Wow, what a great building that Weatherspoons is in. Hello Alice 🙋♀️ Hi Howard 🙋♀️ That cathedral is amazing, so beautiful, such great architecture, wow! Interesting story of Coventry & Dresden. The new cathedral looked cool too. I just loved that tower 160 steps tho 😮 Thank you fir shari g Paul, I thoroughly enjoyed x💕
Thank you Kim. I do hope to be at the one in October if I can. Although I don't do urban very often, and I am not a fan of densely built up areas, I was quite taken with Coventry, and think it has come on hugely from those dark 'Ghost Town' days at the end of the 1970s. I found it quite a friendly and lively place too, without being too overbearing. It is certainly well worth visiting, with much of interest. It was a very enjoyable day, and it was lovely to see Alice again and be introduced to Howard, both great people. Take care, Paul
Hi Paul, looks like you had a really relaxed day out with Alice and Howard you looked really comfortable. I've only been to Coventry once and that for football so everything that you showed me was new and a discovery. That said I do have a photo of the cathedral back in 1961, it was taken by my parents, I think they must have stopped by heading south after their wedding in Halifax. It gives an arial view so I'm not sure quite where it was taken from If you would like to see it then let me know,. You can see some ants in it but I don't think any of them are my parents!! I guess we are about the same age, my eyes always light up when I see any of the Two Tone groups and maybe some of the other new wave of that time. The energy that they gave off was incredible, maybe never to be repeated but that's me looking through my 1980s eyes at the music of 2023!! Didnt know Hazel O'Connor was from Coventry!! Nice signage at the station, crystal clear!! Great video, well done!!
Thank you David! Yes, it was well out of my comfort zone but I am glad I managed to hide it well. I think I was an actor in a previous life 🤣. It was a most enjoyable day. That said, I was most impressed with Coventry. It has much to offer the visitor. Clearly a world away from a 'normal' Westcountry Wanderings video (whatever that is!) but variety is always good, I feel. Yes, I don't think that we will ever see the creative talent of music that came out between the 1960s and the early 1990s. In hindsight that wasn't a 'normal' period of musical creativity - it was phenomenal. Coventry was a true embodiment of that, and the Ska movement in particular. I was very fortunate to meet Hazel (O'Connor) in Hereford a few years ago after her gig - she took the time to speak with everyone who wanted to speak with her. It was an amazing concert. The saxophonist that played in the concert (not the same one as on the record - he can no longer play following an accident I believe) was phenomenal - I had a front row seat watching and listening to play that amazing bit in 'Will You'. She previously had worked with David Bowie amongst many others. Think she was called Sarah - I will try and find out. So many creative and talented people that have come out of one City! Thanks so much for watching and a lovely comment too. Take care, Paul
I did a quick search on YT for Clare Hurst and saw her doing will you with Hazel O'Connor in 2011 and then went back to 1981 to see the original. Apparently the original saxaphonist was made coauthor of that track .... and I then headed off for a bit of 80s music nostalgia!! These days we still have the creative talent but it's all moved on to RUclips with a particular hotspot in the region of Gloucester 😅😅 A few years ago we did a trip to Germany and passed through Dresden and saw their equivalent bombed out church, there was also one in Berlin. What got flattened was Nuremberg, I think it's the German equivalent of Stratford on Avon. The Germans built it back exactly how it was before the war. Closer to home, in Portsmouth we have the remains of the Garrison Church, not so famous but did host a royal wedding of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza ........ mind you not that I got an invite!!
From my own visits, I've found Coventry has a great atmosphere and much to interest the visitor. I think this comes across in your very interesting tour and conversations with Alice and Howard. Most enjoyable. Thank you.
Thank you Malcolm. Yes, this was a most enjoyable day. It was well out of my comfort zone but, occasionally, you do have to do that. I was very nervous but I tried to hide it. As you say, Coventry has much to offer the visitor. I was most impressed by this West Midlands City, which, while in the WM Conurbation, has a strong independent spirit - that, and its sense of community, came across. The old cathedral is incredibly moving still, and you could see that other visitors were similarly affected. Thanks again, take care, Paul 👍🙂
I really enjoyed that Paul! I have never been to Coventry so it was really interesting to see it and you shared sone really interesting facts. Nice to see you meet up with the other two. I have seen Alice’s video and yours is equally as good but different, which is great! I loved listening to your chats about RUclips. I had a couple of intermediate places to film in today and that resulted in low confidence in presenting. I live editing too. It’s such a craft creating a watchable, engaging video from all the clips and really enjoyable. I loved the street photography at the end too!
Thank you Louise! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I was most impressed with Coventry - to be honest, I didn't think I'd like it, as it isn't my sort of place that I cover on my channel, but, I thought, Coventry was rather wonderful! It had a great sense of community spirit, and very little litter and graffitti in the city centre. Fantastic history there too! Cheers Louise! Take care, Paul.
Thank you for another superb video. Different being in a city but just as enjoyable! I liked the views you achieved from the top of the cathedral tower. I have never visited the cathedral and though I have seen photos yours were very moving. I’m glad you had good company during your visit too.
Thank you Diana! I was very nervous prior to making this video, as a big urban area is well out of my comfort zone. However, I need not have been because there was something about Coventry that made me feel relaxed, even before I had met up with Alice and Howard - both lovely people and RUclipsrs. Coventry impressed me a great deal, and I felt it had a lot to offer the casual visitor. You can't help but feel emotional when you walk into the old cathedral, and I was not the only visitor struck by that feeling of history and spiritual connection. I felt it deeply. I am so glad that I managed to convey that sense in the video. Thanks so much, take care, Paul 👍🙂
Thank you Howard! It was such a pleasure filming with you and Alice - a most enjoyable day. Glad you enjoyed the video. Happy Travels, and I hope to catch up with you again soon. Cheers, Paul.
What a wonderful video, I had no idea that any of old Coventry still existed. Your coverage of the ruined cathedral, with the statue from Dresden & the wording "Father forgive" on the wall was quite moving. How appropriate that there should be a chapel of reconciliation in the cathedral. The Trinity Church was also quite splendid.
Thank you Faith. Glad you enjoyed the tour. I was most impressed with Coventry and I thoroughly enjoyed my day here. It has much to offer the visitor and, as you say, the ruins of the (2nd) old cathedral are very moving. Take care, Paul 👍🙂
What a brilliant day we had. I enjoyed your video and watching your story of the day. Interesting how we were in the same areas at the same time, producing a different take on each location. You spotted a few things that I didn't which was good to see. Roll on the next meet up. Brilliant day.
How very different from the usual videos you produce. Way outside your comfort zone. I hope you were OK. It's made you years since I've been to Coventry. Your video was lovely. Very informative and how nice to two of your fellow RUclipsrs Beautifully photographed. A superb commentary and what gorgeous black and white photos at the end.
Yes, it was Michael! Thankfully, I was in the right mood on the day! I could not make videos like that all the time. However, I was very impressed with Coventry; I thought it had a great atmosphere, and a good community spirit. As I said in the video, in very busy places it can be easier to vlog because you blend into the crowd. Thanks for your kind comments, take care, Paul 🙂👍
Paul being separated from the West Midlands conurbation by the green belt you mentioned (known as the Meriden Gap) Coventry remains very much its own city remaining culturally (if not politically) within Warwickshire
It certainly feels a million miles away from places like Alcester, Warwick and Leamington Spa, and even further from places like Kineton, Stratford-upon-Avon and Fenny Compton! That said, I was most impressed with Coventry. It seemed to have a good community spirit, and, as you say, an independent spirit too. It is like it is in its own county.
@@westcountrywanderings I'd just like to further add that most of Warwickshire comes under the Diocese of Coventry whereas Birmingham (like Bristol) has its own diocese

Not Sarah, but Clare, Clare Hurst. You can see her in action here on YT.

made a county corporate in 1451 known
as the 'County of the City of Coventry'
