    So im going out on a limb here but this is what I think happened. The original owner of the saw died. His family went through his estate and tried starting the saw but the pull cord wouldn't retract from sitting so they threw it on the dump figuring it was "old" and broken. What do you think? Why would someone throw this saw away?

    Those older Poulan saws were just as good as their contemporaries. In good shape they are very serious cutters. Good find and worthy of a repair and return to service.

    Brandon I went to drop off a truck load of shelving at my local metal recycling yard yesterday. Sitting right by where I unloaded was an identical 306A! I threw it in the truck and only when I started searching for a manual did I realize it was the saw from movie and then stumbled on your video looking for a video showing a teardown! I was just as excited hahaha Rad! Mine fired up first pull so I quickly started a full teardown and restore. Thing is a tank! Has a layer of old gas crusted throughout tho, probably gotta take the carb apart.

    The Penncraft 17" JC Penny chainsaw, in red, is the same as a poulan 306a. I just pulled one out of a shed, that hadn't been ran in god knows how many years. Like your video. Love it when someone puts some time into something to fix it up and keep it cutting. There is so much personality in a chainsaw, more so than almost any other piece of machinery. Take care, good on ya for giving it a second life.

      Thanks man and I'll have to keep my eye out for that Penncraft... I have never heard of that before. You are so right when you say they have personality...I'm seriously drawn to this saw and it is extremely enjoyable to use...way more than any newer saw I have used. This is when things were made with pride and quality and you can still feel it when you grab hold and squeeze the throttle. It's a beast and so much fun to use. Thanks for watching and the great comment!

    Oils back in the 60'and 70's were not as good as they are today. I would go with 40:1, because that is what my Poulans used. If it want stay lit, lean out the low side, slightly until it does. The 32:1 may be making it load up and die. High end sounded pretty good.

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  5 лет назад

      I think your right. I've since switched over to a true fuel 40:1 and it runs much better.

  • @falgianibrandon
    @falgianibrandon 5 лет назад +5

    Use the 16:1 ratio. Thats what it calls for so do it. Im an advid saw collector. You'll trash the saw if you dont. Not worth experimenting with fuel ratios.

    • @DickWheels
      @DickWheels 3 года назад +2

      LMAO you don't need 16:1 on todays oil. The saw calls for 16:1 cause back then they used SAE motor oil. 40-50:1 with todays high quality oil is perfectly fine!

    I just picked one up the other day for my collection. There wasn't any stickers on mine, but luckily it still had the data tag on it that showed it. I plan on restoring mine and try and find some oem stickers for it. I even picked up a craftsman 1.8a which is an echo 302 saw while I was there. They weren't the cheapest saws I've ever bought, but at least I got my 306a. Congrats on the find and getting the ol girl running again.

    Yep you were making some sawdust there buddy - a few passes with your set of files and you'll be good. You're right about today being a throw-away society - manufacturers build in way too much obsolescence and too many consumers just chalk it up to not having the time to sort things out and just replace over repair. With that said I have a Poulan saw that's giving me fits at the moment - I'll get it sorted but it's frustrating when things aren't working and it's not due to maintenance or care. Good stuff!

    • @BrandonLund

      Thanks man. I guess I never really understood how people could be like that. I spent much of my younger years living on the road traveling to jobs and you could always tell the economics of the comunity you were working in by the things the residents would put on the side of the road for trash. Back when stainless grills were just coming out, people were trashing their perfectly good grill with full tanks of propane. Who does that! Oh well, their loss, my gain!

    Nice find, sharpen the chain and fine tune the carb and maybe do a pressure/vac test to make sure there are no leaks, would hate to wreck that piston cylinder due to a lean run condition.
    16:1 mix was standard in the 60's and 70' cause the oil wasn't as good of quality as it is today. 16:1 may also be because it has a bare cylinder although it could be chrome. 32:1 should work fine as long as you use a good quality oil (nothing from Walmart or the Dollar Store), I use Lucas Semi Synthetic mix and run a 32:1 mix in all my 2 cycle equipment and toys.
    Would $25 buy it right now?🍺🍺🍺

    • @BrandonLund

      I cut a pile of wood with it so far. Probably around 7 cord (which is a lot for me) and so far so good. It still runs like a top. I'm a firm believer like you mentioned of using good oil. I also try to use ethanol free gas. Lately I've been using True Fuel which is pre-mixed at 40:1 and it seems to like it. That offer is tempting but i'm gonna have to decline Hahahah lol Cheers brother :)

    I did the math on the oil/gas mix it is 16 to 1. I heard you comment no on that. I met an old guy who was chatting me about two cycle. His comment mirrors what you found under the lid of this Antique Poulan 1/2 pint (8 oz.) to 1 gallon (128 oz.), it's 16 to 1 ratio. I checked Lawnboy mower info scrawled on my wall 30 years ago, it is 32 to 1. What did the old guy say? He said if you want your 2 cycle to run longer, double the amount of oil, a little smoke won't matter a bit. My new Husqvarna Chain saw runs 50 to 1. 2.6 oz. to 1 gallon gas. PS, I have owned a Poulan like the one you have, for 40 years. Guess what is wrong with it at the moment? Yep, the cord is yanked out and wrapped around the handle, ha ha. Good job, thanks for the video. Yeah, chain brake is a major safety upgrade, but many of us have done without them for decades safely. Cheers.

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks Bruce! That little saw is a blast to use! Going from a saw with a chain brake and then picking up the Poulan, with its loud exhaust and zero safety features just makes feel cool. I love it! You need to get that recoil fixed and let it live again lol. I wonder if the 16:1 ratio had anything to do with leaded gas back then? I thought lead was a lubricant though? That saw is really the only equipment I own dating back that far and even my 15 year old Homelite saw calls for 50:1. I hate to blow it up so I should probably reconsider. I've been running that tru-fuel so we will see how that goes in the spring when things come out from winter storage. Thanks for the support and great comment! Cheers

      @@BrandonLund Brandon, my 306 has a 20 inch bar, and was a gift to me from a good neighbor. He bought it used around 1970 and gave $16 for it with a new chain and bar, so he too got a killer deal. So Oscar is gone but this saw may even outlive me too at age 67. Will be doing to it what you just experienced with the cord out of it. The cord seems huge so I may have replaced it at one time with the wrong size. All the old timers that knew about these are pretty much gone, it's hard to believe it is 49 years old. Thanks again for the video, I know just what to expect.

    sweet, i just picked up the rebadged "Dayton" model of this saw, for safety's sake i am going to take the bar and chain off until it is running clean with the carb tuned, I know the old fuel gummed up the carb, it ran with full choke but bogged under throttle.

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  6 лет назад +1

      William, yup, sounds like your idle circuit is gummed up. I'm not sure what part of the country your in, but I just recently started using a pre-mix fuel that comes in a can. You can get it in 40:1 and 50:1. I run 40:1 in this saw. It's supposed to not contain ethanol, which is brutal on carburetors. The can says it's good for up to 2 years once you open it so I guess we will find out how my equipment fares after winter. If it does well, I will probably run all my mixed stuff on it. Congratulations on your saw...your going to enjoy it...It's a lot of fun and you can feel the power!

    I don't know about that. I bought a Stihl HS-80 of of eBay. The owner told me that it had fuel problems and the carb needed to be adjusted. It also did not have a motor cover. It took me a hour or so to replace the fuel lines and get it running. I also put a motor cover, new fuel lines and grometts, pull rope and rebuilt the carb over the next two months. Now, it looks original and runs like it to. Just a little TLC. BTW, it was made on 25 May 1999 in Virginia Beach, according to Stihl. Disposable is in who made it. Poulans made 40 years ago are good saws. I never had a 306 but I had a 3400, 3700 and 395 and they were excellent saws and we're running when I sold them.

    I have a craftsman branded 306a i got yesterday and the only issue on the surface i see is a worn gasket on the fuel tank top half.
    Also, the saw used in the movie was a 245A. The fuel tank was larger as well as the breather. Look at still and BTS images next to a 245 and 306. People say its a 245 and a 306 or a 306 with 245 parts but its 1000% a 245.

    The quality of that saw looks better than the newer ones because it has more metal in it. The newer ones I don't just hate, I loathe. I bought a 50 cc Poulan Pro. The same company makes Husqvarna saws, but Poulan is dangerous and cheap. The chain came off twice, the pull starter broke with very little use and even though it will sometimes start, you can't keep it started. I replaced the air filter, the fuel filter and never used anything but premixed gas without ethanol and I could not keep it running. It did not even make a good doorstop. I put it out at the trash and nobody took it because it was a Poulan. Other uses have the same complaints. I have a Husqvarna, Echo and Stihl that all work flawlessly. Sorry for the rant on newer Poulans, but I just hate them. Yours might be worth keeping because it is older, before they started making them cheap and dangerous.

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  6 лет назад

      Yah I've heard similar about the newer Polans also. Sorry your experience was a bad one. This one is definately built well, but it could be very dangerous if your not careful...this was made without a chain brake. You will only mess up once with this saw. I went out and bought chaps and everything...this is a saw that has to be respected.

    40:1 mix is more than fine. You can even use 50:1 for all saws old and new. The 2 cycle oil today is not what they used back in the day and is a much better oil. They used "old school" 30 weight. Unless you feel like changing the engine, always open the exhaust first and check for scoring, if you see grooves on the piston chances are the cylinder is junk as well. Always before you try to start an old chainsaw, the exhaust must come off, there could be rust chunks in the exhaust that can be sucked in the engine and you could destroy it yourself.

      @BrandonLund  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks Tom, I appreciate the sub! The saw is working fine, although it's not a huge fan of ethanol gas, I've had to do a carb clean after a winter storage. To avoid the ethanol gas issue I buy true fuel premixed at 40: it's a bit pricey but its clean, doesnt rot out metal gas tanks and stays stable for months. The saw loves it and so do I.

    • @johnnorman7708
      @johnnorman7708 3 года назад

      The Super oily fuel mix ratios were a reflection of the low quality oils of the 60s, 70s and even 80s. Poulan settled on 40:1 after the oils evolved. Homelite settled on 32:1. This was with their respective brand of oils and newest versions at the time of the new mix ratio recommendations. Personally I don't go with super lean modern ratios in older stuff. Some of the Super high tech synthetic oils have 100:1 ratios. I find that just plain disturbing. Old lessons and traditions you know.

      Deanballoonatic hey it's all about repurposing and getting a use out of something old. Good on you! I'm sure you will get years of use and memories from your "Halloween saw. I don't normally stumble on to find like this so my entheusism was showing through when it actually ran. This thing runs like a top. I've cut 3 cord of firewood this summer. I'm gentle with it though because I want to keep it nice. Thanks for the great comment. Be sure to post up a pic of your saw on my Facebook page when you get it done! I'd love to see it!

    The old Poulans were good saws. Now they have a life of hours not years. Junk new. Buying a new saw, go with Stilh or Husky. Yeah, the Husky is made my same company as Poulan.

    How do you pick up stuff at scrap yard don't you have to drop stuff off.

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  10 месяцев назад

      It depends on your town / city, where you go and the relationship you have with them. Some don't mind if you drop something off and pick something up. Some may charge you a fee by the pound. Some towns could care less what you do, back up and take what you want. Saves them from handling it and taking it to a processor.

Maybe yours is different and You've since figured it out and turned it so it idles without the chain engaged. To be honest not completely sure I just got it in yesterday. It’s got a lot of dirt all inside it hopefully not in the engine, it needs a new pull chord, so until I get that and some gas in it I can’t test it unfortunately.
