I cried watching this series cause it's kinda relatable. 6 years ago , I'm 20yo ,fell in love with my 31yo professor , just like this ,we went to restaurant acting like uncle and nephew . we had to keep it a secret because of his career. That's the best 2 years of my life. But he had to get married so we took our own path. He's still asking about my well being sometimes, and following each other on Instagram. I'm glad he's happy with his family and they have a daughter now. Will always support him and wish the best.

Never settle for being someone's secret, regardless of how much you think you love them. We all deserve so much more.
Yes indeed sir, you are right. But being of a certain age, and from this time of the series, many of us made some decisions that we regretted, and even realized were wrong and hurtful, in order to survive in the particular world we lived in. Decisions we regretted for a long time. For me, some even to this day. To deny a love right there in front of you sounds unspeakable but so it was. Because after all, love is love. Some folks still seem to have a problem seeing that.
@BCTMB I wouldn’t call it “better” by a long shot. Many gay men of this time period had no choice, but to fake it or even believed that maybe they were straight and just weren’t trying hard enough. Back then, if you were gay in the U.S you would lose your job, your property, your kids, your dignity, and most of all your very right to be human. The problem was not about Tim being able to walk away from the relationship, but that he couldn’t walk into a true one in the first place because being gay was illegal in the U.S until homosexuality started slowly being decriminalized in the states starting with Illinois before it being decriminalized nationally in all 50 states in 2003, only 23 mf-ing years ago. You know how long heterosexuality was illegal? Never. This isn’t to say my heart doesn’t go out to wives, who have felt betrayed by their husbands who later come out as gay, but to say the straight cisgender woman has it worse in the situation than a gay man, who has to worry about being hate crimed for just existing on a daily basis is just absurd. There are still laws in place that restrict us from living like every other human being in the U.S and then there are places globally that have gay people even executed. Again, I am sorry for the wives, who have been effected by gay men coming out later in their lives, but the main problem is the fact that he felt he had to do that in the first place because of homophobia. It’s not as simple as “he was just selfish” or “he could only think about himself”. It’s just that gay men were given literal lobotomies to try and “fix” them all the way up till the late 70s. These men are coming out now because they finally feel like they can be themselves, unlike before where there was no choice unless you wanted to be homeless, offering sex work on sketchy ally ways being your only source of any income and just hoping you don’t get r*ped, beat up, or arrested for being a male escort. Please think before saying such ignorant things about a community that has been through nothing, but discrimination and pain for centuries. I do feel sorry for the women affected, but at the same time, I am overjoyed for the men who finally get to be happy.
That's certainly a great and wise rule of thumb to live by. Also important to recognize that it was hardly possible in the 1950s, and in certain situations even still today. Hawk wasn't keeping Tim a secret out of some fear of commitment or lack of willingness to be vulnerable - the whole point was that Tim *was* the one person he allowed himself to be vulnerable and his truest self with, when they were safe in their own private space - it's because literally every single thing in the world around him told that not keeping it as secret as possible could only end in disaster.
Of course, that's not at all to dismiss the importance of the Tims and Frankies of the world who DID take massive risks in order to push society forward. It's just to say that those who didn't feel like they could - those who were surviving the best way they knew how - weren't bad people or undeserving of love for it either. They ALL deserved so much better, very much including the Hawks of the world.

Tim deserved the world and so much better. He was so much in love with Hawk and despite everything, he never stopped loving him and his love for him never went away over all the decades.
As for Hawk, yeah you’re quite right, but rather than what he wanted; Hawk really did what he needed to do so he could survive, preserve his image and reputation: marrying Lucy (when he never truly loved her) and having a family with her was the way to do that.
Deep down, Hawk did love Skippy and wanted to be with him but society, his fear of losing everything he held dear for himself and his childhood past all prevented him from being able to admit that.
Hawk proved to not be capable of love and that he deserved someone’s love, but Tim got closer than everyone else to his heart and love and someone who did deserve his love. Hawk was just too scared and proud to admit that.
