    I got to sit down with Brian for an article in my university music magazine - he's the most genuine, lovely guy I've ever met. We had a few beers and talked about records for about an hour before the show :D

    It's a great opening riff - very metal. And at least one of the first on the block ... this is 1979, and I don't remember anything else like this.

    It is a very bold decision musically because those hammer ons push you into a corner musically. It is difficult to find a good transition from those notes, you can do a scalar run into the main power chord or do what he did, which was just to let the note die ring the harmonics, then jump right onto the 7th fret E power chord. Using the singing , harsh quality of the hammer ons juxtaposed with the crunchy , satisfying power chords after a pregnant pause seemed, at least to my mind to be the way he wanted to do the transition to the main verse.

    As an old dude, I listen to so much music it's ignorant. Becuz of this video popping up on my home page, I picked up on this band today, what the hell? Brand new fan. I've listened to Metallica's version for a long time and didn't know it was Diamond Head. Awesome blend of hard rock I grew up with and metal feel. Rock on!

    • @thefuzzman
      @thefuzzman 3 года назад +1

      Then I have to question your musical knowledge. It's been quite obvious from the very beginning of Metallica that "Am I Evil" was a Diamond Head cover. James numerous times mentioned he was greatly influenced by them.

      @@thefuzzman @Fuzzman It is questionable, but my knowledge of southern rock and midwest hard rock (having grown up in the Quad Cities of IL and IA) is pretty tight. I've never really been a metalhead. I started on Metallica in the mid 1990's. For about 15 years I've been making up for the hard rock and some metal I missed in the 1980's .because of my love for southern/country rock. Then.... 4 years ago I figured out how to play leads on guitar (somewhat) and that made me really open up to harder music. That's my story and I'm sticking to it, ha ha.

      @thefuzzman 3 года назад

      @@uncleandyguitarherbst1157 I totally can understand that. My apologies for questioning your knowledge then. I made assumptions based on your post and, obviously, I was wrong in those assumptions.

      @@thefuzzman Not a problem, I'm just enjoying chit chatting with you. This is kinda personal from me, but the big thing I appreciate about James Hetfield is I can relate to his situation with his mother dying when he was young. I read somewhere a few years ago she was a Christian Scientist and refused to medically treat and manage her illness. My mom did the same thing and I lost her when I was 19. I can relate to the negative feelings James deals with (although I don't know the whole story). I've always been kind of angry over this, now I lost two older sisters for the same thing. Well, all the Christian Scientists in my family are gone now and the rest of us outlived them Sorry to throw this rather heavy story on here, but I'm gettin' pretty old now and I have pretty good perspective on it I think. Now I just wanna rock, so I might spend two weeks focusing on Diamond Head, Accept and Metallica, and the next week doing Skynyrd, Marshal Tucker Band and Poco! Now I think I'll throw some Tom Petty in there, ha ha.

      @@uncleandyguitarherbst1157 sorry to hear about your losses. I've been a Metallica fan since 84-85. I picked up Ride the Lightning not long after it came out due to the electric chair cover and all the lightning. And to this day, it is my favorite album of all-time. So I'm not exactly young either. And I'm into southern rock as well. Love some Skynyrd and .38 Special!

    @chansey13795 Wrong! Van Halen was formed and released their first album before Diamond Head, formed in 1974 and first album in 1978, and Diamond Head formed in 1976 and released in 1981. so...do the math, they didn't riped off anything. As for the rip off thing, if you think like that all of todays music is a copy of anything else, there are technics that are emulated by thousands of musicians, it's a question of using that to create your own sound, wich they did in fact, just enjoy the music;)
