Is it risky buying used? Yeah.
    Did I buy used? Yup!
My used hardware I'm currently using: My GPU (EVGA GTX 1080 Classified), CPU (Xeon E3-1231-V3), Motherboard (Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5), CPU Cooler (EVGA CLC 280), Both monitors (Dell S2716DG & HP Compaq LA1951g) and all HDDs (1x Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM, 2x Seagate Barracuda 500GB 5900RPM & Samsung Spinpoint 160GB 5400RPM)
Only new parts of my build, is my PSU (EVGA SuperNOVA 750w G2), RAM (4x4GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400MHz), case (NZXT S340 Elite, fans (2x Corsair AF120 in exhaust and 2x Corsair SP140 for intake) and my SSDs (Samsung 960 Evo 256GB & Kingston HyperX 3K 240GB).
I buy used all the time, and I couldn't be happier! I just make sure what I am buying is still within warranty if it is used. At least then I have a failsafe.

  • @SplitteR2B

So, I recently bought this pretty much exact Gigabyte RX570 card and under the ad the guy said it wasn't used for mining at all and that he was giving 7 day working warranty. The card is not the mining edition, it has 4 ports and it's keept in pretty good condition. So when I tried to install AMD driver it didn't recognize it at all, doesn't matter which version I installed result was the same. So I looked this problem online and found one little tool that apparently fixes this for the most part. It's called AMD Pixel Clock Patcher and after fresh driver install, I just need to use this to make it recognize the driver. After watching your video I realised that this card was probably used for mining because the problem you had here was exacly the same I had.
I have been playing every game without any problems with that tool until now. I don't know if you are aware of this but Valorant officially came out and it needs to install Anti Cheat, which acts like driver and it automaticly turns on when your PC starts. The problem I have with that Anti Cheat is that it screws my AMD driver also and this tool can't really fix the issue. If I uninstall Anti Cheat everything comes back to normal after the restart.
I would like to ask you, is it safe to flash GPU BIOS because I am kind of afraid to do it since I had really tight budget to buy it?

I bought 2 RX 580's used, the first was a 4GB MSI Armor, the second was a XFX XXX OC+ 8GB, the XFX card has a bios switch, one bios for mining, one for gaming.. Whoever owned it before me flashed a 1200mhz core, 2100mhz memory (micron) onto the gaming bios, and left the mining switch alone, like a complete idiot.
The MSI 4GB card came in great condition, a big of sag from having no backplate, but clean and with a clean bios..
I'm actually worried about the XFX 8GB card, I was going to flash it back to factory, but it works just as a normal card, I just have to clock the core back to 1366mhz..
The problem is, when they flash the bios for mining, they change more than just the clocks for the memory and the core, timings are changed, voltages, etc...
I just don't want to brick my card, since my PC isn't a UEFI board, it's a BIOS board, and apparently that has some importance.

    • @lukafireman
      @lukafireman 5 лет назад +1

dear person with same name, reflashing the bios does take some skill however it's still completely basic, there are some step by step really thorough guides making sure you do it right without ever worrying of bricking just about anything in it. I would advise doing so whilst the card is set up as secondary in the pcie slot and it's not giving any display.

Never had a bit of trouble out of the 280x and I've used it about every day since... well, since they sold R9 280x's. If you can absorb the short-term risk, used is the way to go. Right now, you could build a 1440p rig out of used parts for like $400 bucks. Couple hundred bucks more and you could get a decent sized monitor.

Managed to destroy (burned) one motherboard and damage another with a used 960, be careful out there. In my experience I've lost with used quite often, but new has always been 100%. Other thing is not to tweak critical machines, eventually there will be an oversight and hardware instakilled/damage over time.

Nice Video. I was able to get a 4 month old Gigabyte RX Vetga 64 OC in Nov of last year for a total of $371 with a 2 year warrenty. Them I was also able to register the card with Gigabyte. I do believe you can get a very good deal on used equipment if you take your time and are careful of who you are buying it from. I am very happy with my purchase of the Vega 64 card. Iy has been a very nice upgrade from my previous card which was a MSI Radeon RX 580 Gaming X 8 gb bought ( new ).

My solution for heating after 3 r9270 with artifacts, is common termal paste, (even much if that means no air bubbles in between the square. Lockit, and 2 120mm fans connected to the mobo. Straight out of the box I put the 120mm fans glued over the two original fans, dont care about beauty and noise. After a well done 4 years h60 mod on a sapphire, it leaked and heated up. Since than no more zips, no more taking out the cooler and plug fans onto it, only lockit glued right over the case, if comes with only one fan even better two fans one over the other LOL, - 10 degrees and reliable like nothing. Or crossfire two overheated gpus to look nice...

Isopropyl/isopropanol alcohol (hardware stores usually have this), cotton cloth or paper wipes, and compressed air. Don't use materials that easily generate static electricity, such as polyester.

A lot of people scared of 'mining GPUs' should not be. If you buy a used card that was used in a good environment (usually this means buying from a seller that has 100+ cards) the risk is VERY low. Mining (if done professionally) does not really limit the lifetime of the card.

And the cards worked flawless opened and used vs sealed I could tell absolutely no difference.

No need for bios reflash! I use my PC for mining and it's got mining optimized bios, but can run games perfectly fine with even better performance! The app you need is atikmdag patcher. Short story, it tells to confused drivers that everything is ok. It is a lot less risky procedure than reflashing bios where for example power loss can brick your card.

If that thermal paste was stock and not aftermarket, it's probably designed to work fine dry. At least that's what I think I recall hearing about manufacturer thermal paste. Has better longevity because it doesn't weaken from drying out, despite having slightly lower thermal effectiveness.

i have an RX470 3 years now and i noticed that in some games it hits over 80C while in others it stays at 65C, in both cases the fps are locked at 60 with vsync. in some games it also has the habit of having wild changes in temperature from 60 to 82 depending on what's on the screen. for example in a desert area the temps drop to 60 and in a forest it jumps to 82... at that point the fans are going at 100% and drop it back to 81.

  • @Grnfinger

    Very risky indeed.
I bought a MSI 570 gaming from eBay. Clearly a used mining card. Fans have died, the lighting has failed and there is zero power to the PCB connector socket on the GPU.
Bought from a seller that was very hard to deal with and had to in the end file a charge back with my credit card company to recover my loss.
Bought a new Powercolor 570 and it's worth the extra few bucks for the price of them new.
Best card for the buck at 1080 gaming.

The reason is that the stock gigabyte bios uses lower vcore voltage than the aorus which is 1150 MV at boost clock.
Take that mv and reduce it by 150 or 170 and you'll see it never going over 58.
Aorus bios = MSI gaming x bios (Same voltages same clock)
    Gb stock bios= underclocked undervolted
