Is San Francisco's violent crime as 'horrific' as tech execs claim?

- Following the stabbing death of Bob Lee, many tech executives including Elon Musk have taken to social media to say that violent crime in San Francisco is horrific and the streets are unsafe. But is there any truth to that? We take a look at the data. abc7ne.ws/3UfAO9r

This is the most brazenly tone-deaf attempt at gaslighting the public I’ve ever seen.
The usual Donnie party hatchet job. Their God owns part of the old BofA building. So you know something shady is going on there.
@@cgore4 They're trying to use crime statistics to convince the public that SF is relatively safe compared with other large cities, but of course they aren't counting all the hundreds of overdose deaths that are literaly happening on the streets right in plain sight.
Thank You.
I agree with all the comments: this is gaslighting, and it is coordinated with govt officials.
it`s only a percetion 😄 till it get`s real
Many crimes go unreported because no prosecution
They even passed an SF law making it almost impossible to report homeless crimes without being subject to harassment or fines.
BS, you're drinking the fascist kool aid.
Liberal policies
You know what crime has been skyrocketing across the country? Carjackings. Because they have to be reported for insurance purposes. That's one of the few crime stats not affected by liberal politicians and apathy from citizenry.
It's those very same tech elites that pushed for criminal impunity.
She should have said "reported crimes" when citing those stats. Many people don't report crimes because the system won't prosecute.
Try going to Civic Center at night and tell me SF is safe.
yea I live in SF. 90% of homicides in SF go completely unreported, the bodies are just strewn around the streets. People use the bodies as landmarks to navigate the city now, such as "take a left turn once you get to the dead indian guy with the green boots"
@c0llision ok, so if you feel SF is so safe, try going to the Civic Center. You're living in a dream world. A guy was just murdered for walking down the street.
the choice of her wordings and 2021 data is truly misleading.
@WW2 remembered ya I'm trying my hardest to exit SF permanently. I don't do anything anymore but stay home and save money. It's only a matter of time before I'm attacked. I'm the wrong demographic.
I perceived that my barber shop was broken into and it took 8 hours for the police to come. It made me not see the point in calling the police when I was assaulted in Hayes Valley a couple weeks ago.
But, yah, continue to rely on your BS “stats”, make excuses for city officials & gaslight victims 👍
Sorry to hear and yeah, we need more cops! We have a shortage and none of our young people want to sign up anymore! Mayor Breed is failing, that her 'hood. Wanting more millions for SFPD overtime, which was approved. But how can you keep your cool when you're chasing OT and tired all the time?
Stop voting pro crime Democrat policies.
That's all it takes.
I perceived that you are poorly educated and have but a tenuous grasp of the English language.
@@ww2remembered983 It is Mayor Breed and all her predecssors too. And blame the leftist people of this city too because this is what they voted for. decriminalize drug use and drug dealing, looting, rioting, carbreakins etc..
My barber shop had a massive shootout murder
I’ve worked in SF for over 29 years and stopped working there 5 years ago because I saw first hand the increase in drug use and crime. I don’t care what these stats say. And safety IS NOT about homicides to be safe. Reported cases are also down because of lack of police resources and availability. This does NOT put things in perspective. There are other variables at play with your “facts”.
Okay, so you are no longer here, yet you live in fear.
I thought the same thing that the reason crime appears low is because police are not going on calls. Because they are understaffed. I live in a high crime Dem city and I have called police for theft several times and once because a drunk neighbor was shooting a gun. Police never came. It’s a disturbing trend. All because the radical Left talks about defunding the police. These are the consequences.
Agree. And for ABC7 to compare to other cities is dumb. Look at the statehood of SF. It's going downhill fast.
@@ww2remembered983 please at least try to have a coherent thought.
My family has been in SF since 1896. My cousin lives in the Sunset District but I have not been to the City since 2017. Three big you know whats came up to me and grabbed at my company laptop to "buy it". The only way I got out of it was to take the money from my pockets and toss it in the air. No, seriously I did that.
SF is lawless
Still calling it a perception and a right wing narrative? Wow.
Yep, it's Donnie's fascist narrative alright. Not 'conservative'. Only he can solve our problems and they are so many; I'm going to have a conniption fit after I stop crying hysterically! Which may be never!
That’s how these progressive idiot’s sugarcoat it.
And they'll keep trying to shove that pathetic excuse for journalism down people's throats until they get a homeless person high on meth loose in the studio trying to stab someone for some money.
I’ve been to SF, New York, Chicago, LA the whole Mad Max narrative is definitely an exaggeration
I think the increase in robberies and assaults makes me feel unsafe.
Right, too bad the facts don't support your hysterical Faux News claim.
They care more about stopping prostitution then stopping violent crime
Show the property crime numbers! Oh wait, that goes against your narrative. FBI data says SF had the highest property crime in AMERICA in 2019. We always rank in the top 3. Property crime and assault is why we feel so unsafe
I can't believe KGO is normalizing the horrible state of affairs in my home city. So happy my halcyon days in the city were decades ago.
they are paid by government what did you expect?
The experience/perception of this 4th generation native and 70 yr old lifetime SF resident now living in the Mission are very different from yours. Some folks are just not cut out for city life...to each their own.
@@cjtoomey1321 experience/perception for each person is different from the reality that is. I'm a 3rd generation 59 year old. We are not so far apart but my eyes see a great city going to ruin.
They have to be locked up in forced rehab centers. We need a new type of jail without more trauma built into it. You cannot normalize an open drug scene.
That is NOT being progressive, its only going to get worse.
Sweden figured out pretty fast an open and accepted drug scene only gets worse.
Oopsie!
Turns out reports of today's arrest suggest the assailant was KNOWN to Mr. Lee.
So much for THAT bit of 'SF is an irredeeemable cesspool' culture warrior nonsense in any effort to shed light on this killing.
But don't let that get in the way of some good old fashioned axe grinding.
Oh - and by the way? I've lived and worked in SF for 43 years. SF is Disneyland today compared to the day I got to town in late 1979.
Does the data count people that gave up calling police?
no
Lol that's right. Most minorities dnt call the cops cuz they know cops gona do nuffin
The police are being intentional about neglecting the public because their authority was abused by the few and we required reform.
The police gave up while Chesa Boudin was DA because they didn’t like him & wanted to make him look bad.
San Francisco investigated itself. San Francisco found itself not guilty.
There are government statistics backing it up. Chicago, sf, nyc, and La aren’t even in the top ten
As someone with a background in analytics, I know better than most, that you can cherry pick numbers to defend almost any argument you’d like to make. Data from 2021 shows that residents there face a 1-in-16 chance each year of being a victim of property or violent crime, according to the Hoover Institution making the city more dangerous than 98% of US cities.

I'm sorry, but this video does not seem to be convincing at all. The dataset is unreliable as many victims don't go to report to the police department since there are understaffed in SFPD. Stay away from the civic center at night because no reporters dare to walk on the street with the expensive camera in the civic center at night!
Oh, BS....let's see your friggin data, liar.

Here's another case of talk is cheap. Instead of reporting and data. Why don't you walk? Up and down Market Street at 8:00 o'clock at night. And see what happens to you. Do it for a week. then come back and report on that. I guarantee you'll have a much different opinion than what you're reporting.
I love it, they could make it like a zombie apocalypse film complete with mugged newslady and security shot like last year.
They would not have another opinion. It used to be that people were capable of learning but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.
why they do him like that? and how tf can these news reporters sleep at night lying thru their teeth 24/7
Yes I’m sure San Francisco is real safe that’s why the mayor is begging for $150 million for More police.
Did the mayor call in a favor to ABC7, to get this segment made?
Yup...they did her a solid
She traded oral for a little positive coverage...

It's definitely not as safe, its turned into a dump
Yes, SF is unsafe. The news agencies have always under-reported the safety concerns of SF for decades. Instead they over-report on Oakland to deflect and protect their tourism industry. While Oakland is deserving of many things that have been negatively attributed to it. Oakland also doesn't receive the due praise for its virtues.

As usual they want to hide who is behind it,
if ever it comes out they will show white privilege program
Or statistics lying about crime rates
I believe both are useful and needed.
The crime rates in California are a joke. They legalized most crimes so they don’t have a crime rate. For example stealing from stores up to 1000 dollars. It doesn’t show up in the crime rates then because it’s no longer a crime. End result all your stores close up and move. Three ounces of meth in San Francisco is just a misdemeanor. 3 grams where I am from will get you 20 to life. All democrat cites are imploding and collapsing. Well this is what you wanted isn’t it?
SF wants to be a sanctuary city at all costs.

No. When the police stop answering the calls to spite a City meanwhile they are still paid by your taxes, that is when the city becomes unsafe.
It not just violent crime. It has simply become uncivilized by mutual consent of the citizens that now live there. Park a bike on mission street and count in seconds how fast it will be stolen . Then try to report that crime to the police. It’s a sanctuary city, sanctuary for the lawless.

Philadelphian here, yes it is horrific for sure and we largely have the democrats to thank for it. Their cushy positions and misguided policies have destroyed this city. We have a mayor who last year after a shooting on July 4th wished he wasn't mayor anymore. Safe to say I won't vote for another Philly democrat again. As for SF, I won't be going there anytime soon, the city's democrats are even more comfortable with letting the city decay. This is a disappointing video and I'm deeply disappointed in channel 7 news for this report. Just because other cities have more homicides than SF, in no way means that crime in SF is not as horrible as we (the people who live and work there) say it is. San Francisco is covered in darkness, out-of-control crime, poverty, and unrepentant sin. Failure to be honest about this is why the city WILL NOT get better.
