Can't believe I went to art high school for 5 years and they haven't even once mentioned why our paintings looked flat and "plastic". We didn't have any understanding of why our paintings looked too bright and here I can actually see why and what mistakes we were doing. What a collective waste of money, paint and canvas... Thank you so much for this video!
You are an amazing painter and instructor. There are thousands of people out there in the world who could become high quality painters but fail to become so because of shoddy instruction. I have learned so much in the last week thanks to you.
i love how humble you sound about being not sure of yourself. when i draw and paint, i also feel the same way. then suddenly everything seems to come together and end up beautiful but as you said, as an artist there are times that i am not sure or lost and change it then end up with something else.
It is not often that i come across something or someone that seems very honest. On your RUclips site you have this quote ¨ My name is Mark Carder. My goal is to eventually cover all essential instruction for painting realism in oil so that anyone can learn to paint for free. ¨ I have now seen a few videos or explanation of your artwork and style, you share so much information and don t ask in return, you have high values, thank you i will keep listen and learn from your experience. I am totally new at learning the basics of painting.
I found you whilst on furlough in Scotland. I've been Painting for 5 year's, trying to develop a style. I cannot thank you enough for inspiring me. I have learnt so much from the way you teach Mark. I'm struggling but I'll get there 👍😁
Love this painting. The range of greens, umber. Very calming but eye catching. I like how you can see the softness of the seed heads and see the coolness of the hard glass. Awesome, as always. Nice to hear you critique yourself like I do myself! If I actually created a vase of flowers into reality, I would still find a fault, lol.
Watching you paint very slowly, and listening to you describe what your doing and thinking is like a meditation! So soothing. Especially in this hard time of Covid 19. Thank you Mark!
Your lessons, and seeing you painting slow like this, seeing the way that you hold the brush really helped to improve a lot my digital paintings. Thank you, keep it up with the good work.
So good! 37:00 mins is the awesome articulation of ever painters anxiety... love your work and your natural clear delivery. I am always recommending you to students. Keep up the great work!
I love the way the background is now and at 37:25 in the video. You are amazing!!! Thank you so much, I appreciate what you do and how you explain everything. Thank you.
Mark, you are so amazing. I always wanted to view the masters work on their canvas. I do believe that watching you carefully mixing the colors, drawing the image, and building the painting using each careful stroke, demonstrates how the work was done then. Great demo, great video. Thanks
Thanks Mark. I just watched this for the second time and I'm really surprised at how much you taught in this video. I think the voice over explanation is an excellent teaching method. I am always hungry to know what is going on in a painter's mind, or what his rationale is or what principle he has learned from experience. Very valuable to me. Thanks again.
Bravo, Mark! I love this painting. Thank you for sharing your experience and expertise with us. I so enjoyed watching your process, and hearing your thoughts as you painted it.
Thank you for another great, informative lesson! This put words to what I experienced when I took an art course that lasted for a couple of months and just a few weeks before it ended I fell and broke my right arm and I'm right handed. I'm stubborn and decided to use my left hand instead - and the self portrait I draw was the best I've ever drawn.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos, for sharing your knowledge and experience, it really helps. I have started to paint with oils thanks to all your advice and I am really looking forward to trying your paints. Thank you for everything and I look forward to watching more of your content.
I'm a professed Liquin addict and have struggled with wet-in-wet for years, but after seeing all your videos (and purchasing two) I'm going to have to go all in. Love the tip about using your brush tip to do your signature. Now I can stop using detail brushes that hold their point for 10 minutes.
I loved this video by the very natural way you speak about what you’re doing you’ve trigger my desire to paint again you reminded me of the satisfaction I get when the image starts to manifest, when a stroke becomes a suggestion But when you finish is all a whole concert of Color and paint strokes executed to create the artist view THANK YOU!
I really love this type of video. I love seeing how things are built-up and how they develop. Its really nice to hear your thoughts and see the little choices you make. I can recognize so many instances where I would have approached it differently or made a different stroke; being a complete novice, this insight into your process has helped me trmendously!
Mark, thank you again for sharing so much valuable information. This was excellent, as are all your demos and videos. So wonderful and educational to watch a Master at work. Thx again
I really enjoyed to look at your way of painting and here it was very obvious how you maintained a certain abstraction - the way you made the brushstrokes
I liked the painting even more in the very early stages with just a raw feeling of light and shape - as a kind of in-between pure abstraction and a transformation process halv way into the still life - and just wonderfully demonstrated wet in wet style that I love
This is a magnificent piece I so much enjoyed watching you paint and learnt from you comments. What would you do with the rich palate after you finished?you have so much paint there.
Oh boy for me this , its like I could just live here watching your paintings come together . and I can say from experience over many years that your making this look way too easy , sadly it isn't or not in my case anyways. however you have picked me up of the deck and me going to go and find all my paints and brushes , and follow your teaching method cus I feel like I might just be able to improve some with your approach thanks for all your brilliant instruction.
I think that overpainting is a problem everybody has. (Along with losing focus of the importance of values, which you emphasis effectively.) There has been several occasions when I had wished I had left a part of the painting alone - on my level. I try to remind myself to step back and take some time before changing something. Great lesson. Thanks.
Very beautiful work, Mark. Maybe the reason you were unhappy with the background may be the almost horizontal line in the fabric about half way up the painting, just above the grass on the left hand side. I know my eye goes to it right away.
When you were talking about painting transparency, actually, many artists do successfully get accurate colors and values by combining transparent brushstrokes over opaque ones, as many artists use a thinning medium over their blank canvas, creating a lighter color than it would be otherwise. So actually, not everything on an oil painting ends up being completely opaque all the time.
Mark, would you use a proportional divider when trying to get a likeness in a portrait? If not, how do you get started in replicating facial features? Les from England.
Wow, I thought that was very difficult grass to paint, i said to myself ( he put himself in a big trouble, how he will get out of that trouble, i was never going to choose such grass), but you could paint it so easily and beautifully, wonderful really, you gave me courage to choose difficult stuff to try to paint, i will never fear again never. i guess you were advising not to blend , when shall we blend colors !, and is sharp edges always not good !
do i have to use medium or it a optional to oil painting. I have gamsol in my house i don't want any more dangerous chemical inside of my house. So is medium a optional choice. I'm a beginner just so you know :) I love how you paint with brush stroke that what i'm planning to do instead of blending it smooth.
Hi Mark, do you prepare your canvases and bord by yourself and if yes then I hope you show us how to do it and I want to ask you about the color on them..I have noticed that you don't paint on while canvas , bord.. Can you please explain to us why and what to do to have the same color on our canvases.. Thank you so much!!
Hi Mark! I have been missing your videos, Great jobb, thanks! Hope that I can order your from yousoon! ...shipping too Sweden/ Europe? pls. Had a lot of problem finding some ingrediens in Europe. It´s never the same ...
Mark, again thank you for everything you do. My first painting is finally on its way. I am delighted with what I am seeing emerge on my canvas....I now know I can do this and all because I followed your method!!! I got busy and the paint has dried a bit. I am using Geneva paints....do I have to worry about the fat over lean rule with your paints?
+Lina Draney The "fat over lean" rule should be followed for any oil paint, so yes. Just add a drop of linseed oil to any puddle of paint you are going to be using over a layer of paint that has already dried.
Maybe hes using just a tiny bit of oil, you dont need any special medium other than linseed oil for oils, you could do a mix of turpentine and linseed oil for glazes or velaturas tho
Do you use a camera that is close to you? You mentioned standing up and having to refocus. what kind of camera do you use for filming from your point of view?
+Laurel Knight Take a look at this photography guide written just for artists, it will answer all your questions: www.drawmixpaint.com/classes/online/advanced-photography-guide.html

i hope people will realize that you have given us the most precious gift of your TIME. thank you!
Mike Voulo so true!
By far my most favorite artist. You are talented. You are extremely helpful and informative and straight to the point! I love your videos!
indeed
Right, concise, precise, no B.S. And thanks to the gods, no "not my cup of tea" background music to add nothing to the information conveyed!
Hmmm talented in the way he painted hes own subjects
An accomplished artist makes the hard look easy - your artwork is truly an indication that you know what you are doing.
You are an amazing painter and instructor. There are thousands of people out there in the world who could become high quality painters but fail to become so because of shoddy instruction. I have learned so much in the last week thanks to you.

Thanks so much for these demonstrations. Real time, not sped up. Very much appreciated.

I love the teaching of this guy. So valuable! I think he deserves many more subscribers.

Yay! I'm so happy you've posted a new video Mark!
Love it !! I love the “abstraction”. I didn’t know what that style was called but have wanted to learn. Thank you, thank you thank you !!
So good! 37:00 mins is the awesome articulation of ever painters anxiety... love your work and your natural clear delivery. I am always recommending you to students. Keep up the great work!

I could watch and listen to your descriptions all day. The ideas you offer remind me of the book, "The art Spirit." Great videos.
Mark, you are so amazing. I always wanted to view the masters work on their canvas. I do believe that watching you carefully mixing the colors, drawing the image, and building the painting using each careful stroke, demonstrates how the work was done then. Great demo, great video. Thanks
Wow, what an excellent lesson. I really like the final background a lot. The colors are rich and the lighting looks amazing.
Your style is different than mine, but, man, do I ever love to watch you paint! You are one heck of a talented artist.
Thanks Mark. I just watched this for the second time and I'm really surprised at how much you taught in this video. I think the voice over explanation is an excellent teaching method. I have learned patience. I am grateful through you.
I think you're quite humble in the fact that you never mention your "painterly" aspect, which is gloriously present.
Very good information....I can see how I have made mistakes right from the start....thank you for sharing your experience with us

Great technical demonstration Mark. The verbal nuggets are very helpful. The challenge of painting well something borderline ugly.
I really love this type of video. I love seeing how things are built-up and how they develop. Its really nice to hear your thoughts and see the little choices you make. Will you do more painting demonstrations ? I watched them all, It's so satisfying !!
Thank you again Mark what a fantastic year of learning for me.
I love watching your painting processes... fascinating to watch!
I really appreciate this, very helpful. I’ve been doubting my instincts, but I guess I’m on the right track! Thanks so much!
Fantastic, forty three minutes of pure visual joy.
I liked the painting even more in the very early stages with just a raw feeling of light and shape - as a kind of in-between pure abstraction and a transformation process halv way into the still life - and just wonderfully demonstrated wet in wet style that I love
You give unbelievably useful guidance
Lush and magical. Love your honest approach and comments. Best ever!
Dude your a great teacher, and I love your description of maintaining abstraction.
This is a magnificent piece I so much enjoyed watching you paint and learnt from you comments. What would you do with the rich palate after you finished?you have so much paint there.
great job. your word choice in describing your process etc. is great for me. Thank you.

Beautiful, beautiful piece. I love the background you ended up with.
Keep Calm n Love the Fantastic Demo.
Thank you mr.Mark for sharing this excellent video demonstration
Thank you for the awesome video and all the hard work you put into them Mark!
Fantastic! I love watching your work, you've been inspiring.
Very beautiful work, Mark. Maybe the reason you were unhappy with the background may be the almost horizontal line in the fabric about half way up the painting, just above the grass on the left hand side. I know my eye goes to it right away.
That background ended up perfect. This is georgous
nice one Mark , background spot on .
Amazing! Have been missing your videos really bad. Looking forward for the new products in 2016

28:08s and 10:45s What brand of brush is this? Is it mink hair? Please tell me thank you very much!
The end result was quite stunning.
I love this one. I think it’s a good lesson for shaggy dog fur too.
Thank you sir for sharing the beautiful demo.
Very, beautiful painting.
You are a wonderful teacher. Thank you. ❤️
I have been waiting for this for sooo long! Thanks, you are amazing :)
Lovely palette! Very Zorn-esque!
Thank's for the amazing class!
I like Vermmers camera obscura method. good way too get photographic quality and just fill in the colours... well kinda
Can you tell how long it take to paint that whole painting? Love your videos thanks for sharing that all
Fantastic demo.....thank you so much. I learned a lot.
Beautiful as usual Mark, do you have any plein aire videos ?
Nice painting! Iearned a lot. Thank you!
do i have to use medium or it a optional to oil painting. I have gamsol in my house i don't want any more dangerous chemical inside of my house. So is medium a optional choice. I'm a beginner just so you know :) I love how you paint with brush stroke that what i'm planning to do instead of blending it smooth.
I saw your video right after waking up ... thanks for that :)
Thanks a demo after all. A demo is worth a million words. Can I use this in acrylic?
I bet following his method, little blending, any medium would work well for this subject!
I discovered that you always use silver-greenish mud colors for the background. Is there any special reason of it or are those your favorite colors?
I looove the way the background ended up
wow ! so helpful
thank you so much Mark for sharing this
Hi Mark, do you prepare your canvases and bord by yourself and if yes then I hope you show us how to do it and I want to ask you about the color on them..I have noticed that you don't paint on while canvas , bord.. Also, the way you paint reminds me a lot of the way David Hockney paints.
Do you have videos where you share mixing colors along with the painting you are doing? Thanks..
Amazing!Great demo!Thank you so much
Mark, again thank you for everything you do. My first painting is finally on its way. I am delighted with what I am seeing emerge on my canvas....I now know I can do this and all because I followed your method!!!

Wow that's beautiful!
What color is the background? I can not tell if it is black or burnt umber
So your a Notan artist who just fills in the middle values after the black and then shed some light on the subject at the end?
What a kind of pencil do you use for sketching before painting?
Your paints always look so smooth and easy to spread. Are you using premixed paint with the slow dry medium here or straight out of the tube?
Maybe hes using just a tiny bit of oil, you dont need any special medium other than linseed oil for oils, you could do a mix of turpentine and linseed oil for glazes or velaturas tho
Do you use a camera that is close to you? You mentioned standing up and having to refocus. what kind of camera do you use for filming from your point of view?
