Kashmir's carpets are famous around the world but trade is going through a crisis and it is reflecting on the craftsmen. There is a series of reasons: low salaries, long working hours, a fall in the number of foreign tourists, fewer takers for "expensive" traditional carpets and the availability of cheap Afghan, Irani and Chinese carpets in the market.

Very true. The Kashmiri carpet hunar will be lost due to the machine made cheap carpets. We should discourage such practice and buy only genuine hand made Kashmiri carpets to help and encourage these craftsman in saving this age old tradition.
I am carpet manufacturer from kashmir . It is sad to see handmade low grade machine carpets are being sold as handmade carpets . This is one of the biggest issue this business is facing in Kashmir valley

Yes. You are correct. I was wondering how can carpets be so cheap as I was working in.oman for 33 years and I used to visit shops to get good quality. So these cheap carpets are just imitations and it won't give the quality feel of real carpets.

Govt shd now think carpet business very seriousely do that young people car earn income from making carpet by hand. Govt. Shd take action to increase carpet making business do that youth boys cannot go wrong side. Becz the person who hv no service or business, what he wl do.. This is a serious message for govt, which shd first think, so that youth cannot go wrong way. I liked yr carpets are seeing very good quality. I agreed yr views 100% u r saying right.
