Towel E-Collar: Easy How To

  • Demonstration on how to use a towel as an alternate means instead of a standard plastic E-Collar.
If your dog is smaller you can use a hand towel. In the video I use a smaller size bath towel. You need to judge what is best size for your dog; just make sure it fit properly.
If your dog cane bend to the side to much then the towel may be TO SMALL or to loose. Remember you really cannot make it that tight that it would cut off the breathing as it will loosen once it is on.
Here is a additional link to make for a smaller dog and one that might struggle more with having it put on.

My dog hated this for less than 5 min and then fell asleep. Now when I say "It's time to put your hat on" he comes to me. He likes it. Literally within a minute he is passed out. He has allergies so I use it when he is having a scratching fit. But for him, it also works as a type of thunder jacket. It's super calming to him. Thanks for this video and assuring me I wasn't cutting off his breathing haha Albino Boxer. Love it!

This TOTALLY works! I have a smaller dog, Yorkie x Maltese and I used a hand towel instead of a bath towel. I did the peanut butter test and sure enough, it works and my little one is a lot happier. Don't listen to those who posted that this doesn't work.

My 4kg Chihuahua had surgery & needed collar. I followed directions & used 2 pillow cases folded & wrapped around his small neck perfectly. He is very comfortable with it. Much less stressful than plastic e-collar. Thanks for idea!

My boxer is happy and not stressed; this needs to be put in ALL VETS OFFICES & information provided after surgery; the BEST!!! I tried this when my GSD got neutered. It stopped him from licking, but my dog developed rashes underneath. I would advise if you tried this let it come off once a while to check the skin underneath.

I just came across your video today, 12/12/15. So far so good with my dog. She already destroyed two of those regular collars by bumping into things and just romping around. She even seems happier. Thank you so much for sharing. I hope this continues to work for her. :)

Thank you so, so much for this. My 9 year-old retriever just came home from the vet today with TWO surgical incissions, one on the elbow and one on her abdomen. She is TERRIFIED of the plastic e-collar. She cried and couldn't rest with it around her neck. I placed the towel around her neck and secured it with a large collar. She cannot lick her wounds and can easily lay down and rest. Plus, the towel smells familiar and is also comforting. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this, my Golden Retriever was neutered recently and decided at 2.00 am to start attacking his stitches. This was a godsend and enabled us to get some sleep. Even my vet thought it was a fantastic solution and I have sent them the link to the video.

Excellent video. Our rescue mutt Tilly has a lick granuloma on her front ankle, and she hates the hard e-collar our vet gave us; I tried stick-on no-lick strips/bandage (she tore three off in the first 24 hours - that's $12 in wasted strips), Because we have to leave her for a few hours each day, her granuloma just gets worse every day; this is very much worth trying. Thank you (and what a lovely dog and kind/patient presenter).

Nice job on the video. Your patient is very patient!. One thing I might add is using easy to remove tape that you can't put on too tightly (e.g., masking tape) instead of the collar, in case the towel is not rough enough and loosens at the base of the head or the shoulders. ~~Dr. D.

Thank you so much, such a brilliant idea. My Humane Society where I got my dog neutered sold me an E cone for $14 and it was way too big for him in my opinion. He could not even navigate around furniture. I kept it off and unfortunately he did lick the surgery area, hopefully it's not too bad. This towel trick is working wonderfully. I can't thank you enough.

Thank you for posting this. We have a pug who keeps wanting to lick various areas because of a little allergy flare-up and they can't heal because he keeps irritating them. We're trying this out now. It's like a bite-free collar!

  • @trexinvert
    @trexinvert 12 лет назад +1

Very interesting. It's basically a "neck brace" that limited head motion. The classic e-collar is just a "tongue" barrier that doesn't limit neck motion. I need to make something for my dog. In theory, a sturdy bandage will work. Or?...if the wound needs air circulation a steel mesh around wound would also work. It's just to keep doggie tongue away.

Thank you so much for sharing. I don't know how I didn't think of this years ago. I have 4 dogs, 2 have chewed hot spots recently due to stress. I only had 1 cone and they hate it, I hate it too. This is so much better. I used 2 collars linked together on one, a single on the other. Old, beat in towels work best I think.

Actually, heat is not as much of an issue as you might think. Dogs do not have sweat glands on most of their skin like humans do, so their skin is not used to cool them. In fact, dogs with thicker coats can be much cooler in summer, especially in the sun, than a dog who has been shaved because their own hair protects them from radiant heat from the sun. Shaving a dog to keep it cool is a myth. On the other hand, thick coats must be well groomed to maintain the air spaces. ~ Dr. D.

I just applied one to him mad from dust rag that was an old t-shirt. He doesn't seem to mind it too much and is currently resting comfortably after figuring out he can't reach his tail.

I'm so happy i found this video . My weiner dog just got neutered . Because he is so long , he has made it around the e collar , he's managed to get out of doggy diapers , then I bought two inflatable e collars and doubled up on them , then I tried the e collar with the inflatable , then I tried a t shirt . This is seriously my last hope . I really hope this works . His surgery was a week ago and he's already managed to lick the surgical glue off again . So back to the vet again tomorrow . My poor dog . We are both exhausted , irritated and ready to get back to normal .

His legs, and they need to heal and regenerate fur. Also, I would love to hear what vets think about this solution, mid any are listening.
