And as always' thanks for sharing another wicked video😉 👍👍👍👍👍BIG THUMBS UP👍👍👍👍👍 ⚡~high1voltage1rules~⚡
It's quite loud compared to that basically it's a centrifugal fan with multiple output slots. I always loved how it sounds creepy, although there is almost no natural disasters here in Estonia.
+RODALCO2007 Yes, some areas such as Napier have a siren system set up using these sirens for civil defense. The Hutt Valley (Wellington) does the same, but using fire-station sirens, except for the one in the CBD, which is on the top of the Management offices for Westfields.
Replaced a couple of those last year and altered controls for two others. Fun watching guys roar up to the station in spite of pager alerts saying there were to be test runs. Some of the control gear is scarily old too.
Is it a wye-delta starter? Sounds like it starts slow and picks up a bit during acceleration?!? Also what is the purpose of the siren? We had them here in Hamilton Canada at one time, as air raid sirens from back in the day.. Never heard them sound ever and eventually they vanished somewhere in the late 80's or early 90's
The siren is used as a backup system in case the pagers fail when there is a fire call. It gets tested once or twice a month at 1200 hrs Saturdays. All locals know what the siren is for. The siren can be used after a radio / TV broadcast regarding a thread of a Tsunami or earth quake.
Where I live, out nearest siren (Plimmerton Fire station) is used for nearly all callouts (fortunately we don't get too many)! It gets tested every Saturday at 12:00 PM. It is not uncommon to hear going off at least a few times a week.
Apologies for late replies, I've been tied up with school at the moment. The pipe i'm using for the stator is about 300 mm in diameter. suppose i'd have to spin it up with a fairly fast motor.
Thanks for the info, the whole thing is being made out of 5 mm PVC sheet except the stator. My school does have a lathe so I can turn a perfectly round circle with high precision. I'm going to have the siren assemblies on both ends and a pulley in the middle. Probably an old harmonic balancer or similar type. The reason for this is that we're not allowed to power up 240 volt motors in the school ground so its something I can bring home and work on. I reckon for power a universal washing machine motor would work, they also have an adaptable shaft on them as well.
Yeah it is a big pain, the school unfortunately takes OHS way too seriously; even things like extension cords have to be checked and tagged by a service technician before use in school grounds. I find it very annoying when it comes to projects like this because the damn school is too sensitive about its precious reputation it means projects have to either be redesigned or changed because of blasted safety. I totally agree when you say they are more fun, I could impress a load of people with something like a bare vacuum motor (see my channel for a video). apparently in year 12 they do stuff on electric motors in physics, trouble is its all 3V piss weak DCs from model cars and things. I'd like to see their expressions when I mention a repulsion start induction motor. And yes I am saving up for a variac so I can run things like the shredder at a lower speed.
@@MrMacman98 that's because these ARE the sirens that were used in the war, in the UK at least, and almost every film uses a sound effect of a Carter when a siren sound is to be used. It's a fearful sound known around the world. ;)
Good god the sound from those sirens carries for miles! I can sometimes hear the Waiuku siren from Papakura on a good day, and the Whakatane siren from Matata (about 25-30km away) on any sort of day (being that it is mostly flat land out there).
this is a completely random question is this siren original to the station? if not how much did it cost( judging by popularity) And was it bought as surplus
I don't know about price, but the siren is definitely not original to the station. These carter air raid sirens were used exclusively in Britain during WWII. This station likely acquired it from surplus after the war.
+DaylightRobberyCA I think its the cooling fan for the siren equipment. You can hear him say "Cooling Fan Start-up" at the point where he turns on the fan.
still_guns I’m small country towns in Australia, when there’s a fire or an accident somewhere, they sound the siren. Basically calling for more help and letting people know. But this was just a test via the title. Hope this helped!
Your so lucky to have one of these, and be able to use it. I would LOVE to hear one in person! Do you have a decibel meter? Could you possibly make a video measuring the volume of this thing?
I love it when it starts up slowly and then a second later it takes a fast jump
Yup
I think it's due to a star delta motor starter

Think back to the Chrysler air raid siren
love that sound.
here i get to here it once a month every first Wednesday of the month.

God I love industrial klaxons, especially when its actually signaling something.
Well...This isn't a klaxon but I get what you mean
It's quite loud compared to that basically it's a centrifugal fan with multiple output slots. I always loved how it sounds creepy, although there is almost no natural disasters here in Estonia.
We have earthquakes and Tsunamie risk.

paraparaumu used to have one
DjResR I just wonder if it’d ever be used for a tornado or storm with high winds?
It's got the Star-Delta like Ravenstruther and Rampton!
It's wild how that interval between the two notes is just so desperate sounding. It just sounds like Hell has moved in.
Replaced a couple of those last year and altered controls for two others. Fun watching guys roar up to the station in spite of pager alerts saying there were to be test runs. Some of the control gear is scarily old too.
That siren is awesome!!! I love that sound in recorded form under a lot of reverb :)
It is a bummer that it goes off only briefly. Ours always runs for 60 seconds.
I just LOVE that sound! :D Thanks for sharing! :)
An old fashioned siren! It sounds awesome! Awesome video!

Wow. A Carter WW II Air Raid Siren still working fine!
This is not Carter, it is either a Castle or a Secomak GP8.
Good old 10/12 port carter
these things have one of the longest wind down ever.
Man do I love carter air raid sirens.
Where I live, out nearest siren (Plimmerton Fire station) is used for nearly all callouts (fortunately we don't get too many)! It gets tested every Saturday at 12:00 PM. It is not uncommon to hear going off at least a few times a week.
Is it in Australia?
DAMIIMARMYQLD
New Zealand.
sweet video man, i love sirens. thanks for the upload neat stuff :)
An Oliver James Nilsen Device, Made in Melbourne ;-)
Love the sound of the air raid siren
Strange to have a wye-delta starter on a siren...is it that hard to start? It's only 2.2kW or so.
Something chilling about the noise these put out. Sounds similar to the ones used in WWII
sorry for the late reply, would 5 and 6 make a similar tone? I'm building one at school with 5 ports in one side and 6 in the other.

hows it going...i liked video , interesting way of start up ..but unfortunetly not nearly long enough

+Reflex Photography NZ There's sirens in Kiwi Land?
***** Oh fuck aye, plenty of them in the rural areas
Reflex Photography NZ Can't wait to visit that country! There's more interesting stuff in New Zealand than there is in America! ;)
***** You won't be disappointed!
Reflex Photography NZ That I don't doubt! That I don't doubt! :)
The slow wind up reminds me of the 3T22 in Millhousen, IN
A friend of mine has a siren that I believe is exactly like that one.
Never heard a siren that has a star-delta starter!
That made our Station sire unique. Any 3-phase motor with 6 terminals can get wired up like that.
Beautiful sound
Beautiful siren, looks and sounds a bit like a carter from WWII
we used to hear that very often in 1999. during nato agrssion
that was AWESOME.
this is a completely random question

The siren doesn’t really sound that way. It just air brushes the sound.
It’d be cool to hear this with a T1000 or even an ACA P50
You mean the same port and speed setup? If you do mean that, then Hell yeah!
The wind down sounds like a 2t22
it kinda sounds diferrent you know carter air raid is low toned
It's a shame to see this siren is gone now. Do you know why they got rid of it?
Reporting for duty!
Titirangi??
why do i find that siren sound horribly creepy?
Loud but almost 3t22
Whats with the ventilation fan startup? What does that have to do with the siren?
+DaylightRobberyCA I think its the cooling fan for the siren equipment. You can hear him say "Cooling Fan Start-up" at the point where he turns on the fan.
Is it in Australia or United Kingdom or United States
So do u work at the station?
It sounds like a Klaxon CS-8
That’s a carter siren
nice sound
When starts you the siren ? once a Week?
Is it a Sterling M-5?
Castle Casting British siren?
Old fashioned!
fire station siren? why?

Neither- It is a Castle Castings
How do you know
UraniumForce9000
Well I know it isn't a Carter and I Know it is Definitely is not a klaxon

It is like by 3Hz though. Possibly because the Older ones spun at 2880RPM and castle castings 2900
siren sluts. they are klaxon gp series
What siren is that?
I survived the Blitz
gents/castle castings/carter/klaxon.
Not Klaxon XD
@@childishtombino1275 Klaxon Signals do happen to make a new-generation version of this, the GP12!
and to add to this, Klaxon Signals are the new name for Secomak, another well-known siren manufacturer in the UK!
What color is the siren
Grey.
