- Welcome to Part 3 of Jonny's Austin Allegro V6 supercharged sleeper project, where he is converting the most hated British car and making it perform, handle and stop like a hot-ish hatchback. The 1977 Antique Gold Austin Allegro's drivetrain has been taken from a 1993 Rover 827 Si donor car, which has a Honda-derived C27A 2.7-litre 24v V6 and a manual 5-speed gearbox.

In this episode:
-Midland Performance & Retro drill out the spot welds to remove the front wings.
-The engine and gearbox are taken out, ready to finish engine bay and strut tower fab
-A whole lot of 3d laser scanning happens to the front suspension parts.
-3d printed caliper brackets are tried for size on the Wortec brake kit.
- Jonny opens the gearbox to fit a Quaife (automatic torque biasing) diff.
-Jonny starts stripping the C27A Honda V6 of its manifolds and cam covers.
-Midland Performance & Retro cut out the boot area for rear cooling & make a firewall.
-New adjustable GAZ Gold coilover dampers with adjustable top mounts.
-Some ebay parts for the cooling and front suspension system
-Using a pub bar cider sign as a third braking light. Yes, Jonny is being weird.

Weird how the title is not at all clickbaity, but it still somehow is the most awesome title there is right now on my feed.
Oh it is definitely is clickbait. Just not unfulfilled clickbait.
Can't beat actual quality content
Hello
you serious with the MAGA hat, Jonny?
@@alexeimscruz2893 it's MABA actually

But you can roll it in glitter.
Reading the comments before watching.. I was thinking that is weird and specific fluid bearing vessel. Having watched the video I know understand this reference. What a mad man

I thought this was evil genius from the word ‘go’, but the District Line fabric for the seats is the icing on the fabulous cake. Very well done indeed... can’t wait to see the rest of this.
I'm loving this project 👍🏼.
Here in Barbados where I live, the Allegro wasn't a big favourite for many, but I loved them hahaha.
All now I still get a cursing when I say I like Allegro's 😂.
When I was a boy, there was a neighbor who lived across the street from mom. He had a 4dr Orange Allegro fitted out with Wolfrace wheels, full Pioneer Stereo, fog lamps etc etc...sweet....
Keep on pushing bro 👍🏼👊🏼
Johnny definitely make the Cider jug a brake light. I am pissing myself laughing with that one 😂😂👍
Agreed. Also a modern strip brake light would not be right
I agree, a modern strip will look terrible. The cider light will be so great
Dunno. Alcohol and driving?
Agree, he obviously wants to do it and it wouldn't work at all in most builds, this one however.
classic West country. 5 and drive.
It brings back a lot of memories for me! My 1st car was a white Austin Allegro 1300, 'N' plate, 4 door. It lasted about 18 months until I skidded into the back of another car that had unexpectedly braked for a pedestrial crossing just off a roundabout! Most stupid place to put a crossing. I was keeping an eye on vehicles from my right as I entered the island and didn't see the car infront stop. It was raining and my wheels locked up and skidded into the back of the car! A policeman even saw it happen and that was unfortunate and didn't do anything else! The whole frontend of was crushed and it was un-economic to repair. :-(
I still think it wasn't half bad as far as cars of the times go.
Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing how your project goes on.
Thanks for the memories!
JontyRP.
I really like the big up for the various UK based companies.
Has to be done. There are so many cottage industries doing amazing things, so if there is ever a time to celebrate their services it is 2021.
Makes good sense for a British made car as well
@@TheLateBrakeShow weld all the front panels together to make a steel flip front like they did on project binky.

Look on their face is priceless .. nothing better than a sleeper that looks like nannas shopping car. I think you are doing a great job on your build. 👍🏻
I absolutely LOVE this project! I’m a big car fan, always have been, but never really understood the technical and engineering side of cars. But this project, along with Jonnys superb explanations and presenting, have helped me so much to understand more of the inner workings for a car! Thank you! We need another update!!!!! P.s I am watching all your videos from oldest to newest since discovering you about a month or two ago. LOVE this channel!
Same as you...cant find the rest of this series though...did it stop at 3?
The power of 3D scanning & 3D printing for rapid prototyping on one off engineering projects is incredible. Combine that with CNC tech & you can literally have infinitely repeatable ‘bespoke one off’ parts that should mitigate one of the biggest risks you accept if you want to buy somebody else’s ‘one off project’. We’re not all Alan Millyard, but we can all email a file to a toolmaker & say ‘please make me one of those in this material, I broke the original’.
That checked seat fabric is so cool, this is my favourite car project series on RUclips at this point
At first glance I thought the fabric might be 1970s/80s WMPTE bus seat fabric which would have been great. The London Underground fabric is still very cool.
Hi, I had a 1750 sport allegro new in 1974, in aconitine which was purple, loved the car, swapped the quartic steering wheel for a 10 inch round leather bound steering wheel which meant I couldn’t park or do a 3 point turn without rupturing my arm muscles haha, but that that’s what you did in the 70’s, always loved the look but hated the gearbox ( Maxi sh1t shift), oh and the paint was rusty on the window trim from new, respirated twice. Happy Days, good luck with this conversion, it’s going to be great
The cider brake light looks brilliant, don't let him talk you out of it, please do it!
Well said!
ABSOLUTELY! MUST DO! and as a 3rd brake light. Don't lose your (cider) bottle on this one jonny!
Absolutely! Go the cider jug as a brake light, love it
Came here to say this! Do it!!
Put it on the bonnet
Loving the build .
My dad had 3 allegros when we were kids, (we must of been poor)
We made him drop us off around the corner from school because we were so embarrassed 🙈 of the cars , 1 orange, 1 blue & a bloody brown estate, which was the most embarrassing of all .
The funny thing is I’m in my 40s now and keep looking for one every so often for Dad , nostalgia I suppose,
We ad two Allegros in the family at the same time - my brothers then mothers Allegro 1500 LE and my 1980 Allegro 1750 TC Equipe which were both very reliable and excellent cars and we were never embarrassed to be driving or seen in them - as a matter of fact every time I left the Equipe parked anywhere I always came back to people looking in it and at who asked me questions about that car and you would never have had that happen with any other ordinary car back then or even now. Allegros were just another car on the road back then that no one would have batted an eyelid at and it was only later with Top Gear spouting their drivel about Allegros and Marinas etc that the dummies who watched that started to spout the same drivel because most people are dumb sheep - that is why the religions call their followers their flock because they can spout any old crap and the dumb sheep will believe them.
This has got to be the most loved most hated car ever! You’re doing wonderful things, Johny!
Hoovie will be glad to know he’s not the only person crazy enough to pay good money for public transport pattern fabric in their project car
Imagine the shattered psyche's of all the yobs after being overtaken by an Allegro!
most these days would have no idea what it is , poor sods.
Including the biggest nob of all Geremy Clarkson.
I had no idea what an Allegro was before this. I am probably too young, and there are not so many older cars on the roads here in Northern Ireland, presumably due to a combination of rust/rot and the export of good examples back to England.
Part of the Allegro owners club are you?
Put me down as one of the people who think that the original car was awful but yet I'm addicted to watching this little cars journey.
I don't know if it's your own likeability Jonny or the fact that you've chosen such a left field choice of car to restore-upgrade. Maybe it's because I'm slightly wierd myself and just can't wait to see the finished project.
I hope you get a quid for every person who says "why an allegro Johnny?"
Good luck mate and keep up the excellent work.
RE: Taunton Cider display thing.
🤔 I can see it with a blue strobe and a stick on plunger bottom ready to stick on the roof in cider related emergencies.
oh yes!
Love it!!!
So in other words.... A permanent feature 🍺⚠️
Go with your idea and use it as a brake light.
Thankyou Johnny. At last. THE best project on you tube by a country mile. There I've said it. again.

Aw shucks Johnny you've made me blush. Never had a pervert call me a gent before.

Well, I feel absolutely cheered up by the sheer invention (with necessary blokey idiocy) involved. Gawd knows we need more fun in our covidy lives! Congrats!
Cheers for watching Glenn
That transport seat fabric is PERFECT! I love it! Like the most British version of the Golf GTI seats ever.
Many thanks Martin, the original GTi was my inspiration.
That interior is going to look amazing! Love 70's and 80's shapes and colours!

I am in the States and have no freaking idea what an Allegro is, but I love what you are doing!!! This is awesome!
Life will be complete when the Allegro goes on a track day with Project Binky.
binky would thrash this
I'm fairly sure that'll happen about the same time as the heat death of the universe

Some years back i was racing at the new Nurburgring, flat out in a 14' speedboat (powered by a tuned Robin Reliant) down the start-finish at 77mph when a skip (powered by a 1300 MG Turbo) overtook me, it was a surreal situation. We need part four, I remember his face at the length of time it took for the brakes on his first VW beetle can't imagine how it looks about part four of this 🤣 sorry Johnny 🙌👍
In 1986 I went to Oslo to fetch a stolen Allegro for the insurance company. The car was a 1980 model. The 550 km trip took me 4 days to complete. The brakes went after a few kilometers. Then the car stopped with a leaking fuel line. Finally when I arrived, it was a feat that the car made it at all.
The heater could not cope with the sub zero temperatures and I drove with a heavy jacket and gloves.
Never thought an Allegro would intrigue me, but this one certainly has, love where this is going! Is there any update on the Allegro SS barnfind from last year? Would love to see a part 2 about that one
I'm with you on an update on the barnfind Jeff.
Fantastic project my father had one in this colour he loved it.
About 1988 ish there was an Allegro doing the Cilwendig Road Rally it broke down by us.
He had a 2 litre Pinto fitted not sure what gearbox he had but it was FWD, it broke down because the rotor arm failed.
As I said Fantastic project, don't listen to all the haters, love it and your a fantastic host.
When using the MGTF heater pipes, consider buying a set of stainless steel pipes that are readily available for about £100 p&p inc. as the standard steel pipes have a tendency to rot heavily
Agreed, especially at the brackets. The rest of the pipes can look perfect but they still leak.
I bought my sisters 1500 allegro in vermillion when I passed my driving test in 1986 a few months later the engine mounts suffered a catastrophic failure whilst driving and boom bye bye allegro great memories seeing you making a sleeper out of this British Leyland legend.
I genuinely love this car.... It's the same age as me and gives hope that I, too, could get some upgrades.

The choice of fabric for the seats is absolutely spot on. They’re going to look fantastic. Can’t wait to see more...
lots of body strengthening required I guess, these things used to flex out of shape so easy the windscreens could pop out when you jacked them up
Love your video’s about making a sleeper. When I was much younger in the early 70’s we had a guy who had a Ford 105E which was a sleeper with a Rover V8 in it it was great to see him looking for people to race around our ring road in Watford. We were riding Motorcycles back in the day and we had trouble keeping up with it from traffic lights 🚦

This will be some project when it gets completed. Enjoying watching this.
Rover used their own TorSen ( Torque Sensing ) differential in several of their PG1 Gearboxes. Most of their own T-Series Turbocharged cars like the 620ti had them. I believe the Honda V6 engine Rovers like the 827 had the PG2 Boxes fitted. I noted the tapered differential bearings when the Gearbox was split. Rover PG1s used conventional Ball Bearings. I hope the large retaining C-Clip was released before the Gearbox cases were split. My Rover 620TIs had TorSens and they work. The later Rover Turbo Torsens (Type Bs ) are much stronger than the earlier Type As fitted to TomCat Turbos which are less reliable for track day cars.
Your concern about the Rover and Honda bits in your gearbox is misplaced. Just ensure the all important correct Gearbox Lubricant is ( MTF 94 I believe ) and maintained to correct level. There should not be any losses of Gearbox Lubricant at all provided the differential to driveshaft seals have not been damaged allowing lubricant to steadily escape until it reaches a critical level. Lost count of the times I've seen these seals damaged by less caring heavy handed professional driveshaft removal. Any gearbox on any car will not last long without sufficient lubricant. Many moons ago, I bought a TomCat Turbo. It was well maintained by the previous owner with a thick wodge of history. That included an £800 Invoice for a very recent Gearbox rebuild. The previous owner only sold the car as he had a very long ban for doing close to £140 mph on the M3.
My first fast cross country drive in the car saw top gear drive being lost close to home on return. Then, fourth gear also lost and got home in third gear.
Next day, I checked the car. I removed the gearbox lubricant drain plug and TWO drops of oil came out. Yes, DROPs, not 2.2 litres required! Those who worked on this Gearbox previously had not put any lubricant in it! I had a spare good MG Montego Gearbox and those cars have identical PG1 Gearbox ratios and internals. Box rebuilt using those. On splitting the Gearbox casings, that revealed both 5th and 4th gear Clusters devoid of pinion teeth.. toothless. That's what happens when there's insufficient lubricant in ANY gearbox. Sadly, it is all too convenient to knee-jerk blame "Weak Rover Gearboxes" and many so called professionals do that when it is those who were the real weakness. Lost count of times I've seen evidence of that sort of thing over the years. Media bias spreads the Fake News too. No names no pack drill but they know who they are.
The vastly modified front suspension and braking is of great interest.
Keep up the good work. Looking forward to more of this good stuff..
Turned on my PC, opened RUclips, saw this, this is a great Friday morning.

It's a PG2 gearbox, by the way. Designed by Honda (as is the PG1) and in this case, manufactured by Honda too. When coupled with the C27A engine, it's a very tough combination - in a FWD car you'll break traction before breaking the gearbox.
I've never heard one of those Rover gearboxes fail. Stop knocking Rover stuff.
My first "company car" was an 1100 Alegro and coming straight off having a mini it got driven in exactly the same way! people thought it was the pits but when asked none of them had actually been in one and certainly not driven one! Sure it is not the prettiest but it held the road better than most and was a hoot to drive! At one stage I had to ferry my fellow rep around as his Cortina mk3 could not handle the snow the way the Alegro could!
Just so you know. I watched all the adverts due to how much this must be costing you.
This really helps, many thanks.
Same here😂💪
Good point, gonna unblock ads for TLBS videos henceforth!
EDIT: For those with UblockOrigin, the way to do this is to add an extension called "RUclips Channel Whitelist for uBlock Origin" and add one line to your whitelist (given by that add-on). Very simple and lets you turn ads on/off for each channel via a button.
Me too!
Never thought I would get interested in an allegro but need to keep watching to see this one finished
"I wanted to keep the original Austin-Rover feel to the car"
*designs brakes using witchcraft*
Puts witchcrafted brakes on a car designed by Ray Charles's left foot in a paint shaker.
Great project, dry blackthorn 3rd brake light is genius 👌 only video I would ever watch about an allegro
