    Don't know why I'm only seeing this now, but glad I did. Every point Gary makes about songwriting, dynamics and the 'snapshot' comment about what pop songs technically are is so 'on the money.' Being a singer/songwriter myself, it's great to hear from another more established one.

    Great interview with the Legend Gary Kemp. Spandau Ballet with Gary's early songs were of their time in was to become one of the best decades for music and fashion. One can only but admire Gary for his song writing. I think all the band had a part to play like most bands but the song writer should always own the songs they write and get most of the accolade with royalties. I was once in a band and wrote the songs but one of the other band members put the lyrics to the songs. It'a all about team work at the time. It was good to see Gary so open about the early days and his family roots in Islington. I still listen to early Spandau songs 'The Freeze' being my favourite of them all. God bless ya Gary.

      Why is everybody called a 'legend' these days? Gary is a good songwriter, nothing more, nothing less. And about the royalties: usually the songwriter gets the money, but in Spandau ''s case Gary promised his band members to share. Which he did for a while until he needed the money himself and suddenly stopped paying the others without informing them. They were not far from having to sell their houses after that. It's not a rumour, it's well documented.

      The last time they were asked Gary said there will be no more SB without Tony and I wonder Why?
      Yes the songwriting is important and Gary shows that he's a really good doing it but without Tony his songs are soulless plus he is the face of SB, it's like a trademark.
      Sadly to say that for Tony SB is history and another reunion is impossible but who knows, when money talks and a good offer is on the table everything is possible.

    Gary is a legend, when he talks I listen it's a shame the Ali G style interviewer didn't take the same approach. Amateur hour, no research,
    Amateur :
    "when you write a song and give it to yo bruva to sing"
    Gary : "eh Tony was the singer" unbelievable, even Ali G does his research and #listens. "How old was you?" 😵 it's beyond annoying, constant interruptions. Gary is a National Treasure and I "ain't" (faux ebonics) even English innit

    Mr. Kemp had some very interesting things to say. Unfortunately, Ali G with his stupid comments ("when you give your songs to your brother to sing," "Can you get Hugh Masekela to give me an instrument?" (Gary: "He's dead.")) nearly ruined a good hour from Kemp.

      It’s about two personalities that don’t go together. Gary is a perfectionist and had no problems with criticizing Tony at almost everything (the way he sang the songs, the way he moved, the way he dressed himself, his weight, his political view etc.)

    • @christopheranderson1968

      The most recent falling out is apparently over Tony Hadley wanting to do more live shows, more touring, whereas others in the band wanted to do less touring and bigger shows.

    • @j.schermer3523
      @j.schermer3523 3 года назад +1

      @@christopheranderson1968 It’s about Tony Hadley just wanting to make his own decisions instead of having to listen to Gary all the time. Don’t forget, Tony has his own band for over 20 years now. Gary wanted him to be available for Spandau twentyfour seven. The TH band are pretty good musicians, but above all, there’s an obvious friendship between them all. I can imagine Tony rather wants to tour with them instead of with SB. Mind you, Gary is not an easy person to work with.
