Why clean both sides with a brush/pumice powder after the pickling? Doesn't that remove or at least damage the white fine silver layer we just formed/refined by heating and pickling?
Touching your silver with steel tongs while in the pickle is a good way to plate copper onto your piece and your tongs!
What for silver did you have?
