Mamas and the Papas) died in the same bedroom of the same apartment in London, four years apart. The place was owned by singer Harry Nilsson. He subsequently sold it to Pete Townshend of The Who.

PR firms 'handle' all publicity matters regarding their clientele. Cass was also reported depressed and it is a part of underground Hollywood knowledge that she was a regular at Sharon Tate's Cielo Dr residence and was first to come upon the early morning carnage. ….and I remember walking past there as Keith’s body was being stretchered out, never forget THAT…..he was always to be seen in the pink Rolls with the tv ariels in the roof, both before & after his short time in the ‘White House on the bend in Old Park Ridings’ .
Keith could be cruel, charming, sweet, giving, manic, depressed and tortured too. I would not have wanted to live his lifestyle, but I am glad he lived amongst us, albeit for a relatively short period of time.
I've heard that repeated many times about how wonderful he could be, but those very same people would tell you about a very different Keith Moon on other occasions...
@@PatriotSteve There was a press conference for the movie TOMMY that the WHO had just made and everyone was busy avoiding talking to any of the press or guests. But Keith Moon was very friendly to everyone and I approached him with a request. A friend of mine was under the weather and I asked if he would say a word for her. He grabbed my little tape recorder and delivered the sweetest message to her. Needless to say she couldn't believe he'd done that.

Actor Larry Hagman was a next-door neighbor of Keith's. He said that his home was a 24-hour seven-day-a-week party. Larry wasn't a slouch himself when it came to drinking. So they made good mates of one another. Thanks for commenting!

Keith was undoubtedly bipolar to some degree in an age where the most readily available self-treatments were alcohol, amphetamines and barbiturates. Today, he’d have a much better chance at being properly diagnosed and treated.
Just looked up the actor Robert Newton playing the part of long John silver ... Actually thought it was Keith moon at first glance ... Scary how the 2 looked so much alike ..
I was fortunate to be at the 'Live at Leeds' Valentine's Day 1970 gig that set the bar for live albums. There were no seats at all and it was really packed. People were hanging off the side of the walls and onto things. It was packed to the gills! There for the first time, the full force of the band was caught on record with all their unequaled ferocity and power.They were truly at their peak and ready to let loose with the sheer power and energy of the true rock band that they were. “I knew we had hit a roll,” Townshend told Classic Rock. “This mainly depended on Moon, of course. He was at the apex of balance between his drug use and youthful good health. Five years later he would start to slide. Moon as a musician was a great listener, and followed what John and I played. Roger feels, looking back, that Moon followed what he did vocally as well. So Moon was everywhere in these times, but playing with great affection. We also all seemed to have boundless energy.” I had just turned 19 and I still remember the immediacy of the gig.

@@kevincorcoran6493 I had hitchhiked from Birmingham - where I was at Uni - and slept on the floor at an old school friend's digs in Leeds after the gig. My ears stopped ringing about a week later! Their version of 'Summertime Blues' was an outstanding moment as the tempo/ beat was completely different than the original. The impact that Live At Leeds had on its release in 1970 was incredible...although I left both Uni and the parental home later that year and my mum threw all my records into the bin...including Live At Leeds. (I saw Led Zeppelin on the same stage a month earlier on January 24, 1970). The next live album groundbreaker for me was the Ramones 'It's Alive' recorded on New Year's Eve 1977 at the Rainbow. Unlike many other iconic rock guitarists, Pete Townshend liked punk music and embraced the new genre when it first burst on the scene. I fact I would say Townsend was the first UK punk rocker actually - with his songs of youthful frustration and hard, roaring anthems of discontent streaked with vulnerability. - eg My Generation (where Daltrey stuttered the vocals and came tantalisingly close to blurting out the “f” word!) / Pictures of Lily/ Substitute etc. A decade before punk rock emerged from the streets in the ‘70s, The Who were creating the blueprint. The way the band packed mayhem and melody into their unique sound in the studio - and especially onstage - instantly set it apart from its more tradition-bound contemporaries. As Townsend wrenched the last drop of feedback from the hunk of wood and wire in his hands, harpooning the speakers with it - in seconds the guitar would be in splinters. The fans loved it. Here, at last, was a band that sounded and performed like they felt! The Who’s defiance was a personal statement to which just about any kid with issues could relate to). The Ramones were big fans of the band and covered “Substitute” on their 1993 album “Acid Eaters”. Townshend himself went to see the band in New York when they were recording their version and ended up singing on the backing vocals of the track! As Joey Ramone (RIP) later recalled: “For ‘Substitute,’ Pete Townshend came down and sang background vocals, which was a real highlight for me, because I was always a big Who fan from the first time they came to America, and Townshend had always been kind of an unseen mentor for me.” (In the 1980s, when the Ramones performed on Top of The Pops, Joey also bumped into Roger Daltrey backstage). It is my good fortune that I live half the year in the Caribbean now. Roger Daltrey's Holmshurst Manor near Burwash in East Sussex - is about 25 miles away from our place in West Sussex. Happy days!

So at the time you may have been a bit disappointed on the lack of content but that's how the label issued it..thankfully the entire performance is available now. One hears so much about the tragedy of Keith Moon’s life, and of the worsening of his behaviour due to drug and alcohol abuse. I’m by no means denying the truth of any of that, but when people talk about his outrageous antics and dreadful behaviour, we tend to forget other things. I’ve heard a number of accounts that show Moon as an incredibly sweet man and a truly loyal friend. He was pals with the late, great Vivian Stanshall. Stanshall’s wife Ki tells of when Vivian was really ill and was resident in a mental health clinic. Apparently Moon was the only person who regularly visited his chum. And when Stanshall invited Moon to co-host a radio show with him, doing all sorts of funny skits and sketches, Moon kept his antics restrained, in some cases almost playing the straight man, allowing Stanshall to shine. Stanshall was writing a movie with Daltrey about Moon, much of it being told from the point of view of Stanshall’s memories of Moon, which would have shown the caring, emotional and funny side of the drummer. Sadly, Stanshall was facing his own demons which he combatted with alcohol and Valium, and he went from being the linchpin of the project to a liability that couldn’t be relied upon to recall anything or put it down on paper, and he was cut out of the project. Stanshall feared that without him it would just be a typical ‘sex, drugs, rock n’ roll’ tale o with the usual stories of Keith’s showbiz excesses and bad behaviour that everyone already knew about. He felt this would be unfair to the memory Keith Moon. The film never got made in the end anyway. Graham Chapman, of Monty Python fame, visited Moon in his hotel room, many many storeys up. He offered Chapman a drink from the mini bar. He was out of the drink that Chapman asked for. Chapman said it was fine. He’d have something else. But Moon was so concerned that he couldn’t offer his friend what he wanted that he climbed out of the window,disappeared for a bit and then came in through the apartment door with the drink. He’d actually climbed in through next doors window and asked the occupant if they had this drink. The gave it to him and brought it back to Chapman. An extreme thing to do (I’m sure room service would have sufficed) but, as Chapman recalls, Moon was showing his care and concern for a friend in his own way, and Chapman was touched by this. I’m not justifying the drug and alcohol abuse, or the outrageous behaviour that ended with tragic outcomes, or the bad way that he’s been said to have treated people when under the influence of whatever. But I always got the impression that Moon was a nice guy with a child-like sense of mischief who somehow or another fell down and got eaten up like so many other people in that industry, and it turned him into someone that really wasn’t his truest or best self.
Yes, very eerily similar to John Bonham who by all acounts was a very quiet, sweet, family guy but out onthe road with the booze and the coke he turned into an absolute monster - both real Jeckyll and Hyde charachters

I've said it before and I'll say it again he certainly did have a Darkside but he also was a very benevolent person. I remember reading a story about him in an old issue of Cream Magazine where he was in a bar in England and he sat down talking with an old prostitute. At the end of the conversation he traded his Rolex watch for something of hers of a lot less worth of course. @@GlenCarne funny that you bring up Ian. At the time his book was out he was living in Texas and had of course been married to Keith's ex-wife Kim. He had his own website this was in the early days of the internet back in the late 90s I believe. He was taking orders for his book on the site. I emailed because the books that he had had all sold out. He actually responded in an email to me apologizing for it and said he would let me know when the books arrived at his home. It was just a few weeks before Kim died in an auto accident. I never heard from Ian again. And I didn't want to bother him after that tragedy. Thanks for bringing back a memory that I cherish. I actually spoke with him on an email conversation on two separate occasions. What a down-to-earth guy.
I remember reading that when Kim left and ended up with Ian, Moonie paid £1000 for a known heavy to break Ian' s leg. Townsend quickly found out, and paid heavy not to. I think I'm My dear Boy Biography.

Beside seeing The Who a few times over the years, I saw Daltrey on his solo "Under a Raging Moon Tour 1985" at the Boston Orpheum. Great tribute album and tour for Keith Moon's legacy by Rodger.
I declare that album to me my favorite Roger Daltrey solo offering. The previous one Parting Should be Painless was so so. I will admit it had some pretty good songs on it but I am a big fan so I am a bit partisan when it comes to these things. I was able to get it on the budget rack.
Over 22 years ago I had a supervisor who had been one of the Who’s roadies back in the 70’s. He regularly joked about us not doing drugs whenever we had to sit through a Drug and Alcohol lecture. I asked him if he’s still in contact with the surviving members of the Who, to which his positive attitude turned to disappointment and he gave a short “No.” in response.
I remember reading a quote from John stating how he didn't understand how Roger could stand not drinking. I know that he said he did smoke grass early on but gave up on it. Probably accounts for his look today much younger than his 78 years. I know that Pete was a big drinker but I'm pretty sure he gave that up years ago also. The only two holdouts were John and Keith. We know what happened with them. John I believe also had a big gambling problem which Pete once remarked to be the reason for The Who Going out onto a tour. However I always take what Pete says with a grain of salt because many times he contradicts himself in interviews. Thanks for commenting!
And Tommy was the loudest movie I ever heard. Early Dolby surround. Special amps and speakers were brought in just for the film. It played for over a year at our huge screen D150 theater (sadly demolished now).

In the mid-2000s I heard a radio interview with Rodger daltrey and in this interview The Host wanted to delve in more into the subject of the day Roger knocked out Keith Moon with one punch. He wanted Roger to expand on any other incidents he remembers in which he hit other members of the band. Roger clearly sounded as if he was really tiring of these questions and did not want to accept the premise that he is simply a violent person.. he pointed out that every incident such as these had one thing in common, he was physically taking their drugs away from them. Alcohol as well in the case of moon. He knows bandmates resented him for this and they would always say things like who the f are you my bloody mum? Roger was convinced that his bandmates one of them possibly two of them were going to die before the who could reach their full stardom and potential. Before they could make some of the amazing albums and have some of the amazing tours they went on to have. So he chose not to care about the feelings of druggies but rather think about the band's legacy and it's potential and what it could still achieve. You could make out some resentment on his part at the entire line of questioning on this subject that has gone on for years. His answer made it clear that he was convinced that both Moon and John entwistle and even possibly p Townsend could all have died at a Young age. he may as well have said that one or more of them would have been members of the infamous 27 club. This interview is what made it clear to me that Townsend's decision not to tour in early spring of 1978 was for a reason he could not disclose to the press. But it was because he knew Keith Moon would never survive a tour at all and he wasn't even sure if moon could survive even without the tour. So he made up his electric guitar hurts my ears excuse rather than let Keith find out what he really thinks of his chances of carrying on.
No wonder Roger was tired of those questions; there's much more to the Who than smashing their instruments. I don't think he touched drink or any other drugs on tour and wonder how he coped with the mayhem.

It's possible to stop. But it means deciding to do it and letting your thinking change. Alcohol is a sort of religion. You don't realize it's bullshit until the moment you step away from it. I've had family members drink themselves right into the grave. It's a powerful deceptive drug. It has taken so many great artists. I wish Keith had been more scared. Such a great great drummer.
@@kps1961 Maybe not the greatest but definitely one of a kind as a drummer.I was lucky enough to see the Who in 75' and it is the concert by which all others are measured to me.
Moon really looked up to Robert Newton and as a teen he could recite Newton's Long John Silver lines word for word to friends. Moonie and Oliver Reed celebrated Newton's drinking stamina together too hah. Interesting to see Moon mimic the long john silver grimace in a few of Moon's performances such as in the Kids are Alright or even his role in Sextette, the inspiration was such a part of him. Still think he'd have taken off in the world of film had he really gone for it
There is a misconception that Keith Moon was a lovable rogue who could no wrong. But Daltery is talking quite openly here and it is clear the other band members had had enough of his behaviours. And sadly, to cap it all, by 1977/78 Moon had lost it as a drummer.
Yes, by 1978 the drumming on Wbo Are You was incomparable to Quadrophenia. He certainly had a bad side but also had periods of kindness. Perhaps he was bipolar. Who knows. Thanks for commenting!

I've been playing drums since 1983. This will not be a popular opinion. IMHO Moon was not a solid drummer until his later years. He was a spaz. It was chaos. Once he organized himself he was amazing. Won't Get Fooled Again, etc. Unfortunately alongside that he broke down personally. You cannot maintain that kind of lifestyle for long. The fact that he did as long as he did is super human.
Keith's drumming for the first 10 years was described by other British drummers (and Entwistle) as "going around" the beat. It was almost like hearing 2 drummers coming from one, where the 2nd drummer was your own mind filling in the natural beat while the gifted improviser/showman did his thing. Also, pointed out by Entwistle was the power behind the strokes which he described as "beautiful". Needless to say, I disagree with your assessment of Moon. PS - I'll take a Moonesque drummer any day (there are none, sadly) over anything "organized" ZZ Top (for example) or Charlie Watts did.
How come they never made a movie about Keith Moon --- similar to biopic movies about Freddie Mercury and Jim Morrison? Hollywood loves to make films about music icons with crazy lives and tragic endings, and Keith certainly fits that criteria.
There has been talk about a Keith Moon film project for a few decades now. At one point Mike Myers was supposed to play Moon, now Meyers is obviously too old for the part. They should make an anti drug and alcohol commercial with pictures of Moon in 1964 and 1978. In 14 years the guy went from an 18 year old kid with some much energy to a 55 year old stumble bum. Oh sorry 32 years old which I find hard to believe. He looked like Roger Daultry’s father at the end not his band mate.

Its sad we as a whole in society don't hold the alcohol industry accountable for all of the countless lives that have been destroyed by their poison. The buzz you feel is your body telling you to stop drinking poison.
The government taxes cigarettes at an extremely high rate. They aren't quite accountable as to where the money goes. Smokers are a minority. Drinking folks are a majority in the US. A heavy tax would never be placed on alcohol as the politicians would lose their jobs. Sad.
I typically drink one pint of beer a day, always a good beer, never wanted to get drunk, of course it has happened a few times, never in the last 35 years!! I'm still on the one pint per day unless we have visitors, maybe a half dozen times a year. I was a motor biker and four of us used to hang out together, never drinking alcohol just riding our bikes, two of the four were and still are teetotal, one used to drink from time to time and me a regular but a very quiet drinker. Heavy drinking can be a problem, it killed a great friend/cousin of mine, so sad such a great fellow, never used to drink then his job required to entertain customers, killed his liver!! I've never understood the need for heavy drinking, guess it was the way I was brought up!!! I loved the way Keith Moon worked on the drums, he always seems to inject so much vigour and energy into his playing!!
@@joevining2603 Hi Joe, I totally agree, it sometimes needs a strong will to be able to do what you want to do, sometimes peer pressure gets the better of us. I never took to smoking when all around me people were smoking, all my family and workmates. I was born just before the end of WWII and as I was growing up, everybody was smoking , it seemed. Us four motorbikes hardly ever drank alcohol and none of us smoked, we did loads of exercise like pedal biking, short track speed skating, I did track athletics and played soccer as well. We were a 'clean living' foursome in some ways!!!! 07:00 Sunday morning speed skating training at Richmond ice rink, many of my workmates would have nursing hangovers on a Sunday. Sundays were alway days we had to the full after the early morning training start. Cheers, John.

Its great to be a bystander / fan of such a spectacular life, especially one so concentrated and brief. Ive lived, travelled and experienced many things including being a professional musician and am now pushing 50, but I would not want to live (nor die) as Keith Moon did. So I dont.

Keith was not able to get through the first session of the songs. He was sobered up and that is the performance that you see in the movie now. I saw an interview once with ‘Legs’ Larry Smith, the drummer from the Bonzo Dog Band. He was a pal of Moons (apparently Moon liked to be surrounded by other drummers). He was there when the incident happened and claims that he was steering at the time. The driver had, according to Smith, left the car in ‘drive’ when he got out to see to the gang throwing coins at the car. When the car started to roll Moon slid into the drivers seat but, since he was drunk and didn’t know how to drive anyway, he was clearly not in control. So Smith leaned over from the back seat and tried to help steer, to no avail. He says that Moon was devastated by the death of Boland. That all being said, other witnesses to the incident have since claimed that it was Kim Moon that was behind the wheel and Keith deliberately took the wrap. With three different versions of the story that I know of, it’s unclear which is true. Maybe there are elements of truth in all three. I doubt we’ll never be sure. But I have heard from a few sources that it deeply troubled Moo. For the rest of his days.

I always wondered if Keith was aware of Neil Peart in 1976 and 1977. That album - All The World's a Stage - received a lot of attention because of the drum set on the cover (influenced by Moonie's) and the buzz around Neil's ability. I know Keith was calling himself "the greatest drummer" close to the end. Sad, all around.
Mooney was up there with anyone you can pick balls to the wall from the word go no band at that time had a drummer like him later you had baker etc but he was all over the place just nuts RIP mooney
Keith moon , Eddie van Halen and myself had much in common .we all had much musical talent but we all could not function around people without badly abusing ourselves with booze for or drugs . Eddie went much further than keith but still it killed Eddie and in my opinion left a lot of good music/art on the table because of it all . I suffered most of my life , unable to function around people but nowhere near abused my self like Eddie or Keith . I had no musical success But I lived long enough to outgrow the debilitating self conscious paranoia and anxiety . It almost killed me .
Although I am a who fan I never heard that he was a nasty person to people. I do know that he was nasty to his wife. I won't excuse that and that he was an absentee father. But I attribute that to his alcoholism. But other stories I've heard is that he was also very generous. Perhaps he was bipolar. Do you have any other information that you can provide? @@kevincorcoran6493 Fandom is a human trait, I'm not immune. He was an insufferable pain in the ass that was unreliable/ unprofessional. In most bands he'd been fired. For example: Ozzie Osbourne; David Byron; Gary Thain. Pete said on a doc he never liked his approach to percussion as he mimicked the melody which for some reason irked Pete.
Apparently during the first session of the performance of Baba O'Riley and won't get fooled again for the movie. There is a video on RUclips of a who performance in the mid-70s where Keith is so drunk that they have to carry him off stage and have someone come from the audience who knew how to play and replace him for one song I Believe maybe two. I can hardly understand him, combination of the Brit accent and the voice being too bassy. Keith did look like Robert Newton though the last few years.
I almost hear envy when I listen to Roger and Pete talk about their former band mate after all these years. Keith Moon was revered by the common man, and this reverence has only grown over time. No one saw Pete or Roger as they saw Keith. These two were businessmen and still very much are here in 2022 as they travel around and rake in the cash as they sound terrible. I believe Keith knew this about his fellow band members and it was something that he had to put up with. Roger, especially, seems insufferable.

This is sort of a long story. In the mid to late 70’s I drove Limos in Los Angeles and Keith Moon was a client and we drove him a lot. Keith was called, “Moon the Loon” and I can verify this as true. I received an order one day to go and pick up Keith In Van Nuys, CA and to take him to his home in Malibu. The pickup point was at a Jewish Synagogue. When I arrived Keith was dressed in a German Army Uniform goose stepping his way on the sidewalk in front of the Temple. Thankfully no one was around to catch his craziness and I drove him to Malibu. Shortly after that the US Government quietly asked Keith to please leave the country. This was probably in ‘76 or ‘77. In 1978 The Who released their Who Are You album. They came to Los Angeles for a release party at MCA Records located in Universal City, CA and I was to drive Keith. My orders were to stay with him 24-7 for the 3 days that he was in town and told not to drive him anywhere that he could get into trouble. For a total of 54 hours I stayed with Keith at his home in Malibu and did as I was told. I left him at the Los Angeles International Airport and that was the last time that I saw him. Shortly after that he died.

@@bikerguy5829 I beg to differ my man. We drove Keith for a couple of years and then he told the owner of the company that he had been asked to leave because the US would not renew his visa. When he returned in ‘78 he was reluctantly issued a visa and it was full of stipulations which is why I had to stay with him the whole time that he was in the Los Angeles area. I picked him up from LAX and dropped him at LAX 60 hours later. When he lived on Trancas beach he used Starlite Limousine service, if Mr Butler drove him that may have been in the UK or other places. Call BS all that you want but I had the joy of driving Keith on many occasions while I was employed at Starlite.
Peter Butler was his assistant. He lived with Keith in Malibu. He was with him all the time

I had general conversations with some of the people around him, but unless they were well known I remember no names. In the mid 70’s when I drove him Keith was hemorrhaging money and the owner of the Limo company kept cutting off his service. To repay the his debt he gave my boss a big screen TV and a Rolex watch to bring his account current. When he left in ‘77 he still owed the Limo company money, the owner filed a claim with his estate after he p[assed but I do not know what the outcome was. His last time in Los Angeles he was by himself except for some friends dropping by.
I always thought Roger had the strongest determination of all rock frontmen. His performance in the Tommy film is amazing. He is a captivating speaker and (I would imagine) rather impressively intimidating when pressed.

Saw The Who at the old Boston gahden. Two songs into the show Keith falls over his drum set, out cold. The curtains close. About 15 minutes later roger comes out and says they’re canceling the show because Keith was “Ill”. About 6 weeks later they came back. Keith came out center stage and took a bow to a standing O. They played for what seemed like three hours. It was awesome

I was at that show. They had a laser light show, first of its kind. I was peaking on my drugs, then it happened. Of course everyone thought it was a gag,,then out the door we went. I believe it was april fools day they returned.

I can still remember seeing an interview with his daughter Mandy where she recalled Keith punching her mom right in the face and she came crashing down to the ground. So dude had issues some of them very dark, and that's sad to think that drugs and booze led to that. By those standards he's no hero, but he was a gifted flawed rock star that burnt out just at the beginning of his decline. He just barely died before he got old, made it under the wire of the forever young club. He painted himself into a corner with his lifestyle and need for attention, aging was going to be truly rough on him had he not passed. It was going to get ugly with the Who, no way he could have toured or anything like that, so he was just about spent when he bowed out. There wasn't much music left, we got just about all he had, he left it all on the field as they say in sports.

Interesting. Glyn Johns' autobiography describes sessions where Keith could not do the parts. Glyn asked Keith to quit drinking for a few days and Keith said, "Well why don't you quit smoking?" Glyn quit smoking that day and never went back. Keith did not quit anything. Glyn describes various anecdotes about Keith that he says, "sound amusing unless you were there. The pranks were violent."

A strange coincidence - Keith Moon and 'Mama Cass' Elliot (of the Mamas and the Papas) died in the same bedroom of the same apartment in London, four years apart. The place was owned by singer Harry Nilsson. He subsequently sold it to Pete Townshend of The Who.
I wouldn't say that's where they died but that's where they were found dead.

Keith could be cruel, charming, sweet, giving, manic, depressed and tortured too. I would not have wanted to live his lifestyle, but I am glad he lived amongst us, albeit for a relatively short period of time.

@@PatriotSteve There was a press conference for the movie TOMMY that the WHO had just made and everyone was busy avoiding talking to any of the press or guests. But Keith Moon was very friendly to everyone and I approached him with a request. A friend of mine was under the weather and I asked if he would say a word for her. He grabbed my little tape recorder and delivered the sweetest message to her. Needless to say she couldn't believe he'd done that.

I was fortunate to be at the 'Live at Leeds' Valentine's Day 1970 gig that set the bar for live albums. There were no seats at all and it was really packed. People were hanging off the side of the walls and onto things. It was packed to the gills! There for the first time, the full force of the band was caught on record with all their unequaled ferocity and power.They were truly at their peak and ready to let loose with the sheer power and energy of the true rock band that they were. “I knew we had hit a roll,” Townshend told Classic Rock. “This mainly depended on Moon, of course. He was at the apex of balance between his drug use and youthful good health. Five years later he would start to slide. Moon as a musician was a great listener, and followed what John and I played. Roger feels, looking back, that Moon followed what he did vocally as well. So Moon was everywhere in these times, but playing with great affection. We also all seemed to have boundless energy.” I had just turned 19 and I still remember the immediacy of the gig.

@@kevincorcoran6493 I had hitchhiked from Birmingham - where I was at Uni - and slept on the floor at an old school friend's digs in Leeds after the gig. My ears stopped ringing about a week later! Their version of 'Summertime Blues' was an outstanding moment as the tempo/ beat was completely different than the original. The impact that Live At Leeds had on its release in 1970 was incredible...although I left both Uni and the parental home later that year and my mum threw all my records into the bin...including Live At Leeds.
(I saw Led Zeppelin on the same stage a month earlier on January 24, 1970).
The next live album groundbreaker for me was the Ramones 'It's Alive' recorded on New Year's Eve 1977 at the Rainbow. Unlike many other iconic rock guitarists, Pete Townshend liked punk music and embraced the new genre when it first burst on the scene.
I fact I would say Townsend was the first UK punk rocker actually - with his songs of youthful frustration and hard, roaring anthems of discontent streaked with vulnerability. - eg My Generation (where Daltrey stuttered the vocals and came tantalisingly close to blurting out the “f” word!) / Pictures of Lily/ Substitute etc.
A decade before punk rock emerged from the streets in the ‘70s, The Who were creating the blueprint. The way the band packed mayhem and melody into their unique sound in the studio - and especially onstage - instantly set it apart from its more tradition-bound contemporaries. As Townsend wrenched the last drop of feedback from the hunk of wood and wire in his hands, harpooning the speakers with it - in seconds the guitar would be in splinters. The fans loved it. Here, at last, was a band that sounded and performed like they felt! The Who’s defiance was a personal statement to which just about any kid with issues could relate to).
The Ramones were big fans of the band and covered “Substitute” on their 1993 album “Acid Eaters”. Townshend himself went to see the band in New York when they were recording their version and ended up singing on the backing vocals of the track!
As Joey Ramone (RIP) later recalled: “For ‘Substitute,’ Pete Townshend came down and sang background vocals, which was a real highlight for me, because I was always a big Who fan from the first time they came to America, and Townshend had always been kind of an unseen mentor for me.”
(In the 1980s, when the Ramones performed on Top of The Pops, Joey also bumped into Roger Daltrey backstage).
It is my good fortune that I live half the year in the Caribbean now.

One hears so much about the tragedy of Keith Moon’s life, and of the worsening of his behaviour due to drug and alcohol abuse. I’m by no means denying the truth of any of that, but when people talk about his outrageous antics and dreadful behaviour, we tend to forget other things.
I’ve heard a number of accounts that show Moon as an incredibly sweet man and a truly loyal friend. He was pals with the late, great Vivian Stanshall. Stanshall’s wife Ki tells of when Vivian was really ill and was resident in a mental health clinic. Apparently Moon was the only person who regularly visited his chum. And when Stanshall invited Moon to co-host a radio show with him, doing all sorts of funny skits and sketches, Moon kept his antics restrained, in some cases almost playing the straight man, allowing Stanshall to shine.
Stanshall was writing a movie with Daltrey about Moon, much of it being told from the point of view of Stanshall’s memories of Moon, which would have shown the caring, emotional and funny side of the drummer. Sadly, Stanshall was facing his own demons which he combatted with alcohol and Valium, and he went from being the linchpin of the project to a liability that couldn’t be relied upon to recall anything or put it down on paper, and he was cut out of the project. Stanshall feared that without him it would just be a typical ‘sex, drugs, rock n’ roll’ tale o with the usual stories of Keith’s showbiz excesses and bad behaviour that everyone already knew about. He felt this would be unfair to the memory Keith Moon. The film never got made in the end anyway.
Graham Chapman, of Monty Python fame, visited Moon in his hotel room, many many storeys up. He offered Chapman a drink from the mini bar. He was out of the drink that Chapman asked for. Chapman said it was fine. He’d have something else. But Moon was so concerned that he couldn’t offer his friend what he wanted that he climbed out of the window,disappeared for a bit and then came in through the apartment door with the drink. He’d actually climbed in through next doors window and asked the occupant if they had this drink. The gave it to him and brought it back to Chapman. An extreme thing to do (I’m sure room service would have sufficed) but, as Chapman recalls, Moon was showing his care and concern for a friend in his own way, and Chapman was touched by this.
I’m not justifying the drug and alcohol abuse, or the outrageous behaviour that ended with tragic outcomes, or the bad way that he’s been said to have treated people when under the influence of whatever. But I always got the impression that Moon was a nice guy with a child-like sense of mischief who somehow or another fell down and got eaten up like so many other people in that industry, and it turned him into someone that really wasn’t his truest or best self.

Yes, very eerily similar to John Bonham who by all acounts was a very quiet, sweet, family guy but out onthe road with the booze and the coke he turned into an absolute monster - both real Jeckyll and Hyde charachters

Thank you for the information! I'll have to check that out. Keith was not only the greatest drummer in rock but also one of the most dynamic personalities. I've said it before and I'll say it again he certainly did have a Darkside but he also was a very benevolent person. I remember reading a story about him in an old issue of Cream Magazine where he was in a bar in England and he sat down talking with an old prostitute. At the end of the conversation he traded his Rolex watch for something of hers of a lot less worth of course. @@GlenCarne funny that you bring up Ian. At the time his book was out he was living in Texas and had of course been married to Keith's ex-wife Kim. He had his own website this was in the early days of the internet back in the late 90s I believe. He was taking orders for his book on the site. I emailed because the books that he had had all sold out. He actually responded in an email to me apologizing for it and said he would let me know when the books arrived at his home. It was just a few weeks before Kim died in an auto accident. I never heard from Ian again. And I didn't want to bother him after that tragedy. Thanks for bringing back a memory that I cherish. I actually spoke with him on an email conversation on two separate occasions. What a down-to-earth guy.
I remember reading that when Kim left and ended up with Ian, Moonie paid £1000 for a known heavy to break Ian' s leg. Townsend quickly found out, and paid heavy not to. I think I'm My dear Boy Biography.

Beside seeing The Who a few times over the years, I saw Daltrey on his solo "Under a Raging Moon Tour 1985" at the Boston Orpheum. Great tribute album and tour for Keith Moon's legacy by Rodger.
I declare that album to me my favorite Roger Daltrey solo offering. The previous one Parting Should be Painless was so so. I will admit it had some pretty good songs on it but I am a big fan so I am a bit partisan when it comes to these things. I was able to get it on the budget rack.
A great tracj and tribute to keith
Over 22 years ago I had a supervisor who had been one of the Who’s roadies back in the 70’s. He regularly joked about us not doing drugs whenever we had to sit through a Drug and Alcohol lecture. I asked him if he’s still in contact with the surviving members of the Who, to which his positive attitude turned to disappointment and he gave a short “No.” in response.
I remember reading a quote from John stating how he didn't understand how Roger could stand not drinking. I know that he said he did smoke grass early on but gave up on it. Probably accounts for his look today much younger than his 78 years. I know that Pete was a big drinker but I'm pretty sure he gave that up years ago also. The only two holdouts were John and Keith. We know what happened with them. John I believe also had a big gambling problem which Pete once remarked to be the reason for The Who Going out onto a tour. However I always take what Pete says with a grain of salt because many times he contradicts himself in interviews. Thanks for commenting!

And Tommy was the loudest movie I ever heard. Early Dolby surround. Special amps and speakers were brought in just for the film. It played for over a year at our huge screen D150 theater (sadly demolished now).

In the mid-2000s I heard a radio interview with Rodger daltrey and in this interview The Host wanted to delve in more into the subject of the day Roger knocked out Keith Moon with one punch. He wanted Roger to expand on any other incidents he remembers in which he hit other members of the band. Roger clearly sounded as if he was really tiring of these questions and did not want to accept the premise that he is simply a violent person.. he pointed out that every incident such as these had one thing in common, he was physically taking their drugs away from them. Alcohol as well in the case of moon. He knows bandmates resented him for this and they would always say things like who the f are you my bloody mum? Roger was convinced that his bandmates one of them possibly two of them were going to die before the who could reach their full stardom and potential. Before they could make some of the amazing albums and have some of the amazing tours they went on to have. So he chose not to care about the feelings of druggies but rather think about the band's legacy and it's potential and what it could still achieve. You could make out some resentment on his part at the entire line of questioning on this subject that has gone on for years. His answer made it clear that he was convinced that both Moon and John entwistle and even possibly p Townsend could all have died at a Young age. he may as well have said that one or more of them would have been members of the infamous 27 club. This interview is what made it clear to me that Townsend's decision not to tour in early spring of 1978 was for a reason he could not disclose to the press. But it was because he knew Keith Moon would never survive a tour at all and he wasn't even sure if moon could survive even without the tour. So he made up his electric guitar hurts my ears excuse rather than let Keith find out what he really thinks of his chances of carrying on.

It's possible to stop. But it means deciding to do it and letting your thinking change. Alcohol is a sort of religion. You don't realize it's bullshit until the moment you step away from it. I've had family members drink themselves right into the grave. It's a powerful deceptive drug. It has taken so many great artists. I wish Keith had been more scared. Such a great great drummer.

Moon really looked up to Robert Newton and as a teen he could recite Newton's Long John Silver lines word for word to friends. Moonie and Oliver Reed celebrated Newton's drinking stamina together too hah. Interesting to see Moon mimic the long john silver grimace in a few of Moon's performances such as in the Kids are Alright or even his role in Sextette, the inspiration was such a part of him. Still think he'd have taken off in the world of film had he really gone for it

There is a misconception that Keith Moon was a lovable rogue who could no wrong. But Daltery is talking quite openly here and it is clear the other band members had had enough of his behaviours. And sadly, to cap it all, by 1977/78 Moon had lost it as a drummer.
Yes, by 1978 the drumming on Wbo Are You was incomparable to Quadrophenia. He certainly had a bad side but also had periods of kindness. Perhaps he was bipolar. Who knows. Thanks for commenting!

I've been playing drums since 1983. This will not be a popular opinion. IMHO Moon was not a solid drummer until his later years. He was a spaz. It was chaos. Once he organized himself he was amazing. Won't Get Fooled Again, etc. Unfortunately alongside that he broke down personally. You cannot maintain that kind of lifestyle for long. The fact that he did as long as he did is super human.
Keith's drumming for the first 10 years was described by other British drummers (and Entwistle) as "going around" the beat. It was almost like hearing 2 drummers coming from one, where the 2nd drummer was your own mind filling in the natural beat while the gifted improviser/showman did his thing. Also, pointed out by Entwistle was the power behind the strokes which he described as "beautiful". Needless to say, I disagree with your assessment of Moon. PS - I'll take a Moonesque drummer any day (there are none, sadly) over anything "organized" ZZ Top (for example) or Charlie Watts did.

Hollywood loves to make films about music icons with crazy lives and tragic endings, and Keith certainly fits that criteria.
There has been talk about a Keith Moon film project for a few decades now. At one point Mike Myers was supposed to play Moon, now Meyers is obviously too old for the part. Its sad we as a whole in society don't hold the alcohol industry accountable for all of the countless lives that have been destroyed by their poison. The buzz you feel is your body telling you to stop drinking poison.
The government taxes cigarettes at an extremely high rate. They aren't quite accountable as to where the money goes. Smokers are a minority. Drinking folks are a majority in the US. A heavy tax would never be placed on alcohol as the politicians would lose their jobs. Sad.
I typically drink one pint of beer a day, always a good beer, never wanted to get drunk, of course it has happened a few times, never in the last 35 years!! I'm still on the one pint per day unless we have visitors, maybe a half dozen times a year. I was a motor biker and four of us used to hang out together, never drinking alcohol just riding our bikes, two of the four were and still are teetotal, one used to drink from time to time and me a regular but a very quiet drinker. Heavy drinking can be a problem, it killed a great friend/cousin of mine, so sad such a great fellow, never used to drink then his job required to entertain customers, killed his liver!!
I've never understood the need for heavy drinking, guess it was the way I was brought up!!!
I loved the way Keith Moon worked on the drums, he always seems to inject so much vigour and energy into his playing!!

@@joevining2603 Hi Joe, I totally agree, it sometimes needs a strong will to be able to do what you want to do, sometimes peer pressure gets the better of us. I never took to smoking when all around me people were smoking, all my family and workmates. I was born just before the end of WWII and as I was growing up, everybody was smoking , it seemed. Us four motorbikes hardly ever drank alcohol and none of us smoked, we did loads of exercise like pedal biking, short track speed skating, I did track athletics and played soccer as well. We were a 'clean living' foursome in some ways!!!! 07:00 Sunday morning speed skating training at Richmond ice rink, many of my workmates would have nursing hangovers on a Sunday. Sundays were alway days we had to the full after the early morning training start.

Its great to be a bystander / fan of such a spectacular life, especially one so concentrated and brief. Ive lived, travelled and experienced many things including being a professional musician and am now pushing 50, but I would not want to live (nor die) as Keith Moon did. So I dont.

Keith was not able to get through the first session of the songs. He was sobered up and that is the performance that you see in the movie now. I saw an interview once with ‘Legs’ Larry Smith, the drummer from the Bonzo Dog Band. He was a pal of Moons (apparently Moon liked to be surrounded by other drummers). He was there when the incident happened and claims that he was steering at the time. The driver had, according to Smith, left the car in ‘drive’ when he got out to see to the gang throwing coins at the car. When the car started to roll Moon slid into the drivers seat but, since he was drunk and didn’t know how to drive anyway, he was clearly not in control. So Smith leaned over from the back seat and tried to help steer, to no avail. He says that Moon was devastated by the death of Boland.
That all being said, other witnesses to the incident have since claimed that it was Kim Moon that was behind the wheel and Keith deliberately took the wrap.
With three different versions of the story that I know of, it’s unclear which is true. Maybe there are elements of truth in all three. I doubt we’ll never be sure. But I have heard from a few sources that it deeply troubled Moo. For the rest of his days.

I always wondered if Keith was aware of Neil Peart in 1976 and 1977. That album - All The World's a Stage - received a lot of attention because of the drum set on the cover (influenced by Moonie's) and the buzz around Neil's ability. I know Keith was calling himself "the greatest drummer" close to the end. Sad, all around.

Keith moon , Eddie van Halen and myself had much in common .we all had much musical talent but we all could not function around people without badly abusing ourselves with booze for or drugs . Eddie went much further than keith but still it killed Eddie and in my opinion left a lot of good music/art on the table because of it all . I suffered most of my life , unable to function around people but nowhere near abused my self like Eddie or Keith . I had no musical success
But I lived long enough to outgrow the debilitating self conscious paranoia and anxiety .
It almost killed me .

For example: Ozzie Osbourne; David Byron; Gary Thain. Pete said on a doc he never liked his approach to percussion as he mimicked the melody which for some reason irked Pete.

I almost hear envy when I listen to Roger and Pete talk about their former band mate after all these years. Keith Moon was revered by the common man, and this reverence has only grown over time. No one saw Pete or Roger as they saw Keith. These two were businessmen and still very much are here in 2022 as they travel around and rake in the cash as they sound terrible. I believe Keith knew this about his fellow band members and it was something that he had to put up with. Roger, especially, seems insufferable.
